There's some confusion in this review because the lighthouse is officially the very tall building right in the town not the red and white structure shown in two of the photos. In the grounds of the lighthouse are graves and monuments remembering the civilians who were killed in 1944 during the fighting to liberate Walcharan. On 1 Nov 2014 I attended the 70th anniversary memorial ceremony to remember those who died. When you visit here walk round the memorials reading the names and ages - it's very moving. See more..

I was in Westkapelle for the 70th Anniversary of the landings that resulted in the liberation of Walcheren. It was referred to as Operation Infatuate and one of my uncles died there on 2 Nov 1944. Operation Infatuate is often overlooked by historians but it was crucial to the allied advance through Europe in 1944. I think it's best if you start any visit at the museum (Polderhuis) then go up the 'Liberty Bridge' that leads to the tank monument where you will find a memorial to the fallen, one of the names is my uncle. Looking left from the tank you can see the coastguard station and just before that is the main 'Erica' memorial, it's about a 10 minute walk and from there you can head back down the dyke into town and visit the Lighthouse. Going right from the tank there are memorials to the Norwegian and Belgian commandos who took part in the operation. I haven't visited these but I understand the Belgian memorial is almost in Domburg, so it's maybe 50 minutes on foot or 20 by bike. See more..

We were everso impressed with the bunker tour. The couple who showed us the bunkers were knowledgeable, friendly and clearly passionate about the restoration of the bunkers. Both spoke English extremely well and gave us so much information about the Battle of the Scheldt. This is a 'must- see' attraction for any WW2 enthusiasts and very reasonably priced at just 8 euros for an adult. See more..

et Panorama Walcheren surprises the visitor with a unique art project of nine mega paintings, up to 3 meters high and from fourteen to forty meters wide. Each arranged in a curve, so that it feels itself to become part of the image. These are characteristic Walcheren places, each with its own atmosphere and season. In the old machine factory of shipyard De Schelde, now a dynamic Vlissingen development area, the works come into their own. They have been made since 2010 by the Middelburg painter Jo Dumon Tak with a team of volunteers. One work every year. "De Koe" is a flour mill on the Warwijcksestraat on the outskirts of Veere. It is a round, brick-built scaffolding mill from 1909 and whitewashed in the Zeeland tradition. The mill is covered with zinc and has a flight of 23.50 meters. It is an iconic mill that is clearly visible from all sides. The Cow is grinding skills. Closed for visitors. Just over 5 kilometers long it is the longest bridge in the country replacing the ferry between Zierikzee and Kats that until 1965 was the only connection for motorized traffic between Schouwen-Duiveland and Noord-Beveland. At the westside there is a cycling path which is a delight to cycle along. The enormous bodies of water on both sides of the bridge are impressive and quite exceptional by Dutch standards. The bridge construction itself looks a bit 1950s without a lot of space. Avoid crossing by bicycle if you have the wind against you. Crossing the bridge is toll-free for both bicycles/pedestrians and motorized vehicles. See more..

Fort Rammekens is the oldest sea fortress in Western Europe, built in 1547. It is consolidated, i.e. preserved as it is, without restoring it. This gives the fort a nice ruinous look. Emperor Charles V ordered it to be constructed. During the Dutch revolt against Spain (80-years war) the people of Flushing lured the Spanish garrison out of the fort by a feigned attack on Arnemuiden, so that they could easily take the fort. Napoleon had casemates constructed in the fort. There are guided tours through the casemates and the rest of the fort, and through the nature around the fort. See more..

This Wind Organ at the end of the Nolledijk replaced the original one that was destroyed by the storm in 1976. This sculpture consisting of thirty vertically bamboo tubes with holes which will give sound. It is a wind instrument played by the wind. There were three windchimes in the world but this is the only one that still exists. What an experience to be in the middle of this windchime with closed eyes and listening to the sound. See more..

Me and my husband have been a few times now as we are working nearby for the summer. It is such a lovely experience to sit underneith the windmill and enjoy delicious Dutch food and drinks which are very reasonably priced. The lady who works there is very friendly and always helpful. She says they also do tours of the windmill which would be great fun but haven’t done that yet. She also sells fresh flour, eggs and cookies which we love. Would recommend to anybody nearby, especially to families! See more..

The Krammer locks are located in the Philipsdam that is connecting St. Philipsland with Schouwen-Duiveland and Goeree-Overflakkee. The distance between the village of Bruinisse and the locks is 7 km. Completed in 1987 the locks ensure boat traffic between Zeeland and the big rivers Rhine, Meuse and Scheldt is smooth. Quite an achievement these locks: the biggest concrete construction ever undertaken by the Dutch government. It is possible to reach the locks on foot, by bicycle or motorized vehicle. De korenmolen "Den Haas" is een van de twee overgebleven korenmolens van Zierikzee. Daar waar zijn collega "De Hoop" midden in de stad staat, hoog uitstekend boven de historische bebouwing, staat "Den Haas" aan de rand van Zierikzee, bij het Bolwerk, restant van de vroegere verdedigingswerken van de stad. "Den Haas" is een fikse ronde stenen molen, type stellingmolen. De stelling is bij deze molen duidelijk te onderscheiden en werd gebruikt om de molen nog hoger op te tillen, zodat meer wind werd gevangen. "Den Haas" werd, zoals op haar baard te lezen is, gebouwd in 1727, ter vervanging van een vroeg 17e eeuwse standerdmolen genaamd "De Flesse", die werd gesloopt in 1723. Op "Den Haas" tref je aan grote gedenksteen aan, die herinnert aan de 1e steenlegging op 20 maart 1727. Dit weekend scheen de zon en aanrijdend op de stad Zierikzee kon je al van ver zowel "Den Haas" als "De Hoop" vrolijk draaiend zien staan. Dat maakt de dag goed! See more..

A rather big historic church in a relatively small village of just 328 inhabitants. After a thorough renovation (2013) it is now not only the center of the Protestant community, but also suitable for other purposes. The church was built in 1440, but set on fire by 'watergeuzen' (rebels fighting Spanish occupation) in 1576. Spanish soldiers who withdrew to the church and tower were attacked. The ones who tried to escape from the burning building and eventually jumped from the tower -22 in number- were brutally killed on the ground, if still alive. In 1589 the church was rebuilt. There was an interesting exhibition inside the church with photos of the big flood in 1953. Noordwelle got inundated and all villagers were evacuated. Stunning pictures. See more..

Mooie 19e- eeuwse kerk midden in het dorp. Midden 20e eeuw flink uitgebreid met zijvleugels. Wij waren bij een concert van het Urker mannenkoor. In totaal plaats voor ca 1000 mensen. Regelmatig klassieke en koorconcerten. Volgens de gids is dit de grootste kerk van het eiland gemeten naar het aantal zitplaatsen, aardig om te bekijken als je in Sint Annaland bent. See more..

Op zich wel een fraaie kerk in het centrum. De kerk is omgeven door een stenen muurtje en gezien de terrassen van de omliggende horecagelegenheden niet open mogen doet dit muurtje daarom maar dienst als "terras". Het was daardoor erg druk op het muurtje....best wel apart. See more..

Ronde bakstenen Stellingmolen, gebouwd in 1850. Na een brand in 1874 werd de molen opnieuw opgebouwd tot een slanke, bakstenen molen. De huidige molenaar is T. van der Bok die de molen nog steeds actief in productie houdt. De Gemeente Zierikzee is eigenaar. Het bedrijf is niet voor het publiek toegankelijk, maar een vriendelijk praatje doet wonderen. Deze molen herbergt op de steenzolder drie door windkracht aangedreven maalstenen. Op de begane grond staan een elektrisch aangedreven walsenstoel, een elektrisch aangedreven maalstoel met 16der (140 cm doorsnee) blauwe molenstenen en een mengketel. Fraai kerkgebouw met rijke en uitvoerig beschreven geschiedenis. De oorsprong dateert uit de 15e eeuw, toen er grootse plannen bestonden om het welvarende Oosterland te voorzien van een grote Kruiskerk. Door een dorpsbrand in 1612 werd het middendeel van het toenmalige gebouw grotendeels verwoest. Hier kwam later een schoolgebouw en weer later het Gemeentehuis. Dat is nog steeds te zien.
Het interieur kent enkele bijzondere stukken zoals de preekstoel uit 1700 en het doopvont met zilveren schaal. Ook de koperen kroonluchters zijn prachtig. See more..

Fantastisch museum. We kregen een heel interessante rondleiding waar we heel veel van geleerd hebben. De gids was heel vriendelijk en gedreven. Een echte aanrader. Ook 't Uusje aan de overkant is zeker de moeite waard. Ook hier een hele enthousiaste gids die ons rondleidde. Als je naar Arnemuiden gaat moet je dit bezoeken ! See more..

De bouw is begonnen in 1325. Eind 16e eeuw kreeg hij zijn huidige vorm. Een drie beukige hallenkerk. Met bijzondere gotische raamvensters. Binnen is de kerk gedeeltelijk in gebruik als kerk en gedeeltelijk als expositie ruimte en als ruimte voor muziek voorstellingen. Vooral de gedeelten die niet in gebruik zijn als kerk geven door de openheid een goede indruk van de kerk zoals hij er vroeger heeft uitgezien. See more..

Aan de prachtige ring in Dreischor treft u op nr. 2 het voormalige ‘plaetsenhuys’, raadhuisje dat werd gebouwd in 1637. Het devies ‘Doet wel en vreest niemant’ wordt rechts (boven de deur) geflankeerd door het wapen van Jan Stavenisse.
Dit wapen, dat symbolisch water voorstelt vergezeld van turven, duidt op het beroep van de stamvader, die voor 1400 bij Beldert fortuin maakte met de selnering (zoutwinning). Het wapen links was wellicht van de secretaris. In het midden van de gevel ziet u links het wapen van Zeeland, rechts het wapen van Dreischor en in het midden vrouwe Justitia.
Boven het zolderraampje hangt de bel, die op zondagmorgen na de kerkdienst werd geluid, om de bevolking bijeen te roepen, om de afkondiging van huwelijk of verkoping aan te horen. Naast het poortje hangt de standaard-el, waaraan de plaatselijke lengtematen werden geijkt. Je zal er maar wonen in dit zeer mooie maar oud raadhuisje See more..

Fraaie kerk uit het begin van de 15e eeuw, vernoemd naar de patroonheilige Sint Odulphus. In de periode 1450-1500 kwamen er een driebeukig schip. De bouwvallige losstaande toren werd gesloopt in 1821 en in 1824 werd ter vervanging een kleine klokkentoren op het kerkdak geplaatst. In 1887 werd een nieuwe 51 meter hoge neogotische toren gebouwd. A simpler church than many but welcoming inside and not as dark as some we visited in Belgium. We go in many churches so while this one was not spectacular it was still interesting to visit. See more..
