Monument 0 km Indonesia, Sumatra, Indonesia

Worth the trek to get here - but be wary of the monkeys

Deep in a national park at the northern tip of Sumatra and Indonesia as a whole, is the country’s self-styled kilometre zero. It’s a panoramic location with a soviet-like monument and a raised walkway through the trees. Be ready though for the male crested macaques who like to charge you - a local told us, only partially in jest, you need to pay a toll of a banana to pass. We didn’t test this, but gracefully backed away and returned to our scooter.

Chasing sunset to the 0 kilometer of Indonesia!
Well, I enjoy the sunset. The monument itself is pretty big, you can go up to the second and third floor of the monument to have better view. Not much to do exept enjoying the sunset. For me, the location is pretty far from the city.

    Interesting, at least
The monument is a bit run-down, but this is an interesting spot if you are into geography or Indonesian history, I guess. If you walk or bike in, watch out for a group of agressive monkeys at the entrance. Probably best to drive in or take a scooter, actually. There are a few little souvenir shops and restaurants, but don't expect them to be open until the late morning.
