  1. 3.5 Catedral de Santander (602 reviews)
    - The Cathedral that Providence didn`t keep. For 1 Euro.

    Catedral de Santander image
Divine Providence did not preserve this Cathedral of the XII-XIV centuries. After surviving the middle ages, the Cathedral was severely damaged by the explosion of the steamship Cabo Machichaco on the roadstead. in 1893. There was enough dynamite to reach the Cathedral. Oddly enough, the Cathedral survived the civil war of 1936-1939, although Santander was stubbornly defended by the Republicans. However, 2 years later, Santander burned down in a fire in 1941. The restored Cathedral has an unusual structure. It consists of two churches and a cloister monastery. The lower Church, also called the Crypt earlier -XII century. The upper one was built in the 13th century in the Gothic style, as was the lower Church of Christ. A fire in 1941 destroyed most of the decor, except for the walls and columns. I liked the cloister best. It is very cozy. You can't visit the Cathedral for free. Only for 1 Euro. See more..
  2. 4.0 Monumento a Los Raqueros (428 reviews)
    - Joyful Scenes, But Sad Past
    Monuments & Statues
    Monumento a Los Raqueros image
This cute sculptural ensemble seemingly celebrates the joys of youth, but sadly hides a sad part of Santander. There was a time when beachcombers such as the poor and orphaned children, who frequented the docks of Santander Bay, survived through petty theft. Sometimes coins would be thrown into the sea from passengers of passing boats. The children would dive into the sea to find the coins as depicted in the sculptures. See more..

Monument to the Marques de Comillas image
This monument was erected in honour of Don Antonio López y López, the 1st Marquis of Comillas who made his fortune in Cuba and was raised to nobility thanks to the financial support he gave to King Alfonso XII. The monument is tall, standing about 30m high. The statue of the Marquis is erected on a pedestal in the shape of a ship's prow in reference to the maritime business interests of the Marquis. The monument is placed on a cliff, overlooking the Sea of Biscay, but if you’re willing to hike to Parque Güell y Martos, you can see the back of the monument up close. See more..
  4. 4.5 Virgen del Puerto (7 reviews)
    - Imposing statue

    Virgen del Puerto image
At the far end of the promenade (Paseo Pereda) you’ll see this imposing statue on the hill next to the large block of flats. I counted just over a hundred steps to the top (there is a bench halfway!) and you get some great views back along the estuary and over towards Laredo. The flats below are a bit of a concrete eyesore so you just have to ignore them. If you take the road to the right behind the statue then after a short distance you’ll arrive at the old fort of San Carlos on the headland - you can walk inside the large structure and look out over the sea and also climb on top for even better views. Worth the effort to see both the structures and the views. See more..

  9. 3.5 Palacio De Los Condes De Limpias (2 reviews)
    - Battle of the Condes?

Palacio De Los Condes De Limpias image
Now a "Palacio" in theory is a Palace, a magnificent building. In Spain an elegant noble house, or one once belonging to a rich merchant, is often called a "Palacete", a little Palace. But the Counts of Limpias went for the full-blown "Palacio" to describe what is, frankly, just a biggish house. Possibly they wished to hold their own against the Palacio de los Condes de Albox at the other end of the village, although that is much bigger, much grander, and set in extensive grounds, not in a huddle of houses as is the Palacio de los Condes de Limpias. The Condes de Albox Palace, by the way, is now the Parador Hotel and Restaurant. Built originally in the 17th-18th centuries, the Palacio de los Condes de Limpias was modernised and, well I suppose one could say "upgraded" in the last years of the 19th century, including the then equivalent of a modern-day conservatory extension: a tower complete with battlements, shield of arms, gothic-styled windows, the whole totally out of keeping with the house itself or indeed the rest of the village. But it showed those Counts of Albox what investing a bit of money could do! See more..

    Corazón de Jesús image
This statue was commissioned by the 2nd Marquis of Comillas after the Spanish king, Alfonso XIII pledged himself and his kingdom more devotedly to the Sacred Heart of Jesus Christ, which is where the statue also gets its name. Located high up in the neighbourhood known as “La Peña”, the statue is a typical sculpture of this kind. Jesus is depicted standing tall, one hand outstretched, while the other is touching his heart. A nice stop on a walking tour of Comillas. See more..
