Rubiah Island, Sumatra, Indonesia

4.0 (195 reviews) Spent Ranking #4 in Aceh Islands

You have to know/find out where to snorkel.....

If you take a boat trip here they mostly drop you at the wrong side of the island...cause its cheaper for them, so dont snorkel there, theres nothing to see on the side that faces Iboih. Instead, walk the small cement path across the island to the other side-only takes a few minutes, and theres a small nice sand beach. From the beach swim straight out and start to snorkel to the right - there you have the most beautiful corals in the area. Nothing on Weh comes even close to these corals. Then if you still have energy , walk the small path behind the restaurant and you will find a small pebble stone beach on your right....start snorkelling from there...to the left....and eventually you will end up at the tip of the island and thats where you have the turtles. Lots of things to see on this side of the island.

    so many dolphins
Weh Island is located at the northen most part of Sumatara Island. We flew for 2 hrs from Kuala Lumpur to Bandar Acheh. We can visit the Tsunami Museum of Acheh, a very beautiful monumental building constructed from donations of many coutries to commemorate the great disaster in year 2004 where over 170,000 people perished. Another place of attarction related to the Tsunami is the PLTD Apung. This 2,600 tonne ship was pushed 5km inland and it is since stays there and serves as a toursit attarctions. We took a ferry from bandar Aheh to Weh Island and it took about 2-3 hrs. We stay at the coast of Weh island at Sabang Bay facing Rubiah Island. There are many resorts here, catering to scuba and snorkeling activities. Even just at the jetty at this area, we can see squids, sea horses, octopus and eels. This is a nice place for scuba diving with very clear visibility, but I find the biggest attarction here is the many dolphins that we can see by taking a boat just outside the bay. We rented a boat out, and just 20 minutes in the journey, we see so many dolphins swimming next to our baot, in front of our boat and everywhere. They frequently jump up from the sea and dive in again. You dont have to try so hard to search for few dolphins as compared to many other places. The view of so many dolphins is simply marvellous and this attraction is definitely under advertised. We can also rent a motorbike to roam around the island. There is a Zero km monument at the northern tip of the island, and also we see so many bats flying around during day time.

    Changed a lot!
I swam here to that island (round 15-20 minutes-for a average swimmer no problem) in 1996 the first time. I've done it 30 times and never took a boat. At this time there were almost no boats in the channel. Now its full. The marinelive was extraordenary fantastic 20 years ago. Naturell beautyness uninfected. Manta, turtles, sharks were to be seen. But first the Tsunami on boxingday 2004 destroyed a lot and than the 2010 coralbleaching killed the rest of it. don't expect to many healthy corals. Now on some weekends you have up to thousand Indonesian weekenders and they don't care about the last corals nor about the environment-rubbish! Don't expect any big fish near Rubiah anymore! avoid weekends!
