Built during medieval times before gunpowder was invented or at least not widely used yet, The core of Zuidhavenpoort dates from the 14th century and was improved in the 1500s. End 18th century the gatebuilding got its definitive shape. As a military object it must have been impressive in 16th century Zeeland and effective in protecting the harbour and city, though eventually after a long siege Zierikzee fell to the Spanish (1576). The city never really recovered, one of the reasons so many historic buildings have remained intact. More prosperous cities demolished most medieval structures. See more..

We were everso impressed with the bunker tour. The couple who showed us the bunkers were knowledgeable, friendly and clearly passionate about the restoration of the bunkers. Both spoke English extremely well and gave us so much information about the Battle of the Scheldt. This is a 'must- see' attraction for any WW2 enthusiasts and very reasonably priced at just 8 euros for an adult. See more..

I enjoyed the charming historical alley called "Kuiperspoort";The 17th century buildings are reached via a discreet gate located hidden behind the canal called Rouaanse Kaai. The wooden barrels needed to store water,beer and wine for the 17th-18th century trade-ships were made here. A Kuiper is the Dutch word for a maker of wooden barrels. In the 17th and 18th century,Middelburg trade companies(WIC,West Indische Compagnie) were an important investor in the Transatlantic Slave Trade to Surinam and Curacao as well as the spice trade (VOC) to the East Indies. This secluded alley maintains the historical architecture of that period,but obviously the living conditions are much improved making for a quiet residential area. See more..

Fort Rammekens is the oldest sea fortress in Western Europe, built in 1547. It is consolidated, i.e. preserved as it is, without restoring it. This gives the fort a nice ruinous look. Emperor Charles V ordered it to be constructed. During the Dutch revolt against Spain (80-years war) the people of Flushing lured the Spanish garrison out of the fort by a feigned attack on Arnemuiden, so that they could easily take the fort. Napoleon had casemates constructed in the fort. There are guided tours through the casemates and the rest of the fort, and through the nature around the fort. See more..

Like most cities in the 14th century low lands Zierikzee built a 'Gasthuis' where people without shelter could be accommodated. Usually drifters and other people in need like the sick and poor elderly without relatives were provided basic support here. Always first a chapel was built (to take care of the soul) and later a large rectangular room or hall was added. You can still observe this pattern in the present-day Gasthuiskerk. At the south side of the structure facing the square you can see an arcaded gallery. This extension was made later (in 1651) and served local grain merchants and their customers. It is the reason why many observers including me, at first glance think the building is a market hall of some sort. However it is a church. The 'Gasthuis' was demolished in 1814, the 'Gasthuiskerk' (the church part) survived until today and is used by the Dutch reformed community in Zierikzee. See more..

De korenmolen "Den Haas" is een van de twee overgebleven korenmolens van Zierikzee. Daar waar zijn collega "De Hoop" midden in de stad staat, hoog uitstekend boven de historische bebouwing, staat "Den Haas" aan de rand van Zierikzee, bij het Bolwerk, restant van de vroegere verdedigingswerken van de stad. "Den Haas" is een fikse ronde stenen molen, type stellingmolen. De stelling is bij deze molen duidelijk te onderscheiden en werd gebruikt om de molen nog hoger op te tillen, zodat meer wind werd gevangen. "Den Haas" werd, zoals op haar baard te lezen is, gebouwd in 1727, ter vervanging van een vroeg 17e eeuwse standerdmolen genaamd "De Flesse", die werd gesloopt in 1723. Op "Den Haas" tref je aan grote gedenksteen aan, die herinnert aan de 1e steenlegging op 20 maart 1727. Dit weekend scheen de zon en aanrijdend op de stad Zierikzee kon je al van ver zowel "Den Haas" als "De Hoop" vrolijk draaiend zien staan. Dat maakt de dag goed! See more..

A rather big historic church in a relatively small village of just 328 inhabitants. After a thorough renovation (2013) it is now not only the center of the Protestant community, but also suitable for other purposes. The church was built in 1440, but set on fire by 'watergeuzen' (rebels fighting Spanish occupation) in 1576. Spanish soldiers who withdrew to the church and tower were attacked. The ones who tried to escape from the burning building and eventually jumped from the tower -22 in number- were brutally killed on the ground, if still alive. In 1589 the church was rebuilt. There was an interesting exhibition inside the church with photos of the big flood in 1953. Noordwelle got inundated and all villagers were evacuated. Stunning pictures. See more..

Many Dutch have at least some knowledge of Saartje Burgerhart published in 1782. Aagje Deken grew up in an Amsterdam orphanage. Betje and Aagje became close friends and started living together after Betje's husband died. There is a lot of speculation about the degree of intimacy of their relationship. Ronde bakstenen Stellingmolen, gebouwd in 1850. Na een brand in 1874 werd de molen opnieuw opgebouwd tot een slanke, bakstenen molen. De huidige molenaar is T. van der Bok die de molen nog steeds actief in productie houdt. De Gemeente Zierikzee is eigenaar. Het bedrijf is niet voor het publiek toegankelijk, maar een vriendelijk praatje doet wonderen. Deze molen herbergt op de steenzolder drie door windkracht aangedreven maalstenen. Op de begane grond staan een elektrisch aangedreven walsenstoel, een elektrisch aangedreven maalstoel met 16der (140 cm doorsnee) blauwe molenstenen en een mengketel. Aan de prachtige ring in Dreischor treft u op nr. 2 het voormalige ‘plaetsenhuys’, raadhuisje dat werd gebouwd in 1637. Het devies ‘Doet wel en vreest niemant’ wordt rechts (boven de deur) geflankeerd door het wapen van Jan Stavenisse.
Dit wapen, dat symbolisch water voorstelt vergezeld van turven, duidt op het beroep van de stamvader, die voor 1400 bij Beldert fortuin maakte met de selnering (zoutwinning). Het wapen links was wellicht van de secretaris. In het midden van de gevel ziet u links het wapen van Zeeland, rechts het wapen van Dreischor en in het midden vrouwe Justitia.
Boven het zolderraampje hangt de bel, die op zondagmorgen na de kerkdienst werd geluid, om de bevolking bijeen te roepen, om de afkondiging van huwelijk of verkoping aan te horen. Naast het poortje hangt de standaard-el, waaraan de plaatselijke lengtematen werden geijkt. Je zal er maar wonen in dit zeer mooie maar oud raadhuisje See more..

Dit opvallende huis aan de kerkring van Zonnemaire werd omstreeks 1640 als woning gebouwd voor de toenmalige secretaris (hoge bestuurder) van Zonnemaire, genaamd Pieter Eeuwigrijck. De gevelsteen in de voorgevel toont waarschijnlijk diens geslachtswapen. In de 18e en 19e eeuw diende het gebouw als pastorie van de tegenovergelegen hervormde kerk. Van 1943 tot 1961 was dit pand het raadhuis van Zonnemaire. Thans is het weer woonhuis. Het huis is opgetrokken in gele bakstenen, met hier en daar decoratieve rode en lichtgekleurde natuurstenen blokken, zoals in de ontlastingsbogen boven de vensters. Mooie trapgevel, mooie sierankers. Zonder nadere uitleg onbegrijpelijk monument ter nagedachtenis aan de watersnoodramp uit 1953. Het schijnt het dualisme voor de Zeeuwen te moeten voorstellen met enerzijds hun afhankelijkheid van de visserij en aan de andere kant het monsterlijke roofdier dat hier leeft in de zee en de bevolking bedreigt. De waaggebouwen van plaatsen die belangrijke handelscentra waren zijn vaak voornaam ogende gebouwen, met luifels en voorzien van interessante gevelstenen. Op een plaatje zag ik de Stadswaag van Brouwershaven. De geringe omvang van het gebouw en de sobere gevel verbaasde mij. Op bezoek in Brouwershaven maar eens gaan kijken. Het kleine, vrijwel vierkante gebouw heeft slechts een simpele gevelsteen met de tekst "Stadswaag". Deze waag werd omstreeks 1645 gebouwd en verving een elders in het stadje gelegen Waag uit 1597. De stadswaag werd in 1819 verbouwd. Het gebouw was niet alleen de plek om handelsgoederen, zoals graan en vis, te wegen. Het gebouw diende ook als opslagruimte. Daar waar elders de weeginstrumenten zijn behouden, zelfs indien in het gebouw geheel andere activiteiten plaats hebben (zoals horeca), is er van de inhoud van de stadswaag van Brouwershaven niets meer te zien. In het gebouw is al enige tijd een huisartsenpraktijk gevestigd. Gebouw kan nauwelijks meer tot de bezienswaardigheden van Brouwershaven worden getekend. See more..

In de smalle Hoogstraat in het historisch centrum van de stad Tholen treffen we het voormalig stadhuis aan. Een hoog, smal gebouw, ingesloten tussen de panden in de straat. Je moet je in allerlei bochten wringen om het gebouw goed te bekijken. Dit stadhuis werd omstreeks 1475 gebouwd, in laat-gotische stijl. Het verving een raadhuis ("schepenhuis") dat op deze plek stond en dat bij de grote stadsbrand in 1452 ten onder ging. De voorgevel van het stadhuis is bekleed met natuursteen. Op de gevel kantelen waarop een aantal leeuwen die goudkleurige vaandels vasthouden, waarop wapenschilden zijn afgebeeld. De voorgevel wordt gedekt door een zeshoekig torentje met een carillon. De oudste klok daarin is 15e eeuws. Tot in de 20e eeuw is het carillon aangevuld met klokken. Het voorname dubbele bordes voor het stadhuis is een toevoeging uit ca. 1760, in z.g. rococo-stijl. De bouwmeester van het 15e eeuwse stadhuis is niet bekend. Sommigen menen dat het het werk is van de beroemde Vlaamse bouwmeester Andries Keldermans (1400-1488). Erg mooi gebouw!

Uit baksteen opgetrokken Zeeuwse witte Korenmolen uit 1847. De molen heeft met een korte onderbreking in 50- en 60 jaren van vorige eeuw altijd op wind gedraaid. Het Molenaars geslacht Verhage heeft de molen lange tijd in bezit gehad en geëxploiteerd. Daarna wisselende eigenaren. Na de laatste renovatie in 2009, thans toch weer een verlaten indruk. See more..

Alleen aan de buitenzijde is nog te zien dat het hier om de vroegere St. Laurenskapel gaat. Oorspronkelijk uit 1452 doch na een brand, herbouwd in 1460. Sinds 1975 wordt de kapel door de eigenaar de Gemeente Tholen, verhuurd aan de Hervormde kerk, Immanuël. Helaas bleek het gebouw gesloten zonder vermelding of en wanneer het interieur te bezichtigen is. See more..
