Dutch hero

Great (and feared) Dutch admiral. The statue is located on the Boulevard of Vlissingen/Flushing and from there you have a beautiful view on the city and the harbor. Nice place for a moment of rest.

    Dutch famous son
Part of Muzeeum, the nautical historic museum, are the defend works in the fortress beneath this statue from centuries before Napoleon occupied it. And Michiel de Ruiter is the greatest sailor and admiral, the Netherlands ever knew.

Feared by Spanish, English and French navies
Beyond doubt Flushing's most famous or notorious son, admiral de Ruyter started his career working for the Lampsins brothers, during the 17th century Zeeland's most wealthy merchants (over 300 commercial vessels). During this period he started operating as a privateer (legitimatized form of piracy) and got his name de Ruyter (the raider). Eventually he climbed the ranks of the Dutch navy fighting the Spanish, English and French. Perhaps his best known victory was his operation to break the barrier chain at Chatham in 1667. Most Dutch had to learn about it, during history classes. Wish the authorities would find a solution for avoiding white excrements of seagulls on top of the head of de Ruyter. In case of Christian saints the problem is solved with a halo, but that would be to much honor. Perhaps an invisible needle would do the trick...
