  11. 4.5 Fort Abercrombie State Historic Site (27 reviews)
    - Following our Great Great Grandfather’s Journey.
Monday: 9:00 AM - 5:00 PM Historic Sites • History Museums
Fort Abercrombie State Historic Site image
When the Red River Valley was the western frontier, Fort Abercrombie was the gateway to the West and the spearpoint of the army’s advance into the northern plains. The original guardhouse and the reconstructed blockhouses and stockade attest to the bloody conflict that spilled into the Dakotas from Minnesota in 1862. During this conflict Fort Abercrombie was besieged by Dakota warriors for almost six weeks. After the fort was abandoned in 1877, fort buildings were sold and removed from the site. A Works Progress Administration (WPA) project in 1939-1940 reconstructed three blockhouses and the stockade and returned the original military guardhouse to the site. Major portions of the WPA project have been refurbished and the site reinterpreted. See more..

Grand Forks County Historical Society Myra Museum image
My husband and I arrived at the official closing of the museum, but we walked around the grounds for free. There are plenty of plaques that explain what you are looking at for each of the buildings. We tried to peer in some of the windows, without much luck. haha I'd like to go back when it was open. Note: It is free just to walk around, without the tour. One of the buildings is the oldest building in Grand Forks. It is a log building that once served as the Post Office. There are period homes, furnished from each particular time frame. Nicely kept grounds. Fantastic picture taking opportunities. Picnic area and gazebo in front of the buildings. See more..

Set on the Main Street, across from the whirligig cafe, this donation only (generosity is rewarded here) museum is jam-packed with treasures from a bygone era. Encompassing multiple buildings, you can observe the way of life in small town America as it used to be: family life, post office, church, farm, barbershop—to just name a few. Pleasant volunteer staff and careful curation throughout the museum makes this a true hidden gem. See more..

  20. 4.0 Shimmin-Tveit Museum (2 reviews)
    - Hidden Storehouse
    Spent 1-2 hours History Museums
It's not that the Shimmin-Tveit Museum itself is hidden--it's in plain sight on the main drag of Forbes ND, housed in a re-purposed church building. It's just that Shimmin itself is off the beaten path, at the end of the paved road, tucked under the east face of the Missouri Coteau. The museum is open by appointment, but worth the trouble, if you're into grassroots history. The collection seems to have originated largely with the families of its two namesake-founders. It has an extra layer of significance in that both Shimmin and Tveit were early settlers who acquired early interest in the events of the Dakota War, specifically the engagement at Whitestone Hill, on the Coteau nearby. The museum in Forbes became the unofficial headquarters for local interest in Whitestone Hill and offers quite a selection of images and artifacts devoted to its memory. See more..
