4.0National Buffalo Museum(275 reviews) - Enjoying a Day at the National Buffalo Museum Monday: 8:00 AM - 8:00 PM Speciality Museums
Great trip! We arrived at approximately 10 am and made our way inside the museum to buy our tickets. Right next to the entrance was a theatre, that was playing a short 15 minute informational video about the history of the Buffalo. The museum was small, but contained many interesting artifacts and detailed filled plaques about the buffalos significance in history. The museum did a very good job incorporating pictures to explain the main talking points on the plaques. Along with artifacts and plaques, the museum also contained multiple videos, a play area for the kids and items that you could touch. There was also a viewing deck, where one could go out on to enjoy the fresh air and watch the Buffalo herds in the distance. At the end of the museum was a small gift shop, that contained authentic Buffalo products. Tip: I recommend spending 2 hours here if you truly want to see everything.See more..

Located just off I-29 interstate, The Fargo Air Museum is an easily accessed pet friendly, must-stop location. North Dakota's premiere aviation destination, the Fargo Air Museum's dual hangars are home to aircraft of all eras - from a modern unmanned reconnaissance drone to the "most accurate recreation of a Wright Brothers' flyer the Smithsonian Institute has ever seen." A "flying" museum, many of the airplanes occasionally take to the sky, a unique feature not found in the vast majority of the nation's static-display air museums. More than just a simple place to display its many aircraft, military memorabilia and exhibits, the Fargo Air Museum also houses one of the midwest's largest Aviation libraries. In addition, the museum hosts educational day-camps, speakers and seminars for flight fans of all ages to enjoy. The Fargo Air Museum is a fantastic choice for a unique venue for corporate & private events and has quickly become a local favorite for hosting wedding ceremonies and receptions. Please email for event rental information. The legendary baseball player and Fargo's hometown hero is honored with a 72-foot long glassed-in exhibit at the West Acres Shopping Mall, tracing all aspects of his career, including major awards, uniforms and some of the home run balls from 1961, the year he broke Babe Ruth's record with 61 home runs.See more..
We had dedicated a day in the town to museums while staying in Medora, and glad we did, it was worth the visit. The staff are really helpful and clearly (and with good reason !) take pride in their museum. The first floor was packed with interesting exhibits on Lakota life, ranching, prairie life, and all things bison. Second floor was displays on rodeo life. Our dwell time here was about at least an hour - so much too see. The staff told me people slip in to escape the midday heat, then stay for the true interesting experience. Well done town of Medora, this museum is outstandingSee more..

There is a small museum on the first floor, but one of my favorites. There is a courtroom on the 2nd floor with a great skit for a small fee. Everything is reasonably priced. This, in my opinion, is a hidden gem in Medora.See more..

The museum has a former depot and fair amount of rolling stock: flat cars, box cars, tankers, cabooses, a couple of yard engines, etc.. It has railroad hand tools, uniforms, maps, signs, photos, timetables and cases of small railroad items, such as hand telegraph kits and model hopper cars. It has a model railroad layout, and a tiny outdoor railroad which offers rides to children two or three times a year. (Check in advance for dates, 701-663-9322.) Displays are well signed, and the guide we met was very friendly and extremely knowledgeable. Railroad fans will love it. Those who aren't railroad nuts would still find it an interesting place to spend an hour or two. It is open 1-5 PM Memorial Day to Labor Day. There is no admission fee, but the museum would appreciate a donation of $2 a head or $5 per family. Well worth it, IMHO. There isn't much of a gift shop, but they do sell railroad-theme tee shirts and coffee mugs.See more..
We were impressed with this museum. The displays are all very nice. My 2 and 5 year olds enjoyed the experience too. They have a table upstairs with some battery-operated Thomas trains which were fun for my boys. There are also a few hands-on whistles, bells and displays. My husband and I both found it to be an interesting place to visit. It is free and they have donation boxes if you wish to donate.See more..

4.0Pioneer Machinery Building(7 reviews) - Interesting Pioneer Machiney Building Dickinson, North Dakota Monday: 9:00 AM - 5:00 PM Speciality Museums
I enjoyed walking through and seeing the many historic farming and pioneer equipment in this small and well done museum. The admission price was free. Parking is free. Its part of the museum complex area in the city. It took me about half hour to see the machinery. Volunteer staff is there to answer any questions you might have. They were nice and informative.See more..
This is a great reason to get off the interstate to learn about the idea far ahead of its time to build a north/south railroad from Winnipeg, Canada to Galveston, TX at the turn of the last century to allow midwest farmers to bypass the Mississippi River and eastern middlemen for a direct market outlet and newly built Panama Canal. Wish we had it today! This depot was also the former home to Jazz singer great, Miss Peggy Lee, when she lived there with her family from 1934-1937 and the community of Wimbledon stepped up to see to it that this little girl with a remarkable voice, got launched on her way to international fame. Well worth the stop! http://themidlandcontinentaldepot.com/See more..
4.5Paul Broste Rock Museum(5 reviews) - A real gem (pardon the pun) in a nice little town. Speciality Museums
This museum is the kind of place that I really like to visit: It's modest in size, but large in ambition. It's basically one man's rock collection, but this is a man who really, really liked rocks—so there's a lot to look at. Paul Broste assembled an amazing collection of rocks from all over. The infinity room, which shows off his rock spheres to good effect, is quite cool. And there are other curiosities, like some of his paintings, some Native American artifacts, some violins from Norwegian ancestors. This is the kind of small town museum that really captures something about the people and the place you are visiting. I can't think of a better way to spend an hour in this part of the world. Doris, our guide, was very warm and informative. Overall, well worth the cost of admission!See more..
This restored Depot in Minot houses a good selection of Railroad Memorabilia and is sited right next to conventional running lines. There is ample parking and the entrance is through the research library, so I was left to my own devises regarding my visit. Plenty of interesting things to see and well worth a visit.See more..

5.0Toy Farmer Museum(3 reviews) - We liked the Toy Farmer Museum. Monday: 10:00 AM - 6:00 PM Speciality Museums We had an extra day to spend in Jamestown and took the Chan San San Scenic Backway to Lamour. I don't reccommend taking this long gravel road to get there. The road was much longer than it's reported to be. It took us two hours and 90 miles to get there from Jamestown; the paved highway would've taken us there. We hadn't heard of the Toy Farmer magazine. The man published the magazine and his wife had been selling antiques at flea markets when the man was encouraged to sell farm toys. People from around the world donated farm toys to him that he put in a barn turned into museum. They have a small toy store in the front. We bought metal planes for our grandsons. There are stairs to the second floor.See more..
4.5Coleman Museum(3 reviews) - Very large displace of treasures from the history of Ellendale Speciality Museums
This old building once housed a bank and a dental office and all the rooms are packed with memories of the past. Everything from clothes, organs, school and college items, sporting events and team items, photos, pictures, quilts, household items to a wonderful display of military history with uniforms, pictures, flags, metals and much more. The look back to the start of Ellendale and the agricultural and farming area is large and complete. Plan to spend a few hours.See more..
