  1. 3.5 Catedral de Santander (602 reviews)
    - The Cathedral that Providence didn`t keep. For 1 Euro.

    Catedral de Santander image
Divine Providence did not preserve this Cathedral of the XII-XIV centuries. After surviving the middle ages, the Cathedral was severely damaged by the explosion of the steamship Cabo Machichaco on the roadstead. in 1893. There was enough dynamite to reach the Cathedral. Oddly enough, the Cathedral survived the civil war of 1936-1939, although Santander was stubbornly defended by the Republicans. However, 2 years later, Santander burned down in a fire in 1941. The restored Cathedral has an unusual structure. It consists of two churches and a cloister monastery. The lower Church, also called the Crypt earlier -XII century. The upper one was built in the 13th century in the Gothic style, as was the lower Church of Christ. A fire in 1941 destroyed most of the decor, except for the walls and columns. I liked the cloister best. It is very cozy. You can't visit the Cathedral for free. Only for 1 Euro. See more..
  2. 4.5 Ermita de la Virgen del Mar (215 reviews)
    - Impressive!

Ermita de la Virgen del Mar image
The hermitage, which only opens for mass and for the annual celebrations, is a very simple building that was constructed in the 17th century to house the statue of Nuestra Señora del Mar (Our Lady of the Sea), Santander's much-loved patron saint. See more..
  3. 4.5 Iglesia de Santa Maria de Lebena (179 reviews)
    - 9th Century pre-Romanesque
    Religious Sites
Iglesia de Santa Maria de Lebena image
Wow. It claims to be the oldest pre-Romanesque monument in Cantabria. It's an amazing old church with moorish style arches, which is curious, because the Moors never reached this far themselves. The tour is only in Spanish, but they have placards to hand out in English. It's a very small, country attraction and you have to wait outside for the next tour to begin, but a great little find if you're in the Picos de Europa. See more..
  4. 4.0 Santuario del Cristo de la Agonia (25 reviews)
    - Amazing interior

Santuario del Cristo de la Agonia image
This church is quite amazing. In what is basically a village, you find an eye-opening church like this. Originally a monastery, it was converted into a church around about the year 1500, and has been added to, and above all decorated, ever since. This is particularly true of the main façade, which began life as an austere structure with classical lines, but is now pretty un-austere with its carvings. The biggest decorative effort, however, was centred on the interior, where they really let themselves go, especially in the eighteenth century, with carvings and gildings galore. You'll be dazzled by the amount of gold leaf, or is it really merely gold paint?, on display all around. See more..
  5. 5.0 Our Lady of Garabandal Sanctuary (17 reviews)
    - Peaceful and beautiful place!

Our Lady of Garabandal Sanctuary image
My husband and I visited Garabandal in a cold a wet week in January. The village is like stepping back in time. We visited on the feast of Saint Sebastian (by coincidence) and following mass we were asked to join the people from the village for food a drink in the village hall. Everyone was so warm and welcoming, even though many didn’t speak English and our Spanish is not great. Walking up to The Pines, we found it to be one of the most serene places we’d ever visited. Also, Michael in the Pilgrims’ centre took the time to discuss with us the history of the apparitions of Our Lady, and showed us an interesting video to illustrate this. For religious and non religious alike, we would fully recommend a visit to this beautiful village. See more..
  6. 4.5 Abadia de Santa Maria de Viaceli (17 reviews)
    - Religious service

Abadia de Santa Maria de Viaceli image
We had read that you could watch the monks sing any evening at 9pm. Worth noting that unlike their cheese & produce shop round the corner, this is an actual religious service, not a tourist attraction. The service was simple, attended by about 25 locals. About 12 monks sang. There was some call and response, and a printed song leaflet with scored music. The congregation sang one song. See more..

  8. 4.5 Virgen del Puerto (7 reviews)
    - Imposing statue

    Virgen del Puerto image
At the far end of the promenade (Paseo Pereda) you’ll see this imposing statue on the hill next to the large block of flats. I counted just over a hundred steps to the top (there is a bench halfway!) and you get some great views back along the estuary and over towards Laredo. The flats below are a bit of a concrete eyesore so you just have to ignore them. If you take the road to the right behind the statue then after a short distance you’ll arrive at the old fort of San Carlos on the headland - you can walk inside the large structure and look out over the sea and also climb on top for even better views. Worth the effort to see both the structures and the views. See more..

See more..

See more..
