Second only to Berlin in size and population, the city of Hamburg is home to one of the biggest harbors in Europe. A stroll along its many waterways and canals illustrates why it has been called the "Venice of the North." Don't miss a trip to the local fish market (Fischmarkt), the Merchants District (marked by its imposing red-brick architecture), a fine dining experience along the river or a night out in the university quarter. And did we mention the Reeperbahn (red light district)? It's quite famous for its… red lights.

  5. 4.5 Port of Hamburg (7.297 reviews)
    - Use the Ferries for a great Trip
    Bodies of Water
    Port of Hamburg image
The port is the heart of Hamburg with so much to see and do. If you’re tempted onto the water don’t pay for a cruise round the harbour when you can do much of the same by taking one or two ferries for far less. The star trip was on #73.This was great and went in amongst narrow waterways, past old buildings that would have hummed in the port’s heyday. #62 was pretty good too. See more..

    Hamburg Town Hall image
We were really thankful for the opportunity to take an English tour. We simply had to show proof of vaccination and wear a mask during the tour. The interior of the building is amazing for a government office. Each room is decorated in a different way and many of the doors and wall coverings are very intricate. The tour guide provided a great sense of the history of Hamburg and the use of the building, as well as information concerning the art works and interior decorations. See more..

St. Nikolai Memorial is Hamburg’s most important memorial dealing with the war and its dictatorship during 1933-1945. The original main church was destroyed in the air raids on Hamburg in 1943. In the church ruins a museum reminds us of the disastrous air war over Europe. It questions the impact of war in former as well as in present times and deals with aspects of the memories of the victims of World War II. A glass elevator takes visitors up the fifth highest church tower in the world. A viewing platform at 76 metres overlooks the harbour, the Alster lakes and Hamburg’s city centre. Historical photos of past destruction add up to the impressions. Our program offers discussions in current events, supports research on German history and promotes international peace movements/ peace and understanding of nations. See more..

    Chilehaus image
a magnificent and unique architecture, not in vain elevated to world cultural heritage. You have to walk around this building to see this dimension and art (you can't do that from the harbour tour). Also the interior view (the courtyards, and the few staircases you can look at) is valuable. It is hard to imagine that there was an ensemble of some of these houses. If you love architecture, you have to go here. See more..

There are so many things to see and do in Hamburg, but if you are here on a longer stay or have a particular interest in cemeteries, or the unusual, you must see this one. There is nothing like it that compares anywhere in the world. More a like a park, maintained to perfection, so large it has bus stops inside, there is an S Bahn stop directly in front of the main gate. If you have a rental car, take a drive in, stop and stroll around. During opening hours, there is no gate or required stop when you enter by car or foot. If you have family roots in Hamburg, chances are you have family buried at this site. See more..
