What an absolute amazing road trip. If your visiting La Palma this has to be no 1 place to visit. Check the weather out before you go via the La Palma web cams. We went up today and the LP 4 route from Sant Cruz is breathtaking. The route is typical La Palma following the contours of the mountain. The route starts via lush green vegetation then it opens out to pine forest then high mountain ranges. Take your time traveling not to avoid the fantastic view points. You then turn off the LP4 up to the top. Limited parking for around 18 cars but parking can be had near by. Then you walk out to see the unbelievable breath taking views - stunning. Walk forward step by step to see one off the best views in the world (honestly I have travelled across the globe). Admire nature at its best. There is a clue in why the biggest observatories are here!!!! This place is awe inspiring and inspirational. Please take time out here and replenish your soul. See more..
  3. 5.0 Caldera de Taburiente (1.148 reviews)

    Caldera de Taburiente image
We pre-booked our parking space at La Cumbrecita (which you need to do if you are visiting in your hire car) and drove up from Los Cancajos. The views from up here are amazing, We did the Lomo de los Chozas circular walk (about one hour - including photo stops) which is a must if you are up here. If you are driving up I would recommend to do this you need to book a two hour slot which will give you plenty of time. See more..

We walked for a day from Hermigua more or less following the El Cedro stream passing the waterfall, making a roundabout south of El Cedro area and back to Hermigua. Several hiking alternatives but rather steep and only for the sure footed. Also easy walks are possible in this fascinating forest. See more..

We did 4 treks overall in La Palma and they all covered different terrain but this was the best! You can easily get a taxi to El Pilar from los Llanos or Santa cruz (we picked one up from the taxi rank behind plaza de la Almeda, the ship museum, €30 ~1hr, and you can park all day for free between calle carias and the start of LP101 near Almeda, just park in a white bay not a blue one). We walked to Fuentecaliente and took a bus back to Santa cruz (~1hr, they leave every 2hrs, €2.50 ish) but theres stuff to do in Fuentecaliente if you are early, like the bodegas/artisanal shop). It took us 5hrs, starting in the windswept and wet/windy moon scape at the top near El pilar, down through the forested area and on to the sunny green slopes above fuentecaliente. The views are amazing throughout. We went a few days before the transvulcania run but still only met 4 ppl going either way all day. Really easy to follow the signs. On the main street in Fuentecaliente there is a good tourist office if you want to confirm when the bus is etc. Take water / food, there are no villages or shops on the way. See more..

  11. 5.0 Parque Natural de Cumbre Vieja (51 reviews)
    - Sublimely breathtaking volcanic landscape

Parque Natural de Cumbre Vieja image
This is an amazing place that left me in awe. The scenery is indescribably beautiful and human beings are few and far between. The trails teeter on the edge of precipices with stunning views that make you appreciate why people started visiting 'sublime ' landscapes in the first place. A word of warning, however - you need to be fairly fit and well shod, as the paths can be treacherous at times due to masses of stones and dust that move under your feet when you least expect it - and I was wearing good hiking boots! Unless you're an expert mountain walker, add at least 30% to the estimated walking times provided in the otherwise excellent info provided at the visitors' centre. Take plenty of water and remember - the sublime cannot be tamed... See more..

If I got my geography right then this was the endpoint of our Caldera rim trail walk starting out at the highest point near the astronomical observatories. The whole trail along the rim follows one of the GR trails then heading down through the beautiful pine forests it's another minor trail. All are clearly signposted at fairly frequent intervals and have way-markers along the route too. The highpoint is rocky and barren as is the Caldera rim trail and then a complete contrast is the beautiful pine forests as you descend to the road and parking area. I'm sure we missed loads on just our single visit to the rim trail but were lucky with only some clouds coming and going as we walked. Trails are varied, plenty of up's and down's but not so steep as other bits we walked on the island. These areas are definitely a must see if you're in La Palma. See more..

Stopped here for some respite from the curvy road for 15 mins and enjoyed a great view over to La Palma. There is also a statue here commemorating the whistling language of La Gomera and also the church of St Francis of Asissi, which was inaccessible on our visit. Made some nice photos though and worth a stop. See more..

See more..
