Once effective protection of city and harbour

Built during medieval times before gunpowder was invented or at least not widely used yet, The core of Zuidhavenpoort dates from the 14th century and was improved in the 1500s. End 18th century the gatebuilding got its definitive shape. As a military object it must have been impressive in 16th century Zeeland and effective in protecting the harbour and city, though eventually after a long siege Zierikzee fell to the Spanish (1576). The city never really recovered, one of the reasons so many historic buildings have remained intact. More prosperous cities demolished most medieval structures.

    #1 view in Zierikzee
Zierikzee has many monuments and the whole city has stunning views and scenery. But the Zuidhavenpoort is perhaps the most beautiful spot in the old city centre. Enjoy it from the terrace of Brasserie De Kaoie and double the pleasure.

    Elegant and well preserved
The ancient gate is still in use if you enter the city by bike or on foot. In front of the gate is a bronze statue symbolizing the resurrection of the city and the island after the massive flooding of 1953
