  4. 4.0 Edificio del Banco Santander (310 reviews)
    - Historic icon of Santander's commercial greatness
    Points of Interest & Landmarks
    Edificio del Banco Santander image
An extraordinary and distinctive fin-de-siecle building - actually two, joined by a huge arch - that was the original head office of what has gone on to become one of the most important banks in the world. Immense, and easily recognised from its arch, it may be best viewed from the Pereda Gardens (Jardines de Pereda) behind the sea-front near the raqueros monument. See more..
  5. 4.5 Bárcena Mayor Historic Village (309 reviews)
    - Amazing find!!

    Bárcena Mayor Historic Village image
We loved visiting Barcena Mayor. We were staying two night at Santillana del Mar and were looking for a day trip. So glad we found this place. It is a gem!! We used our iphone map app to get us there and back without any problem. You cannot drive into town. You need to park right before and walk there, but the walk is not very far. It was worth going there and will definitely return when we can again. See more..

    - Often overlooked - As world class and must see as the closer caves.
Spent 1-2 hours Points of Interest & Landmarks
    Cueva Las Monedas image
To get to these caves from the main entrance is a 15 minute walk that is flat. This experience is very different from the other caves. This is part of the overall experience of the caves and is also a MUST SEE!! See my review on the other caves as well. As a world traveler, this really is a MUST see when visiting Northern Spain. Truly a once in a lifetime experience. See more..

    - Nice secluded beach.
    Points of Interest & Landmarks
    Ermita de Santa Justa image
We came here from Santillana del mar as it was a very short drive and fell in love with this small secluded beach and the Ermita de Santa Justa. The waves come in hard against the rocks but are calm once they reach the sandy beach. The ermita is a very short walk up a hill on the opposite side of the beach. Very relaxing and very enjoyable. 9. 4.0 Funicular del Río de la Pila (242 reviews)
    - Incredible Views From The Top
    Points of Interest & Landmarks
Funicular del Río de la Pila image
A funicular train that takes passengers up to Prado San Roque. The whole area is residential building, the hill is steep and I imagine many locals are thankful for the ride. There's also a nice viewing point overlooking Santander at the last stop. Not amazing fun, but fun and the views from the top are incredible. See more..

  11. 4.5 Puente Romano Medieval (205 reviews)
    - Roman structure
    Points of Interest & Landmarks
    Puente Romano Medieval image
The bridge was originally built to provide access to the chapel of Santa Ana which is now isolated on it’s own. The bridge can be seen from the harbour area and makes for a good backdrop to the lighthouse and church to left with chapel to right. On closer inspection you can clearly see the bridge has been renovated and repaired over the years but the basic structure is as it was originally. At the base is a large pool where the sea must enter via an underground gap - it was a reasonable calm day when I visited and no doubt it’s quite spectacular with high seas running. You can either continue along to the castle/lighthouse and church or back down and along the breakwater, which makes for a nice stroll with good views. See more..
  12. 4.0 Plaza Porticada (201 reviews)
    - Square Surrounded by Beautiful Buildings
Spent < 1 hour Points of Interest & Landmarks
    Plaza Porticada image
A lovely square, almost like a quadrangle but for the opening on the side facing the sea. It’s not really a traditional Spanish plaza with shops and cafes etc, mostly civic buildings, banking offices and a few high end looking shops. At the moment, the square and city is gearing up for Christmas, so much of the square is covered for celebrations. See more..
  13. 4.0 La Maza Bridge (177 reviews)
    - Interesting bridge
Points of Interest & Landmarks • Bridges
    La Maza Bridge image
This well made bridge with what some say, has 28 arches, others quote 32, is certainly a long bridge - for it's time. It is built in the 16th century in this traditional Spanish fishing village. We can't build bridges that sturdy and long lasting now...- Quality mattered.... There are 6 local beaches in the area, we visited the one called Meran, the beaches here are gorgeous, great sand, soft, clean, great to walk on and the air was so clean. Loved this area. Enjoy the beach, bridge, and stop in at a local restaurant. From there we traveled to Santillana del Mar where we stayed the night. See more..

  15. 4.5 Refugio Antiaéreo (160 reviews)
    - Interesting bomb shelter frommt he Spanish Civil War
    Wednesday: 11:00 AM - 2:00 PM, 5:00 PM - 8:00 PM Spent < 1 hour Historic Sites • Points of Interest & Landmarks
    Refugio Antiaéreo image
This air raid shelter is one of the 114 built in Santander during the Spanish Civil War. It was "buried" during the Santander fire of 1941, then re-discovered during the last decade. It is located in Plaza del Principe and entrance costs $2 per person, but you can get 3 sites visits for $4 (the air raid shelter, the old Santander wall, located nearby, and the cathedral tower). The tours are by appointment. The tour guide explanations were only in Spanish. There is a re-enactment of an air raid, with sound effects trying to replicate what people inside the shelter felt while the bombs dropped. Inside the shelter there is also a 240 kilogram bomb displayed, as well as a mannequin dressed as a German air pilot and a cenotaph in memory of two dead German airmen from the Condor Legion. A highly recommended visit. See more..

    Poblado Cántabro de Argüeso image
We went expecting an attraction more suitable for children but where given a very informative tour which was made so much more interesting by being able to see and touch the village and it's objects. 19. 4.0 Fuente de los Tres Canos (94 reviews)
    - Decorated Fountain
    Points of Interest & Landmarks
Fuente de los Tres Canos image
The Fuente de los Tres Caños is a fountain designed by the distinguished Catalan architect Lluís Domènech i Montaner and located opposite the Comillas Town Hall. Imaginatively called the fountain of three pipes, probably as you might guess the three pipe outlets. The fountain is richly decorated with sculptural elements, most notably, the mini spires with crown capitals surmounted by angels. A nice landmark on Comillas. See more..
  20. 4.5 Fuerte del Rastrillar (91 reviews)
    - Fabulous coastal views
Spent < 1 hour Points of Interest & Landmarks
    Fuerte del Rastrillar image
This is an old coastal defense fortification on a high headland next to Laredo. It is a substantial uphill hike to get there from the old town, you must go to the end as there are wonderful views of the coastline to the east. The views in other directions are wonderful too. Unfortunately this is a one way system, you will have to retrace your steps to get back to town. You can access this place via a walkway to the west of the old church or one to the east--the western path is the more attractive. See more..

  22. 4.5 Avenida de la Constitución (79 reviews)
    - Pleasant promenade

    Avenida de la Constitución image
Av. De la Constitucion is the main harbour area promendade and you can stroll along to Parque Cotolino at the far end past Playa de Bazomar or in the other direction through the old town area to Playa Ostende. There are some interesting buildings to look at, including the Town Hall and the tourist office is also along this stretch. You get a nice view across the harbour towards the church, castle and causeway on the town side. Flower beds are well tended and blooming even when I visited early March. There’s an underground car park beneath the park running alongside the prom plus numerous bars and cafes. Castro Urdiales as a town is nothing special but the harbour area and prom is well worth a visit. See more..

    - Gaudi Designed Gate

    Portalaa Casa Moro image
In a town already blessed with the El Capricho de Gaudi, this gate is a nice stop for those who can't get enough of the great architect. This cursive gate has all the hallmarks of a Gaudi design and is similar to elements of Colònia Güell, Sagrada Familia and Park Güell. The gate has three entrances, one for the cars, one for pedestrians and a hole said to be for birds. The latter giving this gate it's nickname of Portalaa Moro. See more..

  29. 4.0 Ermita Santa Ana (51 reviews)
    - Perfect view over the city
Spent < 1 hour Points of Interest & Landmarks
    Ermita Santa Ana image
I love that little structure on the rock! It used to be a chapel, but now all we can see inside, is the foundation of this edifice. They found out that there had been 12 construction phases, starting with the Romans. It must have been quite popular in its time, as it is still nowadays. We were able to go out and take pictures of the breaker and the marina. We had a great view over the city! The lady inside was quite excited when she found out we were Canadians. That was cool! We walked on the breaker, where this edifice is located. The waves were quite wild and they splashed on the rocks for a spectacular view. By the way, the breaker is a great place to take pictures of the Ermita Santa Ana, as well as other tourist attractions. We can walk on the high wall, or the low wall. Quite neat! I preferred the high wall, as I could see the waves playing around the rocks! However, the Ermita Santa Ana is a must to see. Quite enjoyable! See more..
  30. 4.5 Cascadas de Lamiña (49 reviews)
    - Lovely walk and waterfalls
Spent 2-3 hours Points of Interest & Landmarks
    Cascadas de Lamiña image
This is a good walk from Lamina which took us about 1 hour to get to the falls and the same back via the same track. Having struggled to understand some of the Spanish reviews and instructions, for you other English visitors who are as uneducated as us in the language here are some hints! From the town of Lamina you can either leave your car here or drive on the extremely bumpy muddy track up to the falls entrance. Not for us. There are only a couple of spaces to park your car so on a busy day in Summer not recommended. We walked from the town following the green/white marks on posts etc which took us up to the falls. Careful not to leave the track too early where the marks are on a gate post after going over a concrete bridge. Keep on up the hill on the track. It is a fairly easy walk but once you get to the forest and falls the path becomes slippy and unstable at times but easily passable with care. The falls are very pretty and well worth the visit however you get up there! Enjoy! See more..

By car you’ll see signs to the cemetery on N-634 leading out of Castro Urdiales in Santander direction. There’s a small chapel just inside the gates and an information panel in both Spanish and English on the exterior to right of entrance. This is a replacement Cemetery, planned in 1885 and built with public contributions. It’s laid out in parallel lanes (makes it easy to navigate round) with numerous family burial plots and a number of ornate tombs/crypts. The grounds are also a resting place for cats (see my pic!). I would say it’s not really worth the effort of a visit unless you have an interest in burial architecture. There’s a large skateboard park on the approach and being an isolated spot I’m not sure I’d like to leave my car unattended for too long (I walked up from town). See more..
