Amazing view and nice legend

The stumb tower in Koudekerke is linked to a legend. The tower is the only remaining building from the town. The inhabitants caught a mermaid and let her die. Her husband cursed the town in response. So a storm destroyed it all and left only the tower...

    Great views and history
A visit to the Plompetoren is a real must when you visit Schouwen. Entry is free, and from the top one gets excellent views over a varied landscape where land and water alternate, The tower is one of the few tangible remains of the many villages in Zeeland that were lost to the sea. Inside the tower, the legend of the mermaid is told, which led to the loss of the villages of Koudekerke and Westenschouwen. There is also information about the creatures living in these waters. When I visited, an enthusiastic volunteer from Nature Monuments was explaining a lot about the wildlife.

    Great views for free
The recently fully restored this tower so it is safe to visit. It has the history of the "waternoodsramp" of 1953 where a big part of the Zeeland province was flooded and a lot of people lost there lifes. From the top you have a great 360 degree view of the surroundings of Burg-Haamstede. When the weather is good and it is low water you can see the seals on the sand plates.
