I’ve seen a lot of improvement over the past few years! Very nice area and the manager is more than willing to help. The rental area for boats is at a very reasonable price and they also sell ice cream and sodas. People are frequently going out just to pick up trash that visitors leave in the parking lot. Little Missouri National Grassland image
The national grassland is a massive amount of property that surrounds all three units of TRNP. While the north Unit is surrounded by this green plain that is so endless it almost looks like the sea, South Unit has a mixture of plains, plateaus and badlands. It is here in the National Grassland, that our group took a two hour trail ride with Medora Stables. The views atop the grassland plateaus are every bit as amazing as the view from the overlooks like Painted Canyon. It is also here that we saw what brought Roosevelt to the Dakotas, cattle ranching. Dozens of cows were grazing here in the protected grasslands high above. However, in addition to cattle grazing, the designated area has Ponderosa Pine forest and badland buttes. I thoroughly enjoyed my time here and was so glad we were able to connect to the Old West that brought Roosevelt here. See more..

You can enjoy a visit to the informative Visitor Center, take a hike/walk on the trail behind the Center, or take the 8 mile Auto Tour. During our visit we did these things and enjoyed it all. The staff is very helpful, they answered our questions and provided information about the property, even took a few photos for us. Along the trail and auto tour we saw wildflowers, birds, waterfowl, and beautiful scenery. Binoculars are helpful. The NWR is located just off Route 83 between Minot and Bismark at Lake Audubon and Lake Sakakwea. You can spend minutes or hours but don't miss it. See more..

We enjoyed the drive to get there also. Many photo ops of birds along the road to the entrance. There is a visitor center but we were there before it opened. The drive was nice and we saw birds, but the drive could have taken you to the shore a little more. The birds are hiding in the grass so driving slow is a must. TIPS: Take your water and pack a lunch. You are in the middle of no where. Take your time. Not for small children (they would get bored) If you liked my review, click me a thumbs up. Thanks See more..

Upper Souris National Wildlife Refuge image
I found the Upper Souris National Wildlife refuge by chance, driving north along ND-28. I’m very glad I did. The lake was very beautiful and incredibly peaceful. For the time that I was there (about an hour) I didn’t see a single soul. Definitely worth seeing if you’re looking for peace and quiet, off the grid. See more..
  8. 3.0 Lake Ilo National Wildlife Refuge (3 reviews)
    - Serene refuge, a good place for bird watching
Spent 1-2 hours Bodies of Water • Nature & Wildlife Areas
This nature area was right off highway 200 and was a perfect stop for our tail-gate picnic. We found the refuge to be wonderfully maintained, with several natural areas for viewing water fowl and other wildlife. As another reviewer mentioned, we agree that the refuge was peaceful. Although the landscape in other areas of the county were dotted with fixtures from the current oil boom, we found the refuge to be serene and picturesque. See more..

Just visited the refuge and was surprised to see how large the lake was. I was hoping for birds and although there were lots of song birds (gold finches, yellow warblers, fly catchers and lots of black birds). I didn't see much for waterfowl or shore birds. Still...not disappointed. Beautiful auto tour. Great places to pull in, park and walk around. Nice picnic area and boat landings. I'm hoping to return during fall bird migration. If nothing else the fall foliage will make the trip worthwhile. See more..
  10. 4.0 Long Lake National Wildlife Refuge (2 reviews)
    - See If You Can Spot The Lark And Vesper Sparrows!
Monday: 7:30 AM - 4:00 PM Spent 1-2 hours Nature & Wildlife Areas
This May my wife and I were able to travel to the refuge and we loved what we saw. This NWR is located in south central North Dakota near the small town of Moffit. It was established to provide sanctuary and habitat for migratory birds that use the Central Flyway. We walked many of the roads and saw several small animals and a great many birds. Walking slowly will give you many fabulous photo opportunities. We enjoyed interacting with the refuge staff as we got our "Blue Goose Passport" book stamped at the visitor center. The refuge also offers fishing, hunting and many great photographic opportunities. Come and bring your family (especially children), binoculars, camera and see what this region of North Dakota has to offer. This is a beautiful refuge to visit. The incredible amount of wildlife is your's to behold. See more..
  11. 3.5 Lostwood National WIldlife Refuge (2 reviews)
    - Great natural area for a drive or hike
    Nature & Wildlife Areas
This park has a single dirt road through plains, meadows, wetlands, prairie grasslands. There are a few interpretive signs along the way. There are lots of birds and wildlife to see along the drive. There is a scouting blind halfway along the route to observe birds from. Quite and serene - lots of kettle lakes along the road.
