Clean Water

Lengkuas Island located in the waters of the Belitung Island, and is about 30 minutes away by boat from Tanjung Kelayang beach or Tanjung Binga in District Sijuk, Belitung. In Lengkuas Island there is Lighthouse, built by Dutch colonial in 1882 and still actively working for marine navigation. Visitors must wash feet with fresh water before entering the lighthouse buildings constructed of steel, because the sea water can cause rust on the building. From the lighthouse, you can see beauty of the white sandy beaches on the island with giant granite rocks and clear sea water greenish.

Beautiful scenery, but try to avoid the crowds
As part of our island hopping trip, we stopped at Lengkuas Beach to climb the lighthouse and to snorkel. The first thing which struck us was the huge numbers of people there. It's a small island and only a part of it is accessible. So, when dozens of boats arrive at the same time bringing large groups of people, it ends up being very crowded. It appeared that most people were interested in taking large group photos on the beach. We were hoping for a nice get away to a secluded island. Nevertheless, we did appreciate the beauty. The lighthouse climb is a good workout, but the view is worth it. After having a light snack of noodles, our boat crew took us out to the snorkeling spot just off the island. That was initially a disappointment for us. There was a row of boats tied up with large numbers of people wearing their life vests floating around, and standing on and kicking coral. We saw a lot of crushed coral which had clearly been trampled by previous visitors. We swam a long way from the boats and found a place with still beautiful intact coral and lots of fish. Lengkuas Beach is a nice place, but there will be little to attract people to the area if someone does not figure out how to keep the coral safe. I would recommend that visitors arrange to go very early in the morning to Lengkuas Beach or later in the day. It appeared that many/most of the boats were on the same basic schedule going from island to island.
