  1. 4.5 Theodore Roosevelt National Park (1.855 reviews)
    - Underrated Gem of the National Park System
Spent More than 3 hours National Parks
    Theodore Roosevelt National Park image
Well, well! We have found another hidden gem of the National Park system. We found TR National Park to include critters and fowl by the score, scenics to beat the band...the works! I'm sure it helped that we visited in April, and so had many trails and pullouts all to ourselves. We were the only visitors to the phenomenal petrified forest and other trail sights. The southern unit seems to have the critters and the northern unit the speculator views. We preferred the beauty of the northern unit...and we strongly recommend you travel the 60 miles north of Medora to visit that jewel. Thank you, National Park Service...you've got a gem on your hands! See more..

    Scandinavian Heritage Park image
This is a well-done spot for seeing some buildings, statues of some famous Scandinavians and items which were used in past centuries in the homes of Scandinavians. Buildings are in great shape, including the beautiful replica Norwegian church. The huge Dala horse is fun to stand under and take pictures of. Employees in the visitor center are helpful. Volunteers in the church and some other buildings are knowledgeable and friendly. No admission charged, but please leave something in the visitors center to help cover costs. See more..

  6. 3.5 Splasher's of the South Seas (120 reviews)
    - Expensive but fun
    Monday: Water Parks
Splasher's of the South Seas image
Its a great place for families from babies to grandparents. There are private cabanas you can rent and plenty of deck chairs to relax in. There are lifeguards, which is rare for a hotel pool. The hot tub is enormous. Some things to note: the pool towels are very rough, even for the usual low-grade pool towels in hotels everywhere. You can't bring in your own food or drinks. If you are a guest of the hotel, you must pay separately to access the water park, and you can only use your passes the day you arrive (no last minute morning swim before check-out). Just some things to consider when planning your stay :) See more..

  9. 3.5 Keelboat Park (48 reviews)
    - Nice place to see a piece of American History
Spent < 1 hour Bodies of Water • Biking Trails • Parks
    Keelboat Park image
Keelboats were an important means of transportation in this part of the Missouri River. They carried goods and people along and across the river. The park has an authentic Keelboat that kids can climb on and which gives you a picture of what these boats were like. Great view of the river from here and great place to watch people enjoying themselves along the river. See more..
  10. 4.5 Oak Park (47 reviews)
    - Great nature walk
Spent 2-3 hours Parks • Playgrounds
    Oak Park image
Oak park is my favorite place to bike or run in Minot. There are two many paths - a road open to cars and bikes with a one mile loop, and a bath restricted to foot traffic that goes a total of 1.4 miles. Lots of trees, and the foot path winds through a very secluded area. Wildlife includes plentiful geese and squirrels, and I've also seen raccoons and deer. See more..

  13. 4.5 Lake Metigoshe State Park (38 reviews)
    - What can I say? Great park!!!
    State Parks
    Lake Metigoshe State Park image
For me being around water, trails, trees, wildlife, birds....well, Lake Metigoshe State Park supplies all that. Seems like every time I visit there's a new "surprise" or something "different". I enjoy spending time at the South and North Hill Picnic area. This visit I was greeted by a doe and her two yearlings and an American Bald Eagle flew over just after my arrival. I went into the campground and found a portion of the Old Oak Trail that I wanted to hike. It went out to Oriole Island. I had heard there were loons there but unfortunately I didn't see them. I was lucky to see other song birds in the trees though and chipmunks and a snake. This trip I didn't stay in the park but I had stayed in the Cormorant Cabin previously and enjoyed it very much. Sunrises over School Section Lake can be really amazing. I hope you enjoy the photos I'm including. See more..

  16. 4.5 Little Missouri National Grassland (32 reviews)
    - Great Inland sea
National Parks • Nature & Wildlife Areas • Scenic Drives
    Little Missouri National Grassland image
The national grassland is a massive amount of property that surrounds all three units of TRNP. While the north Unit is surrounded by this green plain that is so endless it almost looks like the sea, South Unit has a mixture of plains, plateaus and badlands. It is here in the National Grassland, that our group took a two hour trail ride with Medora Stables. The views atop the grassland plateaus are every bit as amazing as the view from the overlooks like Painted Canyon. It is also here that we saw what brought Roosevelt to the Dakotas, cattle ranching. Dozens of cows were grazing here in the protected grasslands high above. However, in addition to cattle grazing, the designated area has Ponderosa Pine forest and badland buttes. I thoroughly enjoyed my time here and was so glad we were able to connect to the Old West that brought Roosevelt here. See more..

    Superslide Amusement Park image
We brought our 3 year old daughter here for a few hours of fun after just getting to town. She was able to ride almost everything. It’s about 2 tickets a ride and you can get 25 tickets for $20. The staff were super friendly and accommodating. Our daughter was able to go slow or fast on the swings, front or backwards by asking. (No other kids were on them when doing this). Totally work a few hours of laughs. See more..
  18. 4.5 Icelandic State Park (28 reviews)
    - Excellent State Park Campground!
    State Parks
    Icelandic State Park image
Icelandic State Park was the break we needed. My wife and I spent two weeknights here in June on a Monday and Tuesday. There were very few people camping. It was brilliantly quiet and we had two moonless nights that made star gazing pretty amazing! The bathroom/showers were incredible! Clean and spacious! Loved the hot water! We did have to make contact with the Park Rangers and they were super helpful. We spent time hiking around the campground area, around the lake, and across the dam. We enjoyed spening time in the Heritage Center’s small museum. Firewood is $6 for a bundle. We appreciated seeing a doe walk bravely through the camping area. The red squirrels were psycho! They ran all over the place from sunup to sundown chasing each other and chattering loudly. Other than being rained on while tenting... everything else was excellent! We look forward to being back! 19. 5.0 Cannonball Concretions Pullout (25 reviews)
    - A unique feature of the park
Spent < 1 hour National Parks • Geologic Formations
    Cannonball Concretions Pullout image
Readily accessible from the scenic road, this unique feature of the park made us pretty curious where it came from. The information sign explains it further. The balls are pretty slippery and my sister got abrasions after slipping from one of them. So please, be very careful if trying to step on them to pose for photos. There is also a trail to the side of it which leads to a prairie dog town. Too bad it was extremely hot when we visited, we did not go deep and only stayed at the balls. See more..
  20. 4.0 Lewis and Clark State Park (24 reviews)
    - Safe views
Monday: 9:00 AM - 5:00 PM Spent More than 3 hours State Parks
Lewis and Clark State Park image
Lewis and Clark State Park is situated on one of the upper bays of Lake Sakakawea. The rugged buttes of the North Dakota Badlands display a towering backdrop to one of the state's best recreation areas. The park, of course, is named for the Corps of Discovery explorers, Meriwether Lewis and William Clark. The expedition camped nearby on April 17, 1805, and an interpretive trail marker has been placed within the park to commemorate their historic journey through North Dakota. Lake Sakakawea offers excellent fishing (Walleye, Sauger, and Northern Pike) and boating opportunities. The park also offers a swimming beach with washed sand. Two rare fish species, the pallid sturgeon and the prehistoric-looking paddlefish, can occasionally be found in the lake's western reaches. See more..
  21. 4.5 Cross Ranch State Park (23 reviews)
    - Don’t miss this place!
Monday: 9:00 AM - 5:00 PM State Parks
    Cross Ranch State Park image
Located along seven miles of the last free-flowing, undeveloped stretches of the Missouri River, North Dakota's Cross Ranch Centennial State Park is rich in both cultural and natural history. The park is purposely left primitive to preserve the land's natural beauty. The River Peoples Visitor Center has displays and information about the once mighty Missouri River, which has now been tamed through a series of major dams and reservoirs along its length. A boat ramp is available for those wishing to explore this scenic segment of the river, while anglers will find walleye, pike and bass in its waters. Canoe rentals are also available. An extensive trail system can be explored either on foot or on cross country skis during the winter months. During the summer, the trails allow access to a 5,000-acre dedicated nature preserve where mixed grass prairie, river bottom forests and woody draws can be seen. Cross country ski and snowshoe rentals are available. A back country area is open for those wishing to hike to their camping spot. See more..

    Beaver Lake State Park image
This small state park was a surprise for us. We live in the town where I grew up and this gem is only 60 miles away, yet I had never been there and wasn't really aware it existed until a few weeks ago. It is a pleasant place to camp, with about 30 campsites, most with electricity, and 2 camping cabins. It is well shaded, and the electric sites are all pull-throughs. There are two very clean comfort stations with showers, a playground, swimming beach, dock, fishing, hiking trails, a ranger program for the kids on Saturday afternoon and beautiful lake views. We really enjoyed our weekend here and plan to go back next summer. See more..

    Ryan Park image
Ryan Lake Park was looking good as it was previously mowed for the 4th of July. Ducks and their ducklings were enjoying the water as a family was feeding them from one of the docks/piers. Fish were jumping. Yes, they are in there. Cattails have taken over a lot of this little pond’s shoreline since my last visit . Gophers have been very busy digging holes everywhere around the lake. Gopher mounds and holes are easily seen everywhere. Be careful walking around on the grass. You wouldn’t want to twist your ankle stepping in a gopher hole. Checking out Ryan Lake Park is certainly worth a visit. See more..

If you plan to do a day hike here, please remember to bring water with you. Larimore Dam is a 25 minute drive from the city of Grand Forks and offers a nice little park with a view over the actual dam. There is a huge field where one can play sports, and there is also a playground with different swings and slides, although it shows the wear of time. We started at the Sculpture Gardens, taking time to play in the interactive musical sculpture, get our picture taken with the Moose, Velociraptor, and several other sculptures. Then we followed the path over past the campground and to the Zoo entrance. We didn't go into the zoo but did take time to enjoy the mural and the flowers. We would definitely go back again. The places we didn't visit during this visit were the two playgrounds, the aquatic center, the baseball/softball fields and the carousel...but maybe next time. See more..

    - Beautiful Campground and Park!
    Parks
    Riverside Park & Campground image
We spent two nights during Labor Day Weekend camping at the Riverside Park and Campground in Walhalla. The campground was small, but it was very well looked after and laid out well. We appreciated the large camping spaces. We called the posted number to purchase wood to be dropped off for our campfire. The firewood guy backed his pickup right into our site and helped us unload the wood near our fire pit. We got a nice amount of firewood for $20. We encountered one problem... the first morning I tried to use the bathroom, some nincompoop plugged the toilets in the men’s room so that they were not useable. It looked as if it was done on purpose. Ugh! We contacted management and this problem was taken care of quickly. There is plenty of excellent playground equipment for kids to enjoy, and there is also a swimming pool in the park. The Walhalla area is pretty beautiful. We enjoyed the day hikes we took around the area, especially to the Pembina Gorge. We were totally satisfied with our time camping here. We look forward to camping here again in the future. Veterans Memorial Park image
This Veterans Memorial Park is being built up to be a really big deal in Grand Forks. Hey! Our Veterans are a really big deal! I, for one, am very grateful for those that have bravely fought (and, sadly, many died) for the freedoms we have today. This park has been 10 years in the making. The official dedication date for this park was on Saturday, September 11th, 2021. The dedication may have already taken place, but there are still many parts to this park that are still being pulled together. It is looking pretty amazing now, but more is still to come. It is certainly a "work in progress," and we are very fortunate to have a place like this in Grand Forks dedicated to those that have defended this great nation. God bless the USA! See more..
