- 4.0 Ampera Bridge (830 reviews)
-Historic and Iconic
Bridges
It might not be as grand as the Golden Gate in San Francisco, but AMPERA holds the historical value to the locals. You may walk across it or like me, my local friend took me on a motorcycle ride. For now, motorcycle may stop on the bridge for your photo session etc. The scenery at night is way better than the day. See more..
- 3.5 Maimun Palace (765 reviews)
-Iconic Malay Kingdom
Points of Interest & Landmarks
I'm really proud of Maimun Palace. It's an icon to Medan. The palace itself is really beautiful with its bright yellow ornaments. The palace has a mix of european and arabian architeture. I love the exterior as much as I love the interior. With IDR 10.000 or less than USD 1, you can feel the royal atmosphere. They rent out malay traditional outfit inside the palace. I don't really like the idea of having stores inside the palace. But yeah, you can try it and take some pictures as prince or princess. Last but not least, we need more gallery to read about the history of Sultan, the kingdom and the legends. There's not much to read. See more..
- 4.5 Tanjung Tinggi Beach (764 reviews)
-Avoid the weekend if you are a Western Woman
Monday: 12:00 AM - 11:59 PM Beaches
We have visited this beach a few times. Through the week it is quiet but weekends are local family gathering times.Beaides being crowded and having loads of big blow up seams and boats on the beach , If you are western woman and used to wearing a swimming costume ( mine is one piece and not high cut) you will be stared at , especially by the men ( I am also in my 50s !). All the local women wear Islamic dress to swim in also. In addition there is rubbish. There is a beach around the corner where we had a picnic with our local friends and it is littered with rubbish. The locals don't seem to mind and drop rubbish everywhere. Western tourists will stop coming when the rubbish gets worse and starts to float in the beautiful clear waters of this beach. A sad inevitability as locals don't see the ramifications of fouling their own nest. See more..
- 4.5 Lengkuas Island (668 reviews)
-Another checklist ticked!!
Spent 2-3 hours Islands
Lengkuas Island located in the waters of the Belitung Island, and is about 30 minutes away by boat from Tanjung Kelayang beach or Tanjung Binga in District Sijuk, Belitung. In Lengkuas Island there is Lighthouse, built by Dutch colonial in 1882 and still actively working for marine navigation. Visitors must wash feet with fresh water before entering the lighthouse buildings constructed of steel, because the sea water can cause rust on the building. From the lighthouse, you can see beauty of the white sandy beaches on the island with giant granite rocks and clear sea water greenish. See more..
- 4.0 Bukittinggi Clock Tower (660 reviews)
-Jam Gadang (Bukittinggi Clock Tower)
Monuments & Statues
Jam Gadang is a city square in the heart of Bukittinggi. A number of restaurants, local stores, local food can be found here. Sianok Valley can be seen from here, the weather was definitely not as hot as Padang, the capital of West Sumatra Province. We came here in the afternoon to enjoy the scenery and take some photos. Since it's Sunday afternoon, it was quite crowded. Families, friends visited this place, sitting around chit-chatting, children running around. We also enjoyed live performance of a group coming from Padang just to entertain the crowds. The crowds got bigger at night to enjoy the live performance. See more..
- 4.0 Tjong A Fie's Mansion (580 reviews)
-What a grand mansion and lifestyle.
Speciality Museums
This interesting attraction opens its doors at 9am and charges a IDR35,000 entrance fee which was well worth it. The building looks old and dilapidated from the outside but very grand and posh on the inside and clearly shows how the very wealthy and super influential lived their lives in the past. The entrance fees cover the services of a guided tour around the mansion and on a busy day they have up to five guides doing the honour of showing the visitors around. The guide we had was very knowledgeable and dedicated about what she's doing. She brought us on a wonderful journey around the mansion showing us the various rooms and sections of the very huge house, upstairs as well as downstairs and at the same time narrating about the owner's lifetime accolades and achievements. This is a definite must-visit when in Medan. See more..
- 4.5 Mount Sibayak (578 reviews)
-Medan tour

Guide was perfect as he spoke fluent English and was very informative very attentive to our needs and would always know what to do to make us enjoy the trip didn’t make us pay extra also and was very transparent about the costs. For 5d4n tour accommodation food hotel and driver included is only 9.3 million rupiah find it hard to beat it for value anywhere else not to mention it’s for two people additional 2 days we hired the driver for extra one million rupiah and it was well worth it as he drove us everywhere and also offered the protection that we needed. -Good guide for hike in the canyon
Canyons
I hired Pentai (+62 853 6361 3494) to be my guide for a half day canyon trek. He was great. He carefully led me through the jungle, up and down the side of the canyon, across the river and then through an agricultural village where stopped to talk to farmer and see an incredible array of produce being grown. As per my request, he also patiently worked with me all day on my Bahasa Indonesia (as I had requested he to). After 5 hours I was exhausted, but in a good way. I think we walked half way to Lake Maninjau before a surrendered. Then we took a bus back to Bukit TInggi. Great day out. See more..

- 4.5 Pahawang Island (328 reviews)
-Great for snorkelling and beach fun
Islands
Get a boat from Ketapang Jetty. There were 4 piers with lots of boats to choose from. Choose from traditional wooden boats which are cheaper but slow paced or higher priced fast fiberglass speed boats. We haggled for a fast speed boat to take us snorkelling and island hopping for half a day at 700K Rupiah. We got it from Pak Yayat at Pier 2. Pahawang is excellent for snorkelling. Just off shore the island the residents built platforms with small food/drink booths. They moored the boats there as bases for snorkelling. You can hop from one platform to another. Fantastic ideas to preserve the corals but unfortunately the inexperienced snorkellers ravaged through some of the patches closer to te beach. Great for an overnight trip as well at some of the local folks' homestays on the island. See more..
- 3.5 Monument 0 km Indonesia (309 reviews)
-Worth the trek to get here - but be wary of the monkeys
Monuments & Statues
Deep in a national park at the northern tip of Sumatra and Indonesia as a whole, is the country’s self-styled kilometre zero. It’s a panoramic location with a soviet-like monument and a raised walkway through the trees. Be ready though for the male crested macaques who like to charge you - a local told us, only partially in jest, you need to pay a toll of a banana to pass. We didn’t test this, but gracefully backed away and returned to our scooter. See more..
- 4.0 Iboih Beach (292 reviews)
-Pretty
Beaches
Admittedly the beach is pretty, the water crystal clear and there is decent snorkelling to be done. However I did not feel comfortable leaving my bag with my camera in the beach while I was swimming far (because the sea is quite shallow). There some locals around which were a little bit staring at me (my bag?). My advice is to not bring valuable wit you, and enjoy the location which is actually beautiful. There are seafood restaurants nearby where you can have fresh fish for cheap. See more..

Entrance fee can only be paid by cash card from Bank BNI and no other alternative. Near the entrance of the Goa Jepang (Japanese Cave), many tour guides are waiting. They told us that it is better to hire a guide in order to enjoy the whole experience and explore the cave more extensively. We chose to enter the cave ourselves by following the map posted near entrance. It was alright until on one end there is a locked gate where we couldn't pass through to other end of the tunnel. Other visitors told us that with tour guide, we should be able to get through the gate though. See more..
- 4.5 Great Mosque of Palembang (208 reviews)
-Palembang's Grand Mosque
Religious Sites
Indonesian mosques are on very few travellers itineraries, but many of the old ones have a great deal of charm. They show the locals trying to accommodate Islamic liturgical demands within the confines of traditional Indonesian architectural forms. This process resulted in some of the most original and unusual looking mosques outside the Middle East. This mosque, dating from the 1720s, is a particularly fine example of this process. Demonstrating both the piety of the Sultan of Palembang and his burgeoning wealth from trade with Arabs (who didn't want to deal with Dutch infidels), Mesjid Agung, or The Great Mosque, is a beautiful synthesis of Chinese, Javanese and Arabic influences. The restoration from 1987 was very sympathetic and the building has been well-maintained since. See more..

- 4.0 Rubiah Island (195 reviews)
-You have to know/find out where to snorkel.....
Islands
If you take a boat trip here they mostly drop you at the wrong side of the island...cause its cheaper for them, so dont snorkel there, theres nothing to see on the side that faces Iboih. Instead, walk the small cement path across the island to the other side-only takes a few minutes, and theres a small nice sand beach. From the beach swim straight out and start to snorkel to the right - there you have the most beautiful corals in the area. Nothing on Weh comes even close to these corals. Then if you still have energy , walk the small path behind the restaurant and you will find a small pebble stone beach on your right....start snorkelling from there...to the left....and eventually you will end up at the tip of the island and thats where you have the turtles. Lots of things to see on this side of the island. See more..
- 4.0 Panjang Beach (191 reviews)
-Beach Pantai Panjang
Beaches
Sitting outside my desk of restaurant at Bengkulu Indah Mall , watching the sun set over the horizon. The exquisite colour's starting to fade out as darkness ascends. House lights from every direction turning on . As I look to the left I can see the city lights around Bengkulu Indah Mall (BIM) Pantai Panjang. Transforming the city from its usual hustle and bustle of the day. In the distance I can hear a dog barking, and a faint child's laughter. Taking another sip of my coffee, I hear the shoes coming . Nearly tripping over my hammock, I saw to the right to my friend standing outside.with a pack of Gudang Garam surya , politely taking one. The beach is..long,clean and full of street vendors. - 4.0 Elephant Camp (188 reviews)
-Amazing Experience
Nature & Wildlife Areas
We took a 2 hour ride on bumpy roads from Bukit Lawang to geht to Tangkahan. We booked the washing and riding directly at the ticket office of Tangkahan and when we arrived everything was well organized. First we went to the river with about 8 Elefants and 6 other people to let them take a bath and wash them. It was a great experience being so close to those animals. During the wash you can talk to the guides and ask them about their work, they don't speak the best of english but try their best to explain everything. After the washing you can hand feed the elephants and take pictures with them. Afterwards we went on a 1 hour jungle trek which was also a great experience. The guides only command the elephants by words, if you stay long enough you can also learn to comunicate with the elephants. This was one of the best experiences I ever had, friendly people, amazing animals, a once in a lifetime experience! Do not miss it, it is worth every bump in the road. See more..

-It gives you the scale of the 2004 tsunami
Spent 1-2 hours Points of Interest & Landmarks

The site was almost close in one afternoon when I visited here, but since she was there, she companied my around the complex and visited the photographs of the site when it happened. They arranged the photograph on the second floor of the house in a way that it gives you the scale of how big the tsunami was. She told me and my friends the first hand story about the tragedy and how she and other 51 people survived after climbing up to this boat when the boat landed on the top of her house after being thrown here and there by the tsunami. I suggest you find her and ask her to tell the story when you visit this site. See more..
