- 4.5 Altstadt (974 reviews)
-Charming town popular with German tourists.
Historic Walking Areas
We arrived here about 10 days after Germany allowed hotels to reopen. Our hotel was packed. As we traveled through Thuringia we came across almost no foreign tourists, but noticed some towns are very popular with Germans. This is one. We arrived on Sunday afternoon and were surprised at the large number of tourists and open cafes. The altstadt is quite extensive and charming. Monday evening seemed much quieter. We started by walking up the steps to the castle garden and view of the town. It was after 4 and the castle was closed but we were able to walk through. The next day we noticed that the path to the castle was blocked. We never went in to any of the churches or museums, just wandered the town, and read all of the Ferienwohnungen adverts. Our second day there we drove to Thale and did the hike along the Bode river--starting at Treseburg. See more..
- 4.5 Wernigerode Castle (896 reviews)
-Simple castle
Castles
Of course it is a highlight of Wernigerode which you must visit. I did everything on foot but there is the little train which you can take to go up, I think it costs 4 euro. The entrance ticket costs 7 euro and the interior might be not very big but there are some interesting rooms which cannot be photographed. For example, a very large dining room. You must visit the garden for beautiful flowers and views. This is free. My tip is the viewing point of Agnesberg. It is a short hike in the forest and then you have a cool view of the castle from far. See more..
- 4.5 Gruene Zitadelle (546 reviews)
-Must have for anyone visiting Magdeburg!
Tuesday: 12:00 AM - 11:59 PM Spent 2-3 hours Points of Interest & Landmarks • Architectural Buildings
Welcome to the Green Citadel - Friedensreich Hundertwassers’ “oasis for humanity and nature in a sea of rational houses”! This stunning location in the heart of Magdeburg, the capital city of the state Saxony-Anhalt, Germany. It offers not only individual living spaces but space to experience: attractive shop fronts, function rooms, a hotel, a theatre, offices, medical practices and a kindergarten are all under one very special roof. The tour of the building that includes access to a few select interior spaces provides the visitor with a broad understanding of the architectural ‘causes’ that were so important to the artist and that he integrated across his structures. From the highest tower of the Green Citadel you are going to enjoy the stunning view over Magdeburg! See more..
- 4.5 Magdeburger Dom (466 reviews)
-Recommended
Churches & Cathedrals
A beautiful cathedral. Yes, plainer than many inside, but still beautiful - very detailed sculptures and carvings. Especially liked the 'weeping angels' - left hand side of the cathedral through a door. And don't miss the tombs of Otto the Great and his first wife Edith. Buy a leaflet for the cathedral (1 euro) so you know what you are looking at. Costs 2 euros to take photos but worth it. Then go to the Dommuseum Ottanianum which is next door to find out more. See more..

- 4.5 Lutherhalle/Lutherhaus (353 reviews)
-Martin Luther House and Museum
Religious Sites
My husband and I had an amazing opportunity to visit this historical site. It is said to be the world’s largest museum relating to the Reformation. It contains many original objects from Luther’s life, including his pulpit from Wittenberg’s parish church, a monk’s habit and numerous bibles, pamphlets and manuscripts. According to available information, the Lutherhaus is a writer’s house museum built in 1504 as part of the University of Wittenberg. The building was the home for most of his adult life and where he wrote his famous 95 Theses. The Augusteum is an expansion to the original building that was built after his death to house a Protestant seminary and library which still exists today. Both buildings are UNESCO World Heritage Sites. Open daily except for Mondays. Tours are available. Don’t miss this historical site. See more..
- 4.5 Harz National Park (352 reviews)
-Thale to Treseburg 3-hour walk
National Parks
Would recommend the walk from Thale to Treseburg about 3 hours. Beautiful scenery - waterfalls, rockpools, tree tops, mountains and valleys and high views. No scrambling and down rocks, easy to follow. The place for a beer at the end in Treseburg is up on the hill as you enter. It was excellent. Food and prices were great. We were tempted to stay for dinner but had other plans. You can catch the bus back from Tresesburg to Thale on the free Harz tourist ticket. All in all a great day. See more..
- 4.5 Bauhaus Dessau Foundation (350 reviews)
-Time to visit the Bauhaus

- 4.5 Gartenreich Dessau-Wörlitz (265 reviews)
-Must see
Historic Sites • Points of Interest & Landmarks • Parks
Amazing large landscape park with plenty to see and explore. On Monday the castles are closed but this way the parc was very quiet, which we enjoyed. Entrance to the park in general is free, only if you want to use the boat to cross the lake there is a small fee. There is a fairly priced parking lot close by. See more..
- 4.5 Naumburg Cathedral UNESCO World Heritage (262 reviews)
-Expensive to visit, but do so anyway
Tuesday: 10:00 AM - 4:00 PM Spent 1-2 hours Architectural Buildings • Religious Sites • Churches & Cathedrals
Welcome to the UNESCO-World Heritage Site of Naumburg Cathedral The Cathedral of St Peter and St Paul in Naumburg is one of Europe’s most important cultural monuments from the high middle ages and is a major visitor attraction on the “Romanesque Route”. One of the cathedral’s most impressive features are the twin choir screens which separate the choirs from the nave. It is the only church in the world to contain two choir screens from the high medieval period! The West Choir with its choir screen and 12 statues depicting the church’s donors, which date back to the mid-thirteenth century, forms the cathedral’s biggest attraction. Crafted by the Naumburg Master, the statue known as Uta is particularly special and is said to depict the “most beautiful woman of the middle ages”. See more..
- 4.5 Stadtkirche (262 reviews)
-Beautiful historic church
Tuesday: 10:00 AM - 4:00 PM Spent < 1 hour Churches & Cathedrals
During a tour of Wittenberg, my husband and I had an opportunity to see the beautiful Church of St. Mary. Although it was closed on this occasion, our local tour guide provided us with its history. We were also able to take great pictures without crowds. Church of St. Mary is also known as the Mother Church of the Reformation. According to available information, it was where Martin Luther often preached, and also the scene of Martin Luther’s wedding to Katharine von Bora. The church is located at the market square with beautiful surroundings. The octagonal twin towers of St. Mary’s soar high above the city center. A wonderful place to visit. See more..
- 4.5 Quedlinburg Schloss (229 reviews)
-Historic Castle
Tuesday: 10:00 AM - 4:00 PM Speciality Museums
Historic old Castle that was really the home of the Abbess who ruled Quedlinburg. Lot's of history from the crowning of the first German King (start of the 1st Reich) and down through the centuries. Good views of Quedlinburg from the walls and a nice museum that told the history of the Schloss beautifully including the ways the 3rd Reich tried to turn it into a cult center. Not as richly decorated as some other castles but well done. See more..

-A must see attraction

We have visited this tower with a group of nine people. The exhibition is really interesting and offers a lot of things to discover. This applies for smaller kids and adults alike. We have booked a guided tour which I would recommend to not miss any highlights. One important advise: the tower is not really heated. So make sure that you have warm cloth on during winter times. I am sure that we will visit the tower again. See more..

-The gem of Merseburg!
Tuesday: 10:00 AM - 4:00 PM Spent 1-2 hours Religious Sites
Welcome to Merseburg Cathedral! The Merseburg Cathedral of St. John and St. Lawrence is today considered one of the most important cathedral buildings in Germany, and 1,000 years ago was the favourite place of the only canonised imperial couple, Henry II and Cunigunde. None other than Bishop Thietmar of Merseburg, one of the most famous chroniclers of the Middle Ages, laid the foundation stone for the construction of the cathedral on 18 May 1015. Emperor Henry II was present at the consecration on 1 October 1021 and bestowed great gifts on the Merseburg church. See more..
- 4.5 Miniaturenpark Kleiner Harz im Bürgerpark Wernigerode (111 reviews)
-Nice place to visit with children
Parks
We visited Wernigerode on a busy day and had great difficulty finding a parking place near the castle or the old centre. Therefore we decided to visit the “Mini Harz” attraction park with 4 adults, two young children and a baby. It turned out to be a good choice. The park contains about 70 miniatures of well known buildings and sites situated in the Harz. The miniatures are meticulously crafted true models of the original buildings and town squares. The attractions are also attractive for children because they can direct the model trains on train tracks or be a crane driver on a building site. The park also offers a cafe, gardens and a plot with small animals. See more..

More than 30 years after the fall of the Berlin Wall, many things from everyday life in the former GDR are being forgotten, the "children after the reunification" have already grown up.
