    Wenshu Yuan Monastery image
Amazing place for a peaceful walk, not touristy like so many other temples. Free entry, just had to show green code. Lots of little buildings and walk ways to go around. You can light a candle in memory, or for reflection. The exit gate leads you to a beautiful pedestrian street with various small restaurants and shops. Lovely place to sit and relax for a while, feels like a bit of an escape! Note - lots of shops selling embroidery - they might not be as 'local' as they make out! See more..
  3. 4.0 Qingyang Palace (Green Ram Temple) (183 reviews)
    - Fun to see a Taoist temple, for a change
Friday: 8:00 AM - 6:00 PM Historic Sites • Religious Sites
Qingyang Palace (Green Ram Temple) image
Most of the temples you're going to see in China, especially in the east of the country, are Buddhist, with a smattering of Confucian. This is one of the very first Taoist temples I've seen there, and the first time I've been to a working Taoist temple with monks—we stopped for a while and listened to them pray. Cool even if you're not interested in Taoism, with lots of lovely buildings and statues. See more..

    Baoguo Temple image
For those who travel to Emaishan to undertake a pilgrimage there is no greater starting point than Baoguo Temple! Nestled against the foot of the great mountain it's various prayer halls rest quietly behind the temples entrance.. Dark carved wooden reliefs are flanked by red columns, Large ancient bronze Buddhas sit in sublime repose within the gompas.. Adorned with resplendent brocades they reside amidst swirling plumes of acrid sandlewood incense which curl in plumes drifting up into crafted rafters overhead.. There, tiny swallows flit about .. The lulling sweet sounds of mantras float in on the breezes! An afternoon there creates a wonderous trance like effect on the mind! All in all if ever the Pure Lands were to be found in this world, then surely this is a gateway to that place! See more..
  5. 4.5 Baoguang Temple of Chengdu (66 reviews)
    - Beautiful, expansive grounds

    Baoguang Temple of Chengdu image
This is a beautiful, peaceful must-visit temple. Allow yourself ample time to include wandering around the trails amongst the trees and gardens in which you're likely to cross paths with one of the many ginger cats that inhabit the area. If you go late in the afternoon you can join the monks for dinner at 5pm for only 3 RMB!! It's delicious, you're welcome to have 2nd helpings, it's vegetarian of course, and note that you'll be expected to wash the bowls & chopsticks that you used when finished. The mess hall is a little bit hard to find: Look for the caged pickling vats in a small courtyard (see photo) - the entrance is in that courtyard. See more..
  6. 4.5 Wannian Temple (64 reviews)
    - Worth while attraction in emei
Friday: 12:00 AM - 11:59 PM Religious Sites
    Wannian Temple image
Use the cable car towards the temple/monastery and go down by nice and easy path . The cable car is not reaching the temple. There are almost 200 steps left to the temple level but since the area is in nice forest the climbing is easier and with several stops as you wish. The temple itself has no unique speciality but the yard is beatiful, the sceneray through the cable car and when descending are beautiful. then the whole package is worth while. See more..
  7. 5.0 Daocheng Three Holy Mountain (61 reviews)
    - Gorgeous Eden “Dao Cheng Yading”
Friday: 7:00 AM - 6:00 PM Mountains • Historic Walking Areas • Religious Sites
    Daocheng Three Holy Mountain image
Spectacular and stunning scenery I have ever seen in my life. Snow mountain peaks, glacial lakes, alpine meadow, rivers, virgin forests, wild flowers and animals. Well worth the effort to get here as it is a long way mountain trek and very high at about 4600 meters. A bit steeper in the narrow uphill path, takes a long time but definitely worth it. Visited in the best Oct 2018 autumn, it was unforgettable experience I had. Full of love and peace. See more..
  8. 4.0 Qingyin Pavillion (52 reviews)
    - Don't miss it and the entire route down to parking lot
    Religious Sites
    Qingyin Pavillion image
We walk down from Wanian temple yo the parking lot. the walk is strongly recommended and not difficult. if you are in reasonable physical shape you don't need the man carried seats. Mid way is the pavilion. It is one of the most picturesque sites - go and stand on the small hill in front of the pavilion. The combination of the pavilion, the river with the rapids, the bridges , the trees etc is great. Only bad issue - TOO MANY TOURISTS! See more..
  9. 4.0 Oriental Buddha Capital (39 reviews)
    - A must see along with the Giant Buddha Trip
Friday: 8:00 AM - 6:00 PM Religious Sites
    Oriental Buddha Capital image
There are two distinct areas in this scenic spot, which are not actually demarcated on Google Maps. We started on the east side at the Oriental Buddha Scenic Spot entrance. This area has a large complex of caves where there are several rock face carvings and representations of Buddha and His devotees. Also there are references to the Indian roots of Buddhism. There is one area which is similar to The Elephanta Caves of Mumbai. It is suggested that you have an English speaking interpreter as there are no English speaking guides in this area. There are some sections which are authentic ancient, whereas some of them are newly made. I wasn't too critical with which is which. Just took in the "scenery" as it came. After having viewed this area completely, we then moved on to the Giant Buddha attraction. And yes, do remember to carry your passport, as the entrance to this attraction is free if you are above 60 years. See more..

  11. 4.0 Wuyou Temple (34 reviews)
    - Very special monastery
    Religious Sites
    Wuyou Temple image
The last stop on the Giant Buddha complex ticket (although you can do the tour in reverse, making it the first) the climb up to the monastery is intense, but worth every step. Lots to see, including the amazing Arhat Hall, featuring 500 very colourful buddhas. It's a living, working monastery, so you will see the monks at prayer in the very impressive temples. The climb back down is just as intense. Unfortunately. Not a place anyone with any walking issues could ever handle. It's included in the RMB70 entrance fee, but you can't buy a ticket just for the temple itself. See more..

Tagong Temple is in the heart of the town right next to the main square. The local people were friendly and the young children took great delight in sliding down the concrete stair rails, all dressed in their warm winter clothing. We visited each day and sat in the sun watching everyone go about their daily rituals. There was never anyone at the gate so no entrance fee charged. Welll worth spending an hour or two here, Tagong is an awesome little town! See more..

Spent one night here as part of an intrepid tour. Arrived in the dark after a full day's hiking, so really pleased to find this peaceful, unique lodging. Rooms were upstairs to one side of the prayer spaces. Some of the group were in larger dorm style rooms. Our room had two large canopied beds. Clean, basic, functional space. Expect to wake to chanting in the early hours! Communal showers are available - just used to rinse off. Toilets were a highlight! Slightly al fresco and of the traditional communal squat variety! All part of the adventure. Cats and stick insects were included in the stay. A privilege. Must recommend Hard Wok Cafe for food and drink, you pass it at the last set of steps - splendid food! 23. 3.5 Doutuan Mountain (11 reviews)
    - Autumn's best wear in Doutuan mountain
Mountains • Religious Sites • Geologic Formations
    Doutuan Mountain image
We've ascended Doutuan mountain during a weekend in the mid-autumn of 2017. The weather was perfect and the sky clear, so we decided to take the 2h pedestrian path to the top (a 10min cable car ride is also available - 50rmb/person return ticket or 35rmb/person one-way). Entrance fee to the mountain is 67rmb/person. There are two main roads that lead to the top, the right entrance leads to the hotel from where you can hike up to the top for few minutes. The left entrance will lead to the 800 "steep" steps, followed by a long paved way and then more steps again (total number of steps exceeds 1800 with casual rest areas, temples or toilets for a break). A vegetarian restaurant is located near the playground, where you can find various activities (mountain coaster, treetop trekking, zip-line, etc..). The main temple could be found a little further above. From there, a short walk would lead to bottom of the two rocky peaks that represent the symbol of the Doutuan mountain. Pay 20rmb/person if you want to see the tight rope act. An awesome day trip, very highly recommended.. See more..

  26. 4.5 Hell Canyon of Kasi (9 reviews)
    - A rare find in Daocheng
    Religious Sites • Geologic Formations
    Hell Canyon of Kasi image
Tried doing this hike twice. The first time, we did not know what to expect (due to very little available info, even from locals), and did not pack lunch. Hiked for 2 hours and decided to head back. The second time round, we went better prepared with sufficient water and food. Hiked for 4 hours along the canyon, which is a continuous upward climb, gentle incline along a river. Water in the river was crystal clear as it came from the surrounding snow mountains. Pristine primary forest surrounded us all the way. Expect wild flowers and plenty of butterflies accompanying you on your hike during summer. What's really great about this place is that we did not bump into anyone else, other than 2 local villagers herding cows. We read on a Chinese blog that there are 9 wooden bridges to cross, prior to clearing the bush line. However, after managing past the 9th bridge and hiking for another 45 mins, it did not look like we were clearing the bush line anytime soon. Taking into account the weather conditions (rain clouds approaching) and time, we decided to head back. We spent a total of 6 hours there, 4 hours up and 2 hours down. To get there, we hired a car and driver to take us to Kasi Village. The trailhead is right where the flagpoles are. You will need to have the driver wait for your return as there is no other way you can get a ride out. See more..

You may sleep here, but better bring your sleeping bag. Bring food! But it is a good shelter and friendly munks running it. Price 30 Yuan per night. If weather allows you can go up the mountain right north of the monastery (day trip) - right up, then west to 4000m, then along the ridge northeast as far as you want for a great veiw of Gongga Shan and its glaciers. You may go up the glaciers, too (from the monastery follow to the end of the meadow (east), then down, cross the river and follow a small path further up). Two hours to Shang Zimei. See more..

  33. 4.5 Anyue Stone Carvings (5 reviews)
    - Not easily accessible, but worth the effort
Ancient Ruins • Religious Sites • Monuments & Statues
    Anyue Stone Carvings image
These carvings were made in the side of mountains beginning in the 6th century and continuing into the 11th. Given the length of time they have been exposed to the elements, they are incredibly well preserved, many with paint still clearly visible. The workmanship is exceptional, especially the Guanyin at Pilu, an iconic rendering of which serves as Anyue's county/city logo. The problem for most travelers is that the carvings are widely distributed and require transport for convenient access. Anyue is 2.5 hours from Chengdu. I hired a car and driver for 1300RMB, left Chengu at 6:30 and returned at 21:00. We covered four sites with only a short break for a bowl of noodles for lunch: Pilu, Huayen, Thousand Buddha, and Yuanjue. There are at least two more sites, but there was not enough light to get to them. The sites were largely deserted in winter. See more..

Whilst some may seek out the Dinosaur museum or Salt works, I journeyed to Zigong just for this very tea house, and I am so glad I did. It is as good as the Lonely Planet makes out. Hanging over the Fuxī River laze on the terraces looking out to Fazàng Temple, or base yourself in the inner courtyard built around a koi-filled pond under magnolia.

So I was stuck as to things to do in chengdu since the floods of 2013 had pretty much made the major attractions hard to get to. So i took a long distance bus to anyue and then you catch a city bus to one of the locations (bus #6). Well the bus goes to the last stop and i still had to walk a mile to get here. The enclosed area has many carvings into the grotto See more..

This site was much larger then I originally anticipated when we first arrived. It had very interesting architecture and we enjoyed the site. There was a nice view of the Jialing River and surrounding area from this site. I thought it was worth the time to check out. See more..

There is a lot to see and do amid some beautiful countryside here. Most people these days consider Qincheng Mountain to be the birthplace of Daoism (Taoism) but actually it first began here. The problem was that during Mr Maos period of cultural vandalism the temples on Hemingshan were destroyed. However the local government have spent a considerable amount of time and money restoring/reconstructing them. So you could visit these. Alternatively you could just explore the natural rural beauty of the area. Or you could do as I did spend the afternoon rock climbing and abseiling followed by a delicious meal in a local restaurant. The choice is yours. Only 2 hours from Chengdu by bus and well worth the trip even in the rain. See more..
