The Völklinger Hütte World Heritage Site was the first monument from the zenith of the industrial era to be included on the UNESCO World Heritage list. The sensational announcement was made on 17 December 1994 in Phuket, Thailand: for the first time, a place associated with industry and work was to join the ranks of World Cultural Heritage Sites. Up to then, the list had been reserved for cathedrals, old towns and palaces. Today, the Völklinger Hütte World Heritage Site is not just the world’s only fully intact ironworks from the industrial era; it is also a unique location for international exhibitions, festivals and concerts. And it is a place where culture and nature meet: The Paradise, located in what was once the “hell” of the coking plant, is a fascinating garden where diverse flora and fauna have recaptured parts of the former industrial facility. GONDWANA - Das Praehistorium image
This museum did not disappoint my two young boys. We got the family pass, which allowed entry for 2 adults and 3 children. There museum is broken up into two sections. The first shows the evolution of the earth and life from the first single-cell organisms to the time of mammals. This section included information on the shifting continents, which was really cool if you’re into geology. There were several short videos and animatronics along the way to provide variety for short attention spans. The second half walks back in time, detailing the evolution of human life. All exhibit explanations can be translated with a digital app into English and French. There is also a cafe serving food and drinks (including beer and wine). Highly recommended! See more..

    - Beautiful
    Wednesday: 11:00 AM - 5:00 PM Spent < 1 hour Points of Interest & Landmarks • Churches & Cathedrals
Ludwigskirche - Evangelische Kirchengemeinde Alt-Saarbrucken image
The "Ludwigskirche" in Saarbruecken is a lutheran (protestant) church, built in 1775 by prince Ludwig of Nassau. It is one of the most important and prominent baroque churches in Germany, impressively situated amidst a place and surrounded by baroque city palaces. The church features a stunning white interior and a pulpit and organ in its centre. The church is open every Tuesday to Sunday from 11 a.m. until 5 p.m. Groups are asked to arrange their visit through the congregational office. See more..

We love this lake. Something for everyone. We like to rent bikes at Centre Parc to ride around the lake. Kids enjoyed Bosiland to get all their energy out. Also fun to use all the options offered at Centre Parc, so much to do. There are two beaches, we like the larger one near Bosiland. Lots of food options and a slide, also safes to place your valuables in. See more..

    Saarläendisches Staatstheater image
If you are in Saarbruecken and are interested in are in the mood for traditional theater you should definitely visit the Staatstheater. The old building is a sight for sorrow eyes even without being visiting one of the many cultural offers it provides. Operas, ballet or just theater I have almost never been disappointed. If you are looking for classical theater look no further than here. However if you are looking for bold and unconventional rather than classic, visit "Die alte Feuerwache" in the heart of the city. 13. 4.5 Römische Villa Nennig (41 reviews)
    - Was hear during the Roman Festival
Spent 1-2 hours Points of Interest & Landmarks
    Römische Villa Nennig image
Though there is not much built up here, if you use your imagination you can almost see and feel the 6th Roman Legion camping out and protecting Trier from the Germanic and later Frank tribes, though historically they vacated the area and it was reclaimed by the Franks, it is quite a site to be seated in something that existed almost 1700 years ago. I mean 1700 years and we get a glimpse into what was...amazing. I recommend planning on being there during the Roman festival which I believe it was July, but check the interwebs. See more..

  15. 4.5 Volklingen steelworks (33 reviews)
    - Visit!! With your coat :)
    Speciality Museums
    Volklingen steelworks image
The place is (one of the?) first sites from the industrial revolution to be added to the Unesco world heritage sites. And rightly so. The complexity of the edifice is kind bending. At a time before any computers were doing any real job, a massive structure of engineering genius was full blown. And a super music video exhibition alongside everything else. Visit - absolutely!- but don't forget your helmet (or coat, it's mostly outdoors) See more..
  16. 4.5 Litermont-Gipfeltour (31 reviews)
    - Great long walk with friends and dogs
    Hiking Trails
    Litermont-Gipfeltour image
This is a lovely 10km walk through the forest to the top of the hill where there is a nice scenic view. You can take short cuts through the trail as well if you're not up for the full 4 hour walk. They also have different difficulty levels going up certain parts so it can be more or less challenging. We brought our dogs with us, and they LOVED it! They're allowed off leash as long as you're not crossing paths with other hikers. See more..

    Benediktinerabtei St. Mauritius Tholey image
Recommended by fellow Brit from campsite (Bostalsee Camping Plarz) was certainly worth a visit especially if churches Munsters are your 'thing' they are not always mine , there has only ever been one other place that has moved me and given a vibe that reduces me to tears and that is Durham Cathedral, like there a presence of the past can be felt there, it's simple with very modern glass stained Windows that do not detract from the ambiance of its history. Whilst visiting the organist was playing a haunting piece, I almost expect to see a choir of monks very atmospheric. Pleasant gardens too. ⛪️ See more..

  21. 4.5 Hunnenring der keltische Ringwall (19 reviews)
    - Lovely walk, views, celtic history...
Spent 1-2 hours Historic Sites • Ancient Ruins • Points of Interest & Landmarks
    Hunnenring der keltische Ringwall image
We were staying at the nearby Centerparcs and came out to see this one evening. A Celtic structure from 100 bc. It is completely free of charge to visit this, you park at the bottom and there are several public footpaths to get to the top, some gently uphill, some steeper and there are also information boards dotted around the site with interesting facts, in English, about this Celtic ring wall. This was a lovely walk through the forest, we saw several deer, and some great views at the top. There is a reconstruction celtic village near the car park, this charges an entrance fee but it has limited opening hours. We were impressed and enjoyed our walk so much we came back again with our two teens. See more..
  22. 4.5 Römermuseum Schwarzenacker (19 reviews)
    - Wonderful museum
    Spent 1-2 hours Speciality Museums
    Römermuseum Schwarzenacker image
This museum consists of two parts: a museum with exhibitions and a place where they found ruins of a settlement and re-built some buildings to show how this settlement used to look like. One gets a really good impression on how it looked like back then. It is impressive to see what the Romans already had to make life more comfortable. Certainly a good weather thing to do. See more..

Best place for walking, jogging, biking and watching birds. My husband and I had a wonderful time walking and watching ducks and geese of different kind nods. The water fountains played with accompanying music and was great. The place has multiple cafes and clean toilets. Entrance is free and you can reach the place by public transportation e.g Bus 126. 25. 4.0 Saarbrücken Old Town (321 reviews)
    - French fragrance in a beautiful city
    Neighborhoods
    Saarbrücken Old Town image
To tell the truth: many times I've past over Saarbrucken to visit 'so called' attractive destinations. Two weeks ago, driving toward Metz, I've decided to give Saarbrucken a 'grace' of an hour...and let me tell that I've spent there almost a whole day. The town is devided by the Saar river, and the two parts deserve an intensive visit, by feet, of course. St. Johann district includes the St. Johann church, the town hall, various museums and the main shopping streets. On the left bank of the Saar lies the older part of the town, which includes two main popular attractions: the castle with the impressive square and Ludwigskirche, the picturesque baroque church. Learn a lesson: don't pass over Saarbrucken. You won't regret it. See more..
  26. 4.0 Europa Galerie (226 reviews)
    - Beutiful mall in a centre of the city
    Shopping Malls
    Europa Galerie image
This is a beautifully restored building which was has retained it’s historical charm. My local friend tells me it was a former post office, or other government building and that the agreement was to retain as much as possible the historical architecture as possible during reconstruction, and they did. The mall has its typical chain stores and all are tastefully done. It’s located right downtown so access is easy via public transit or walking. I’m not one for malls but this one is special. 27. 4.0 Saarbrucker Zoo (213 reviews)
    - Good with small children
Wednesday: 8:30 AM - 6:00 PM Spent 2-3 hours Zoos
    Saarbrucker Zoo image
It’s a nice zoo for small children with a lot of different animals: Pinguin, Kangaroo, Gorilla, Giraffe…. But it is still a zoo with small space for the animals. There is a nice playground also and it is possible to eat See more..
  28. 4.0 Schlossberghohlen Homburg (108 reviews)
    - One of the hidden gems in Saarland
    Historic Sites
    Schlossberghohlen Homburg image
Homburg mines are one of those hidden gems in Saarland region. They are the biggest sandstone caves/mines made by men in Europe. They are little bit hidden, I recommend to park on parking 1 or 2 (for free) next to the ruins of the castle, the mines are located closeby. If you want English guided tour, you need to let them know in advance. Otherwise they give you the map, flyer, safety instruction and you will go explore by yourself, which was completely ok for us. The admission was 5€/adult. It was a nice experience. See more..
  29. 4.0 Neunkircher Zoologischer Garten (89 reviews)
    - Great medium sized zoo
    Wednesday: 8:30 AM - 5:00 PM Zoos
    Neunkircher Zoologischer Garten image
I took my toddler to the zoo and we both had a blast. Our favorite part was the falcon show and the bald eagle flew just inches above my head. Almost all of the animals looked healthy (minus one monkey that was missing all of its fur). We had a stroller which was hard to push around some of the steeper parts, but still doable. I had the falcon burger at the kiosk near the falcon show and elephants and it was really good. One of the best burgers I have had in Germany. There was plenty of free parking outside of the zoo and the staff spoke English which was very helpful. I highly recommend this zoo! See more..
  30. 4.0 Roemische Villa Borg (87 reviews)
    - neatly kept museum. If you're there, have a look!
Wednesday: 11:00 AM - 4:00 PM Speciality Museums
    Roemische Villa Borg image
gigantic roman villa, good museum but not that many artefacts, it is popular but one expected a bit more historical information. The food in the roman museum is fantastic, apparently using traditional roman recepies. For disabled people or elderly, you're up for a walk of about 500m from the parking to the actual museum. See more..
