  1. 4.5 Watersnoodmuseum (439 reviews)
    - An absolute must when visiting the Netherlands
Wednesday: 10:00 AM - 5:00 PM Spent 2-3 hours Speciality Museums
    Watersnoodmuseum image
I lived in the Netherlands for 22 years and had read about the water disatster and had heard about it from collegues, but nothing prepares you for the experience of this museum. I always just thought a dyke broke and an area was flooded. However the scale of the disaster was enormous and this museum really gives a wonderful account of what happened with stories about real people and what they went through. I would describe it as a Tsunami hitting the Dutch coast in 1953 and killing more than 2000 people. It's very sad but gives a great account of the disaster and the way the Dutch have defended their coast now with the Delta works. The staff were amazing and extremely helpful. Thank you so much for making our visit wonderful. See more..

There are also exotic tropical butterflies, colorful chameleons, stick insects, frogs and toucans in the most spectacular colors. You can even go underground in the Fossil mine to discover mammoths and dinosaurs or a lion or rhino of close quarters. Stoomtrein Goes-Borsele image
Lovely activity for train enthusiasts, those young at heart or generally historically interested. Lovely way to feel and experience history. The steamtrain and it's stations give you moneys worth of experiences and was a good days activity. This is indeed best experienced on a sunny day, but despite the rain we had a good day. Sometimes it was obvious that this was not very professional, but my hat off to all the volunteers making the train running days come through. See more..

Very nice! This summer we couldn’t go as much to the beach as we would have wanted. This zoo is an excellent solution to bad weather. We spent around 2,5 hours inside. 21. 4.5 Vrouwenpolder Beach (87 reviews)
    - Great nude beach, popular with Belgian, Dutch and German gays.
    Beaches
    Vrouwenpolder Beach image
Vrouwenpolder Beach has also a naturist section. It's very popular with Belgians as they don't have anything similar in Belgium. And especially gays are fond of it. There's always some cruising around but be aware, it's not allowed to walk in the dunes. But as the distance between 2 warning signs is rather large, you can always pretend you're not really in the dunes. See more..

Groede podium is a nice free playground for children. However, there is also quite many animals to look at... for example very friendly and charming donkeys. What also makes the place so interesting is that it has a historical aspect. This was the old Breskens 06 position of the German army in World War II, so there is several bunkers that you can visit for free on the area. See more..
  24. 4.5 Lighthouse Westkapelle (high) (81 reviews)
    - A moving experience..
Points of Interest & Landmarks • Lighthouses
    Lighthouse Westkapelle (high) image
There's some confusion in this review because the lighthouse is officially the very tall building right in the town not the red and white structure shown in two of the photos. In the grounds of the lighthouse are graves and monuments remembering the civilians who were killed in 1944 during the fighting to liberate Walcharan. On 1 Nov 2014 I attended the 70th anniversary memorial ceremony to remember those who died. When you visit here walk round the memorials reading the names and ages - it's very moving. See more..

Stadhuismuseum conveys the story of the historic city of Zierikzee and her surroundings. The museum got her name from the building it is housed in, the former city hall. 'Stadhuis' being the Dutch word for city hall. The city Zierikzee, which experienced its heyday in the middelares, was shaped largely during this period. The houses, buildings and even our monumental building take you back in time. The architecture, the modern collection and the possibility to learn more about life in Zierikzee and the surrounding region all contribute to the experience. Visit Stadhuismuseum Zierikzee and travel through the story of Zierikzee. A day trip to Zierikzee is not compleet without a visit to the Stadhuismuseum. See more..

    Wijnhoeve de kleine Schorre image
We had heard in South Africa (our guest house owners in Tulbagh) that there are wineries in this area. But it was nice surprise to see one on our way to Schuddebeurs. Really enjoyable visit. 30. 4.0 Landingsmonument (70 reviews)
    - There are actually several monuments to visit....
    Points of Interest & Landmarks
    Landingsmonument image
I was in Westkapelle for the 70th Anniversary of the landings that resulted in the liberation of Walcheren. It was referred to as Operation Infatuate and one of my uncles died there on 2 Nov 1944. Operation Infatuate is often overlooked by historians but it was crucial to the allied advance through Europe in 1944. I think it's best if you start any visit at the museum (Polderhuis) then go up the 'Liberty Bridge' that leads to the tank monument where you will find a memorial to the fallen, one of the names is my uncle. Looking left from the tank you can see the coastguard station and just before that is the main 'Erica' memorial, it's about a 10 minute walk and from there you can head back down the dyke into town and visit the Lighthouse. Going right from the tank there are memorials to the Norwegian and Belgian commandos who took part in the operation. I haven't visited these but I understand the Belgian memorial is almost in Domburg, so it's maybe 50 minutes on foot or 20 by bike. See more..

  34. 4.0 The Town Hall Museum Vierschaar (58 reviews)
    - A picturesque touristic town on the lake "Veerse Meer"
    Speciality Museums
The Town Hall Museum Vierschaar image
As Veere, at the island of Walcheren, is not far from where we live we have visited this lovely town several times. Veere is a tourist town on the "Veerse Meer" lake but once it was very mighty. Ships from Scotland once moored in large numbers because Veere was the staple port for Scottisch wool in the 16th century. A Scottish colony was established here at that time. Veere played an important economic role for Scotland in those days. The townhouse is a museum but there is not very much to see inside. Veere itself is small but very picturesque with a number of shops, restaurants and terraces. In the summertime there are lots of touristic events. See more..
  35. 4.5 Zuidhavenpoort Zierikzee (58 reviews)
    - Once effective protection of city and harbour
Spent < 1 hour Historic Sites • Architectural Buildings
    Zuidhavenpoort Zierikzee image
Built during medieval times before gunpowder was invented or at least not widely used yet, The core of Zuidhavenpoort dates from the 14th century and was improved in the 1500s. End 18th century the gatebuilding got its definitive shape. As a military object it must have been impressive in 16th century Zeeland and effective in protecting the harbour and city, though eventually after a long siege Zierikzee fell to the Spanish (1576). The city never really recovered, one of the reasons so many historic buildings have remained intact. More prosperous cities demolished most medieval structures. See more..
  36. 4.5 Liberation Museum Zeeland (56 reviews)
    - Fantastic collection and preservation of WWII info and artifacts! I learned so much!
Wednesday: 11:00 AM - 5:00 PM Spent 2-3 hours Speciality Museums
    Liberation Museum Zeeland image
The Bevrijdingsmuseum (Liberation Museum) in Zeeland shows the eventful history of Zeeland during World War II. The museum has a particular focus on the 'Battle of the Scheldt'. Until now, there has been too little awareness and recognition, both nationally and internationally, of the importance of this battle. The largely forgotten Battle of the Scheldt was the longest and fiercest battle on Dutch territory. What was at stake was the opening-up of the port of Antwerp to shipping. This would make it possible to provide the Allied war effort with a crucial supply line and allow the stalled offensive in Western Europe to starting moving again. The outcome of this crucial operation was directly decisive for the further course of the Second World War in Western Europe. The museum also pays tribute to the Zeeland Battalion. This consisted largely of volunteers who, after the liberation of Zeeland, wanted to join in the fight for the liberation of the Netherlands and Western Europe. After World War II, however, the battalion was sent to the Dutch East Indies. From 2017, visitors can also see the new 3-hectare Bevrijdingspark (Liberation Park) in Zeeland. The concept of the Liberation Park is unique. Nowhere in Western Europe is there a similar layout. Set amongst the characteristic Zeeland elements of water, beach and dikes, the park illustrates the period of the 1939-1945 war and the Battle of the Scheldt in particular. The unique and preserved noodkerk (emergency church) of Ellewoutsdijk was reconstructed and rebuilt in the park. This emergency church, after the destruction of the original church by a bombardment, was constructed from so-called Nissen huts. Another unique feature is the Stiltebos (silent wood), a place where there is room for contemplation and reflection. In addition, the Liberation Park features bunkers, a bailey bridge, roadblocks, a Sherman tank and so on. See more..

  40. 4.0 Museum Veere (46 reviews)
    - Must see museum in Veere
Wednesday: 10:00 AM - 5:00 PM Spent 1-2 hours Speciality Museums • Monuments & Statues
    Museum Veere image
Museum Veere is established in two beautiful historic buildings: The Scottish Houses along de quay and the monumental City Hall on the Market. Together they bring the stirring history of this small city of Veere to live. The unique 16th century statues that once adorned the façade of the City Hall are part of our collection and on display in our ‘Statue hall’. The famous gilded goblet of Maximilian shines in the old council chamber. Veere was once the centre of the profitable wool trade between Scotland and the Low Countries. After considerable effort the town won staple-rights on Scottish wool in 1541, meaning that the goods had to be made available for purchase there for a set time before being allowed to go on sale elsewhere. This important and profitable trade right encouraged Scottish merchants to establish themselves in Veere permanently. See more..

    - KUIPERSPOORT MIDDELBURG; an architectural gem dating from 1642

    Rijksmonument Kuiperspoort Middelburg image
I enjoyed the charming historical alley called "Kuiperspoort";The 17th century buildings are reached via a discreet gate located hidden behind the canal called Rouaanse Kaai. The wooden barrels needed to store water, beer and wine for the 17th-18th century trade-ships were made here. A Kuiper is the Dutch word for a maker of wooden barrels. In the 17th and 18th century,Middelburg trade companies(WIC,West Indische Compagnie) were an important investor in the Transatlantic Slave Trade to Surinam and Curacao as well as the spice trade (VOC) to the East Indies. This secluded alley maintains the historical architecture of that period, but obviously the living conditions are much improved making for a quiet residential area. See more..
