    - Scenic
    Hiking Trails
This was something different! We walk every day, and here we saw some beautiful sights even though they are still cleaning up from the devestating flood, they are working so hard to get this and the zoo going! We saw two types of turtles in the river, cranes, geese and several types of ducks, herons and schools of fish, met some very nice local people who shared their stories. A very pleasurable experience, thank you North Dakota, will be back next year! See more..
  5. 5.0 Boicourt Overlook Trail (14 reviews)
    - How did that sidewalk get there?
Spent < 1 hour Hiking Trails
    Boicourt Overlook Trail image
The trail is listed as 0.3 miles, 15 minutes. Maybe they are measuring to the end of the new concrete sidewalk (or maybe *from* the end), but the narrow dirt trail goes farther, culminating on a narrow ridge with a stunning panoramic view of a spectacular valley landscape. I would not advise small children or anyone unsteady on his feet to go to the end as a fall or misstep could easily be fatal. The round trip from the car took me 30 minutes. See more..
  6. 5.0 Wind Canyon Trail (10 reviews)
    - Small risk with great rewards!

A pretty gentle hike from the parking lot. The trail takes you to the riverside, then to the top of the hill, then back to the parking lot, offering unparalleled views of the North Dakota grasslands. Absolutely not hard of a trail and it rewards you an absolute gem of a view. When we visited, there was also a bison resting at the butte opposite the trail and that was a cool sight to see. Took the grandkids here. We have 111 hard back Louis L'Amour books at home and just had to visit this place. Kids lived the town and I enjoyed visiting the writer's shack where he wrote his books. Good bit of history about the man in the shack as well. See more..

This is actually a horse camp so you wake to horses neighing. It’s on a bluff overlooking the river and quite pretty. They have wonderful clean showers and pit toilets- so it’s also cheaper. Everything in Medora was taken and this was wide open. Yes you had to travel to get to Theodore Roosevelt National Park but in this part of the country you must travel. The only downside was you could hear the flames from the oil wells. See more..

If you want a really peaceful and beautiful view of the valley floor and surrounding area take the time and do this short 1.2-mile hike. You basically walk through the prairie area most all the way. There is some uphill and on a hot day, I could see where this could be tough. But if you like some adventure and are up for a shot hike take the time. We sat on the overlook for a while after getting there and no one else was around. It was very peaceful and the views are amazing. The trail is well marked and even has 10th of mile markers most of the way. Definitely do this hike in the park . See more..

  14. 5.0 Jones Creek Trail (1 review)
    - Interesting hiking trail that goes through a prairie dog town
    Hiking Trails
This was one of our favorite hikes in TRNP-South Unit. Both of its trailheads are located on the main road through the park and have a good amount of parking available. We started on the far trailhead. The trail partially follows along a creek bed and we saw a little snake there. We also saw lots of mountain bluebirds and, since the trail goes through a prairie dog town, we got to see lots of prairie dogs up close. It's a longer trail but it wasn't particularly strenuous. There is no shade though, so I wouldn't hike this in the heat of the day in the summer. One final thing, we caught a glimpse of a mountain lion crossing the road not far from that trailhead so I guess you should keep your eyes peeled as you hike. You might get lucky too. See more..
