    - Christmas Market
    Points of Interest & Landmarks
    Marktplatz image
Visited Marktplatz in December and got to see one of the best contemporary Christmas markets in Germany. The central square was beautifully decorated with the imposing town hall and Church looming over at either ends. Do try out 'Feuerzangenbowle' which is the local drink and it gives you the much needed warmth on a cold winter night. You can't miss the shop as its the most crowded one you will find ;) A short walk from Marktplatz will also take you to the river front and the medieval Christmas market which is equally thrilling but a completely different experience. Our guide was very knowledgeable and demonstrated a love for his profession and the Rathaus. You'll certainly learn a lot. You can pay for the guided tour by going to Tourist-Information Böttcherstraße 4. The tour lasts about one hour and is given several times a day. Tour costs 7 Euro and is offered in English or German. Highly recommended. See more..

  13. 4.5 Der Bremer Roland (347 reviews)
    - Town privileges sign
    Spent < 1 hour Monuments & Statues
    Der Bremer Roland image
Roland statues are typical for northen and eastern Germany. In middle age it was a sign of town privileges, nowadays it is a prove of a long history of the city. Bremer Roland is more richly decorated than other Rolands I have seen so far and unlike in other towns it stands in open space. It is definitelly worth to see. Unfortunately it seems to be favorite spot for tourists guides to stop and tell there long stories so there is always bunch of people around the statue. See more..
  14. 4.5 U-Boot Wilhelm Bauer (332 reviews)
    - One of the best submarines to visit
    Ships
    U-Boot Wilhelm Bauer image
This is in fantastic condition. It’s a self guided tour at your own speed. Cost is 3.50 euros. Tickets are on sale at the front of the sub where there is a small gift shop. The lady behind the counter is very helpful and speaks good English as my German is very poor. Wouldn’t recommend if you don’t like small spaces or struggle getting through the hatches. But if you can it’s well worth a visit. Take your time to read the information as it is very fascinating to realise how many crew were on the sub during operation. As there are only about 4 surviving u boats from ww2 this is the best. See more..
  15. 4.5 Viewing Platform SAIL City (303 reviews)
    - Top View on a Good Day
Tuesday: 10:00 AM - 5:00 PM Observation Decks & Towers
    Viewing Platform SAIL City image
There are no entry personel , you buy your ticker from a machine inside the door. The entrance is not connected to the hotel you have to go round the side. You then have to wait for the lift, which in Covid times, means the queue can stretch to the outside, as only two people (unless from same household) can use the lift at the same time. There are no alternative stairs. The lift journey is limited to the entry and exit floors , so fairly quick. Once you are up , there are markungs and a one-way system which are not difficult to follow. The view is fabulous., you see the Weser estuary spread out on one side, you finally understand how big the harbour is, and how water dominates the living /office spaces aound here. There are explainatory tables of landmarks. We were glad we took the time to get this view. See more..

The German Maritime Museum / Leibniz Institute for Maritime History (DSM) in Bremerhaven has set itself the task of exploring the relationship between man and sea and making it possible to experience it in exhibitions. It is one of eight Leibniz research museums in Germany. With more than 80 employees and trainees and around 8000 square metres of covered exhibition space, it is one of the largest maritime museums in Europe. The DSM is currently in a state of flux and combines a building renovation and the construction of a research depot with a comprehensive new concept for all exhibition and research areas. During this phase, which lasts until 2021, the building will remain open - with a varied programme, changing special exhibitions and events. The more than 600-year-old Bremer Kogge and the museum ships in the outdoor area can also continue to be visited. See more..
  20. 4.5 Kunsthalle Bremen (204 reviews)
    - Well worth a visit
Tuesday: 10:00 AM - 9:00 PM Art Museums
    Kunsthalle Bremen image
Kunsthalle Bremen Only a few minutes away from the market place is the Kunsthalle Bremen. Over the course of its 180 year history, it has developed into a museum with an international reputation. In 1823, 34 art-loving citizens established the Kunstverein Bremen [Bremen Arts Society] which still runs the institution as a private supporting organisation today, sponsored by regular subsidies from the Bremen municipality. The collection of paintings centres on French and German art of the nineteenth and twentieth century. Along with other European works of the fifteenth and nineteenth century, they fill the gallery on the upper floor. Special highlights are the many paintings by Paula Modersohn-Becker, Max Beckmann, Lovis Corinth, Max Liebermann, and Eugène Delacroix. The Department of Prints and Drawings holds about 200,000 sheets, including hand drawings, aquarelles, and printed graphs of the fifteenth to twentieth century, and is thus one of the major institutions of its kind in Europe. Sculptures, including ones by Auguste Rodin, are presented in the Large Gallery on the ground floor. On the top floor an exclusive artwork by John Cage is exhibited. See more..
  21. 4.5 Museen Boettcherstrasse (191 reviews)
    - Don't Miss This
    Art Museums
    Museen Boettcherstrasse image
It was constructed in the mid-1920s and chimes/plays music on a certain schedule throughout the day. There are easily one dozen panels that are displayed throughout the cycle of operation. It's always crowded to see this so get there early enough to get a good place to see it--the panels change on the upper left of the building. It takes about 15 minutes for the full cycle. The street is uneven cobblestones so careful walking. See more..

    U-Boot Bunker Valentin image
An interesting piece of history, displaying the scale and magnitude of how an idea can influence the lives of thousands of people. The bunker itself is massive, a real concrete monster I’ve never seen before. The addmission is free of charge, and there’s a free parking area. The tour areas are nice and tidy and there’s also a possibility to use audio guide feature for free. A place surely worth a visit if you find yourself in the area. See more..
  23. 4.5 Bremer Geschichtenhaus (143 reviews)
    - A real treat - interesting way to learn about the city state
Tuesday: 1:00 PM - 5:00 PM History Museums
    Bremer Geschichtenhaus image
We were recommended the Geschichtenhaus by the tourist information office in Bremen. It is a large old building which has been turned into a series of stage sets where different people - all in appropriate costume - tell stories of different episodes in the life of the city, giving a clear vision of how a town developed into a cosmopolitan free state. In order to make the most of a visit here, some understanding of German is necessary as all the accounts were in German - and some were tricky to understand because of dialect. Highly recommended! See more..

  26. 4.5 Glockenspiel House (101 reviews)
    - Nice to see
    Points of Interest & Landmarks
    Glockenspiel House image
This little carillon is nothing spectacular but nice to see. I had a good luck that I arrived to this place when bells were chiming just by coincidence otherwise I could miss it as in the period from January till March they only chime 3 times a day (rest of the year every hour). I visited Bremen at the begining of March wenn traveling was obviously already affected by Corona yet the place was packed. I think it might be useful to plan visit in advance and come a bit earlier to be able to see the spectacle in the time of normal tourists traffic. See more..
  27. 4.5 Botanika (94 reviews)
    - "Wonderful journey in between flowers from around the world"
Nature & Wildlife Areas • Gardens
    Botanika image
Lovely botanical garden located in the middle of the rhododendron park. It is especially worth doing the visit if you come to the park at a time where there are no flowers outside. Note that the entry price is a little expensive (10 euros). Lovely bonus: tea offered during the visit, makes the trip even more magical! See more..
  28. 4.5 Historisches Museum Bremerhaven (60 reviews)
    - Family History Lesson!
Tuesday: 10:00 AM - 6:00 PM History Museums
    Historisches Museum Bremerhaven image
Let me start off by saying that this place is very special to me because of my family history so I may be biased. My dad worked out of this very port from a ship called "The Seven Seas." He was a steward on the ship. My family immigrated to the US on that same ship from the same port. (They were from Bremerhaven) Very interesting museum. Head phones came in many languages. They did a very good job trying to create the feel of a passage. Highly recommend for history buffs! See more..

  30. 4.5 Bremer Freimarkt (47 reviews)
    - Bremen Freimarkt
    Cultural Events
    Bremer Freimarkt image
For 17 days every October, about 4 million revelers arrive at Bremer Freimarkt to ride ferris wheels, roller coasters, and ghost trains and feed on fried dough, spicy liquorice, and smoked eel. One of the oldest fairs in Germany, the event first took place in 1035. Of course, it's changed a great deal over that time, with blacksmiths, jugglers, and storytellers giving way to fireworks, cotton candy, and a parade of creatively and colorfully decorated floats. The modern version of Freimarkt runs with delirious energy, as merrymakers sway to rock bands in tents and zip among more than 300 attractions on the neon-lit fairscape. See more..
