    - Beautiful scenic ancient town
Friday: 12:00 AM - 11:59 PM Historic Sites
    Luodai Ancient Town image
Luodai is an ancient town just outside Chungdu. The buildings date back to the 1600's. The main street is 1km long with ancient buildings on either side containing shops, craftsmen and restaurants. There are a number of dress and costume shops where people dress up to have their photo taken. It is easy to reach by either bus or taxi from Chengdu. The journey is c. 20km and takes about 45-60 mins. On a Sunday it is busy with local torists. Many of the shops and street vendors are of the native Hakka tribe. Well worth a visit for half a day. 4. 4.0 Qingyang Palace (Green Ram Temple) (183 reviews)
    - Fun to see a Taoist temple, for a change

Qingyang Palace (Green Ram Temple) image
Most of the temples you're going to see in China, especially in the east of the country, are Buddhist, with a smattering of Confucian. This is one of the very first Taoist temples I've seen there, and the first time I've been to a working Taoist temple with monks—we stopped for a while and listened to them pray. Cool even if you're not interested in Taoism, with lots of lovely buildings and statues. See more..

  6. 4.0 Shangli Ancient Town (60 reviews)
    - breathe of fresh air
Friday: 12:00 AM - 11:59 PM Historic Sites
    Shangli Ancient Town image
Our first stop in China was Chengdu, which we did enjoy, but it was too high market and didn't really have the feel of China that we wanted. I had did some research and found this little gem of a town. It was easy to get to Ya'an from chengdu, via bus and then we tracked down a little minibus that took us to the ancient city, through the meandering lanes, along the mountainside. Overall spending about £6 for the 4hr journey. We found a guesthouse that we stayed in for £5 for the 2 of us and set about looking around the town. There is so much history in this place and every way you turn is a perfect photograph. I loved getting lost down the little alleyways and behind the shops. I would recommend this to anyone who would like to see a traditional chinese town. See more..
  7. 4.5 Jiaju Tibetan Village (56 reviews)
    - Beautiful village. Stay the night
Friday: 8:00 AM - 8:00 PM Historic Sites • Architectural Buildings
    Jiaju Tibetan Village image
Most tour groups make one stop at Jiaju village—at the viewing platform, just to take photos with the whole valley. But you’d be missing out if you came all the way to western Sichuan without spending a night in a Tibetan homestay in Jiaju. Stay for at least one night with a Tibetan family, have them cook you dinner and breakfast, and be sure to take a clean room on the top floor. Wake up early to stand on the roof of your homestay and to enjoy one of the most beautiful views you’ll ever see. Talk to your host family and learn about the Gyarong Tibetans of western Sichuan. Five stars for the overnight experience. See more..
  8. 4.0 Jiezi Ancient Town (38 reviews)
    - Nicer ancient town
Friday: 12:00 AM - 11:59 PM Historic Sites
    Jiezi Ancient Town image
I have been to dozens of ancient towns and found this to be quite nice. Less crowded than the typical ancient town, and quite pleasant. Can easily spend an afternoon strolling around enjoying the scenery and wandering around. Be sure to try the local ye'er ("yeh-arr") a little sticky rice cake steamed on what the vendor said was a tangerine leaf. There are usually 2 kinda a sweet one (tiande "tea-ann-duh") and a meat filled one (roude "row-duh"). See more..

All the buldings are inside a beautiful park. Very calm place, I would say ideal for families and couples. Entrance is for free and inside you can rent an electric car (80yuan/1st hour; 40yuan/second hour). Easy to operate, my daughter drove all the way around the park. We finished visiting in about 1,5 hour. For couples, it may worth to spend there even longer, enjoy the nature as the whole park may seem very romantic. See more..

  11. 4.0 Taoping Qiang Village (20 reviews)
    - One New Village and One Old Village
Friday: 12:00 AM - 11:59 PM Historic Sites
    Taoping Qiang Village image
I love it because of the old one. In the new village, there are many stores selling the local popular Qiang artifacts: Qiang sculpture, Qiang embroidery and Qiangdi. The old village is located on the Half-slope behind new village. After climbing up the wooden steps, the first site come to your eyes is the primitive and mysterious Qiang dwellings with thousands of years. The single buildings of these dwellings are made of stones, which is built according to the mountain, ups and downs. The local-style dwelling has two to three layers, the upstars for people and the downstars for storing toors or the circle of cattle and sheep. The tunnels are built inside Qiang village, connected with each other, which makes the dwellings as an organic whole. The village has a good defense function. The tallest building is the Diaolou, vigorous tall and straight, which stands in the centre of the village. Diaolou is the landmark of the village. See more..

  13. 4.0 Anren Ancient Town (16 reviews)
    - Amazing place, really brings the history of the past 150 years to life!
Friday: 12:00 AM - 11:59 PM Historic Sites • Ancient Ruins
    Anren Ancient Town image
I have been to many places in China which celebrate different dynasties, but what is different here is the whole place isn't ancient, it is just old. This town illustrates the era of the Chinese Republic. Built 80 or so years ago, in an affluent area of Sichuan, the so called ancient street celebrates in a more authentic way than say Jinli in Chengdu or Ciqikou in Chongqing. What we have here is a shopping street, without the modern day brands, We have a huge variety of street food as well as restaurants in buildings that have changed very little since the 1930's. There is a tram to take you from here to some older buildings that are mainly museums. The area is delightful, take your time, spend a day or more. I will be back, as it is an easy day trip from Chengdu (take a bus from Chadianzi bus station, only 14 yuan each way!) See more..

  16. 3.5 Former Residence of Li Bai (10 reviews)
    - Li Bai's home in Qingling
Friday: 9:00 AM - 5:00 PM Historic Sites
Former Residence of Li Bai image
Li bai's home town,g former residence. This is quiet and peaceful, containing statues and paintings depicting his life A monumental portal at the entrance , things get smaller until, after walking through a farmworkers' hamlet.you come to the single storey walled enclosure that reputedly was his home. Given that he died in 762 AD, you might be sceptical about the age of all the articles in the study, bedrooms of family members, etc. Stil, it's a quiet place, and the toilets are only half as old as the rest. Don't expect startling insights into the works and life of China's greatest poet. The rest of the site has a pretty pagoda on a hill, an imposing modern statue of the poet, and some so so courtyards. 40 yuan by taxi here from Jiangyou, 4 yuan back on the bus. If you are a Li Bai fan, give it a whirl, if not , accord it low priority. See more..

    Wangyu Ancient Town image
The transport is by minibus from Yaan over a fairly difficult road 25 k。 128 stone steps greet you as you get of into the modern Village。 Yes all up!But the only modern item was a grey plastic bin。 You are back in old China,The rough stone street is narrow and the houses unaltered。 But you do have people liiving there and to add to the mix some young glued to their mobiles sitting outside among the older residents。 There is a Hotel at the far end but I have no details。 We found a house being rebuilt so it is being looked after! 2 cafes in the very stark modern village, Nice bridge but there is a walk over it to the left involving a suspension bridge and a farming community。 See more..

Went here in January. No tourists except us. Nothing was going on just some opened shops. The buildings were rather new, instead of being old. Just looked like imitates. The signs telling about the history of this place were strange somehow and the story's felt made up. Probably there is more to explore during another time of the year, but all in all nothing special. 25. 4.5 Wenchuan Special Tourist Area (3 reviews)
    - Beautiful mountains & scenery, & primitive villages
Historic Sites • Points of Interest & Landmarks
    Wenchuan Special Tourist Area image
This is a place of beautiful natural scenery. Ten years ago (2008), Wenchuan County of Aba was destroyed by an 8.0-magnitude earthquake. Much of Muli County is a place that has changed little over the past 100 years, albeit, many people wear modern-day footwear and clothing. Large stocks of corn are strapped onto horses for transportation. Food supplies are carried in weaved baskets carried by horses (maybe mules), sometimes along very dangerous mountain paths, where a wrong step can lead to a deadly fall. Some say that Muli County, Liangshan Yi Autonomous Prefecture, is the poorest place in China. The villages (many of which are on the side of a cliff and difficult to get to) here are very primitive, and they have little correspondence with the rest of China. It's almost on a cliff. While visiting one village, the Naxi people held various activities and danced Guo Zhuang. The locals here seem happy. They all greet us with a smile. The monuments dedicated to the 2008 earthquake are nice, but I find the local villages, mountain roads/pathways, and people to be of much greater interest. To visit the area, one needs a least a tour guide or a Chinese speaking person. Also, be prepared for one-star, or lower, sleeping accommodations. See more..

In May 1935, the Chinese Red Army had its command centre here, together with Chairman Mao’s residence, and a Red Army ferry. However, during the battle, the ferry did not have enough capacity to take all the forces of the Red Army across the river safely during the battle to escape as they were greatly outnumbered by enemy forces. - The Yi people of Ancient Town
Friday: 12:00 AM - 11:59 PM Historic Sites
    Lizhou Ancient Town image
Although I enjoy looking at the buildings of China’s many ancient towns, I also like seeing its people. In Lizhou Ancient Town and many area villages, one can see that the people are very poor and live under extremely poor conditions. As my attached photos show, there are many very poor children, but seem to play happily, not knowing how many more fortunate of the world’s children live. During festive occasions, many Yi girls and others will dress in very elaborate, beautiful costumes. On the streets, Yi women will be offering to sell mountain fungi. Many of the younger adults have left to work in the industrialized cities, leaving behind young children in the care of grandparents. I saw a grandmother cutting her grandson’s hair. Some of the young adults will be walking around with their mobile phones, and texting their friends. To the elderly, this is especially a hard time. Their world will soon disappear. See more..

  35. 4.5 Qingxi Ancient Town (2 reviews)
    - Fascinating and Friendly
Friday: 12:00 AM - 11:59 PM Historic Sites
    Qingxi Ancient Town image
Qingxi Town is worth a couple of hours on anyone's itinerary. The old part of the town (really no more than a village) retains part of its ancient defensive walls from where you have an excellent view of the surrounding countryside and the Minshan mountains in the distance. It consists of four streets which radiate out from a central tower at each point of the compass. The buildings are wooden with attractive and ornate decorative carvings. For the most part, one family lives in each of the upper floor units and runs a small business from the lower. We were struck by the fascinating displays of dried mushrooms (for which this area is celebrated), dried fruit and vegetables. During our visit, areas of the main streets were also covered with drying corn and oil seed. (There was a traditional and well-worn pair of huge millstones set up in the road which we were assured were still in use.) Although there is evidence of Chinese tourism here, westerners are extremely rare. We visited another, smaller village on the outskirts of Qingxi where one villager said that we were the first white people she had seen there while another, older man, described the abundant wild-life he remembered from his childhood, most of it, alas, now near-extinct. Local people here are very curious and extremely friendly. Small but nervous children follow you at a safe distance, older people come very close and stare while younger adults want to take your photograph. See more..

    GuBoXuanGuan ChenLieGuan image
I've never been to a place quite like this. One, the fact that it's essentially a cemetery makes it unique as a "travel destination", but the real thing is the proximity of it to the village. It's so striking to see people going about their daily lives literally in the shadow of these hanging coffins; if you want to drive from Luobiao to another of the small villages in the area, you HAVE to pass that. Think of that, and ponder the implications of it! Practically speaking, you have to take a bus from Chengdu to Gong County (Gongxian), then from Gong County to Luobiao village. It's about a 8-9 hour trip. You'll have to stay in the big hotel in town and then go the next day. I'd advise walking there - taking the same road that passes the police station you go to in order to "sign in" upon arrival. It's 3km or less to get to the hanging coffins. About a 30-minute walk or so. It's 20 yuan to get in, and that includes the museum. I'd say do the little museum first. No English, no photos, but they have one of the coffins in there as well as a few photos and a reconstruction of what the Bo people would have looked like. The site itself is one or two cliff faces, as well as a cave that doesn't go back too far. It's not a huge place, but the view is fantastic, and imagining how the Bo people must have hung the coffins is mindblowing. It's really something special. I'd say it's DEFINITELY worth a visit. Bring water - can't buy it or any snacks anywhere around. Also, if you don't speak Chinese or have a Chinese person with you to help you out, forget coming here - nobody speaks any English at all. Please take this into consideration before coming. My friends and I all speak Chinese, so we were alright, but I cannot imagine how someone could go there without the language. This is deep China.
