  1. 3.5 Catedral de Santander (602 reviews)
    - The Cathedral that Providence didn`t keep. For 1 Euro.
Historic Sites • Religious Sites • Monuments & Statues
    Catedral de Santander image
Divine Providence did not preserve this Cathedral of the XII-XIV centuries. After surviving the middle ages, the Cathedral was severely damaged by the explosion of the steamship Cabo Machichaco on the roadstead. in 1893. There was enough dynamite to reach the Cathedral. Oddly enough, the Cathedral survived the civil war of 1936-1939, although Santander was stubbornly defended by the Republicans. However, 2 years later, Santander burned down in a fire in 1941. The restored Cathedral has an unusual structure. It consists of two churches and a cloister monastery. The lower Church, also called the Crypt earlier -XII century. The upper one was built in the 13th century in the Gothic style, as was the lower Church of Christ. A fire in 1941 destroyed most of the decor, except for the walls and columns. I liked the cloister best. It is very cozy. You can't visit the Cathedral for free. Only for 1 Euro. See more..

    Refugio Antiaéreo image
This air raid shelter is one of the 114 built in Santander during the Spanish Civil War. It was "buried" during the Santander fire of 1941, then re-discovered during the last decade. It is located in Plaza del Principe and entrance costs $2 per person, but you can get 3 sites visits for $4 (the air raid shelter, the old Santander wall, located nearby, and the cathedral tower). The tours are by appointment. The tour guide explanations were only in Spanish. There is a re-enactment of an air raid, with sound effects trying to replicate what people inside the shelter felt while the bombs dropped. Inside the shelter there is also a 240 kilogram bomb displayed, as well as a mannequin dressed as a German air pilot and a cenotaph in memory of two dead German airmen from the Condor Legion. A highly recommended visit. See more..

    Capilla-Panteon image
The Chapel-Pantheon is located in the gardens of Sobrellano, and the style is Neo-Gothic. This was the work of the architect Joan Martorell. The work was finished in 1881. The material used was stone. The main façade has a tall tower. The interior has beautiful stained glass windows and the first furniture designed by Gaudi. There are pantheons of writers like Joseph Llimona and the Vallmitjana Brothers. This structure is like a small cathedral. See more..
  4. 4.0 Juliobriga (55 reviews)
    - Great views
    Historic Sites
    Juliobriga image
We have been to Juliobriga several times, we often go up there for a picnic, or to take visitors. There are fantastic views across the valley to the mountains, and even without going into the visitor's centre (which doesn't always seem to be open), which we've never actually done, there is a lot to see for free. The ruins are very interesting and well explained, and it's interesting to look at the fields around the site, you can clearly see that there is more still buried away - as my mother said, a Time Team dream! 9. 3.5 Fuerte San Carlos (15 reviews)
    - Interesting structure
    Historic Sites
    Fuerte San Carlos image
I walked to the far end of the promenade, noticed the statue on the hill next to the large block of flats and decided to climb the hundred or so steps to have a look. There’s a road behind the statue and I walked along to the right towards the headland and came across the fort at the end of the road. It looks run down and derelict but inside I was surprised at just how well built and large an expanse it is - guess a lot of militia were kept busy here back in the day! At the far end you can look out through the portals over the Bay of Biscay. You can also climb on top for a walk round and look over the estuary towards Laredo. There’s another structure to the left a bit higher up but I didn’t have time to explore it. The fort is worth the effort of a visit if you’re in the area. See more..

Casco Histórico De Santillana Del Mar image
Charming historic centre of Santillana Del Mar with cobbled streets, traditional Cantabrian houses, the Collegiate Church of Santillana, some interesting landmarks and the obligatory tourist shops. There's a tourist office where you can get a map of the points of interest in the town. About 2km from the centre is the Museo de Altamira, which is definitely worth a visit. Be careful not to visit on a Sunday or Monday though as the museums are closed, which makes things less interesting. See more..

El Corro de Campíos The Camp or place of Campios is in the center of the historical Comillas, it is a wide pedestrian plaza filled with allot of cafes and terraces who are giving the visitors a great choice of animation. El Corro Campíos is the place of leisure in the town, where once they played bowling and danced on Sundays, all of this in the surrounding area of the church of San Cristóbal. From here it is only a few passes away from the homonymous neighborhood, who is one of the most typical of Comillas, in this location you easily will find good examples of the traditional and mountain architecture of the town. 18. 4.5 Antiguo Muelle De Limpias (2 reviews)
    - A charming old quayside
Wednesday: 12:00 AM - 11:59 PM Historic Sites • Historic Walking Areas
    Antiguo Muelle De Limpias image
A delightful place! It's just a hop and skip from the Ayuntamiento de Limpias, the Town Hall. A handsome building with flagpoles outside. At the other side of the little square there is a small, and pretty ancient-looking, stone bridge, going across one branch of the river Asón, or maybe it's a small tributary? Immediately on leaving the bridge bear left, and you are on the Antiguo Muelle, the Former Quay of Limpias. Sited as it is on a tidal estuary it was clearly used for moving goods down river. Iron ore is believed to have been the main cargo here, from the 14th century until the 19th. It is backed by some handsome houses, possibly those of merchants. A little further down is an old and ugly building, the former Lonja, the auction house or market for the fish brought in both from the river and the sea. The upper storey of this building is said to have been used as accommodation for seafarers. They would be used to sleeping with a smell of fish, one supposes! The quayside itself joins up with, is in fact the beginning of, the Paseo de la Ría del Asón, the lovely riverside walk that you must take. See more..
  19. 3.5 Palacio De Los Condes De Limpias (2 reviews)
    - Battle of the Condes?
Historic Sites • Monuments & Statues
Palacio De Los Condes De Limpias image
Now a "Palacio" in theory is a Palace, a magnificent building. In Spain an elegant noble house, or one once belonging to a rich merchant, is often called a "Palacete", a little Palace. But the Counts of Limpias went for the full-blown "Palacio" to describe what is, frankly, just a biggish house. Possibly they wished to hold their own against the Palacio de los Condes de Albox at the other end of the village, although that is much bigger, much grander, and set in extensive grounds, not in a huddle of houses as is the Palacio de los Condes de Limpias. The Condes de Albox Palace, by the way, is now the Parador Hotel and Restaurant. Built originally in the 17th-18th centuries, the Palacio de los Condes de Limpias was modernised and, well I suppose one could say "upgraded" in the last years of the 19th century, including the then equivalent of a modern-day conservatory extension: a tower complete with battlements, shield of arms, gothic-styled windows, the whole totally out of keeping with the house itself or indeed the rest of the village. But it showed those Counts of Albox what investing a bit of money could do! See more..
  20. 3.0 Casco Antiguo De Limpias (2 reviews)
    - A scattering of interesting buildings and a lovely riverside walk
    Historic Sites • Architectural Buildings
    Casco Antiguo De Limpias image
This little town, possibly best to be called a large village, has some interesting buildings, but somewhat scattered. There is not one central square, called elsewhere the Plaza Mayor, with both the administrative building, the main parish church, the houses of noblemen and merchants of times past. Instead you have to search to find them all. But it's all good for your health as you stroll around!

See more..

Ayuntamiento De Santillana Del Mar image
Located in the old market square of Santillana del Mar is one of the more prominent buildings in the town. The city hall building is a functioning civic building and has a charming romanesque arcade, below the balcony on the upper floor. The exterior has a coat of arms of the town featuring lions and sirens, and stamped by the crown of the marquisate. The building is open to the general public and there was no objection when I asked to wander up to the 2 upper floors. The lower floor is the reception area for the (Spanish) public, while the upper floors are mostly offices. Probably no more than you’d expect for a town hall for a small town. See more..
