Aceh Tsunami Museum, Sumatra, Indonesia
4.0 (554 reviews) Spent Ranking #3 in Sumatra Speciality Museums
Free, Informative, Friendly and Safe
Great attraction for Banda Aceh. Not only is it completely Free (free parking, free admission, free movie inside) but it is informative, educational, emotional considering the tales of destruction inside and also Safe. It is Safe because it is a giant three story building made of concrete (Three high ceiling floors, so equivellant of six stories) and thus it is also a tsunami shelter for the people should another disaster happen in this Earthquake zone of the world. Very impressed.

Still worth a look, but won't take long
This is a museum designed as a symbolic reminder of the 2004 Indian Ocean earthquake and tsunami disaster, as well as an educational center and an emergency disaster shelter in case the area is ever hit by a tsunami again. The building was awesome in design but went you walk in it was rundown and not well maintain. The building has a very unique architecture. It provides all history about Tsunami Aceh 2004. Sadly the museum does not do justice to the weight and the severity of the tragic event. I feel it could have done more to show the devastating effect of the tsunami. The displays aren't too exciting. It is an experience easily forgotten. But of course the significance of the ordeal should not be undermined. Inside we can watch audiovisual that plays the footage of the tsunami in Aceh. There is a part of the room in that building which is contain of name of people who died in that tragedy. Some of the exhibits were not ready (not even put up), and of those that were there, many of them were not in working condition. There were however a couple of exhibits which captured quite well the stark emotion of the aftermath. Entrance fee is also really cheap. Its open daily from 9:00 am to 4:00 pm. Overall, it was a nice and informative experience.
