  2. 4.0 Geographical Center of North America (67 reviews)
    - Nothing fancy. Simple obelisk. It is indeed not the centre of the US, but rather of the entire North American continent.

Geographical Center of North America image
To reply to the review below, as the flags indicate, this monument is the centre of the North American continent following one of the definitions of North America being Canada, United States, and Mexico. The Belle Fourche monument is the approximate centre of the United States only (i.e. without Canada and Mexico). Anyways, this is essentially just an obelisk at the corner of two highways with a Mexican restaurant at the lot as well. They could've put in a Canadian restaurant beside it like Beavertails or a poutinerie or something. I wish this was a more significant area lined or surrounded with lawn with landscaped gardens and benches instead of bland, paved surface with three flags and a pot of flowers. A gift shop for North American souvenirs would be nice was well. The centre of the US monument at Belle Fourche or the International Peace Garden come to mind for inspirations on improving this area. Just another part of North Dakota art meant to draw tourist. Must work, I stopped. Actually, I was going to Wahpeton to golf in 2 states on the same course, but I did deliberately stop at Jamestown to see the World's Largest Buffalo just a couple minutes off I-94. See more..

You can google the story behind this memorial. It’s very touching. Google address is slightly off, but you will find it. The pole is the highest stone in the cemetery. It’s a beautiful location. It made my heart happy to see how well the cemetery is kept up. See more..

  12. 4.5 Wishek Badger (3 reviews)
    - Badger with Attitude"
    Monuments & Statues
    Wishek Badger image
The Wishek Badger, a painted concrete sculpture, is a representation of the mascot of Wishek High School. It was constructed in 1978 by a group of boys enrolled in some sort of youth program. It stands at the corner of the city block where the high school once stood. The historic WPA city auditorium still stands in this same city block, and across the street west is the McTwist Drive-In. It's worth a stroll across the street from the McTwist to take a look at the Badger, who, unlike so many roadside statues, conveys attitude. He strikes a defiant pose. I wonder about those red eyes--was he once wired to light them up? His paint job could use a little touch-up. See more..
  13. 4.0 Carl Ben Eielson Memorial Arch (2 reviews)
    - Memorial to an Aviation Hero
    Monuments & Statues
The memorial to aviation hero Carl Ben Eielson, who hailed from Hatton, North Dakota, is located a mile north of town on Hwy 18. Look for St. John's Cemetery on the west side of the road, and the big archway over the entrance is the Eielson memorial. Eielson and other family members are buried straight ahead just inside the arch. The arch has copper panels that tell about Eielson's life, his accomplishments, and his tragic death in 1929. Construction of the memorial was supported by contributions from schoolchildren across the state. The arch itself is one of the most interesting memorial structures in the region, quite grand for North Dakota! Definitely worth the stop if you're driving through the area. See more..
