I lived in the Netherlands for 22 years and had read about the water disatster and had heard about it from collegues, but nothing prepares you for the experience of this museum. I always just thought a dyke broke and an area was flooded. However the scale of the disaster was enormous and this museum really gives a wonderful account of what happened with stories about real people and what they went through. I would describe it as a Tsunami hitting the Dutch coast in 1953 and killing more than 2000 people. It's very sad but gives a great account of the disaster and the way the Dutch have defended their coast now with the Delta works. The staff were amazing and extremely helpful. Lovely activity for train enthusiasts, those young at heart or generally historically interested. Lovely way to feel and experience history. The steamtrain and it's stations give you moneys worth of experiences and was a good days activity. This is indeed best experienced on a sunny day, but despite the rain we had a good day. Sometimes it was obvious that this was not very professional, but my hat off to all the volunteers making the train running days come through. See more..

As Veere, at the island of Walcheren, is not far from where we live we have visited this lovely town several times. Veere is a tourist town on the "Veerse Meer" lake but once it was very mighty. Ships from Scotland once moored in large numbers because Veere was the staple port for Scottisch wool in the 16th century. A Scottish colony was established here at that time. Veere played an important economic role for Scotland in those days. The townhouse is a museum but there is not very much to see inside. Veere itself is small but very picturesque with a number of shops, restaurants and terraces. In the summertime there are lots of touristic events. See more..

The Bevrijdingsmuseum (Liberation Museum) in Zeeland shows the eventful history of Zeeland during World War II. The museum has a particular focus on the 'Battle of the Scheldt'. Until now, there has been too little awareness and recognition, both nationally and internationally, of the importance of this battle. The largely forgotten Battle of the Scheldt was the longest and fiercest battle on Dutch territory. What was at stake was the opening-up of the port of Antwerp to shipping. This would make it possible to provide the Allied war effort with a crucial supply line and allow the stalled offensive in Western Europe to starting moving again. The outcome of this crucial operation was directly decisive for the further course of the Second World War in Western Europe. The museum also pays tribute to the Zeeland Battalion. This consisted largely of volunteers who, after the liberation of Zeeland, wanted to join in the fight for the liberation of the Netherlands and Western Europe. After World War II, however, the battalion was sent to the Dutch East Indies. From 2017, visitors can also see the new 3-hectare Bevrijdingspark (Liberation Park) in Zeeland. The concept of the Liberation Park is unique. Nowhere in Western Europe is there a similar layout. Set amongst the characteristic Zeeland elements of water, beach and dikes, the park illustrates the period of the 1939-1945 war and the Battle of the Scheldt in particular. The unique and preserved noodkerk (emergency church) of Ellewoutsdijk was reconstructed and rebuilt in the park. This emergency church, after the destruction of the original church by a bombardment, was constructed from so-called Nissen huts. Another unique feature is the Stiltebos (silent wood), a place where there is room for contemplation and reflection. In addition, the Liberation Park features bunkers, a bailey bridge, roadblocks, a Sherman tank and so on. See more..

The famous gilded goblet of Maximilian shines in the old council chamber. Veere was once the centre of the profitable wool trade between Scotland and the Low Countries. After considerable effort the town won staple-rights on Scottish wool in 1541, meaning that the goods had to be made available for purchase there for a set time before being allowed to go on sale elsewhere. Visited not the museum but only the restaurant. Food was of high standard. Normally the salmon is not that good, really! Tera Maris is located in a “hidden” area; not so many tourists visit. Please try to walk through the area and visit the quit and clean beach. It’s venue is in the vicinity of the castle “Kasteel Westhove”. Price is somewhat on the high side. See more..

On a group camping holiday nearby 40 of us Brits decided to learn the Dutch skill of Bolus making at the Brusea Fishermans Museum. Much to the amusement of onlookers and staff alike we were all given the opportunity to roll and scroll a Bolus which was then baked for consumption along with a coffee or tea. We all then took time to visit the museum exhibits and learn the life and hazards of being a fisherman out of the port of Bruinisse in the olden days and the story of the Mussel fishing that is now so important to this region of Holland. As well as being educational we all had a fun day at the Fishermans Museum and we all hope to visit again in the future perhaps next time learning the skill of Mussel cooking (and eating!). Many thanks to all the staff for explaining the museum and showing us Bolus making - keep up the good work. See more..
