Keelboat park sits along the banks and a great place to enjoy watching the river. See more..
  2. 3.5 Keelboat Park (48 reviews)
    - Nice place to see a piece of American History
Spent < 1 hour Bodies of Water • Biking Trails • Parks
    Keelboat Park image
Keelboats were an important means of transportation in this part of the Missouri River. They carried goods and people along and across the river. The park has an authentic Keelboat that kids can climb on and which gives you a picture of what these boats were like. Great view of the river from here and great place to watch people enjoying themselves along the river. See more..
  3. 4.0 Devils Lake (34 reviews)
    - Fishing trip

    Devils Lake image
the fishing on Devil's Lake is plentiful, we caught record fish . The people there are very courteous and friendly. They have plenty of restaurants, gas stations , grocery stores and bait shops with guides. The only thing we could not find was gift shops to purchase memorabilia from the trip and gifts for the grand kids, very disappointed. As famous as Devil's lake is you would think they would have gift shops for tourists. See more..

    - Old Settlers Monument at Lake Hoskins
    Bodies of Water
    Lake Hoskins image
There are other reasons for visiting Lake Hoskins, but what I love about the place is the forgotten historical monument located on its south shore, alongside Highway 11. This is the Hoskins Old Settlers Monument. It is in the middle of German-Russian Country, but the monument shows that the earliest settlers, in fact, were not necessarily German-Russians, but included many Anglo-Americans (a common pattern across the plains - Anglos arriving early, ethnic immigrants then supplanting them on the land). The monument, too, commemorates the old settler picnics that used to be an annual event at Hoskins. The monument is pretty rough as to aesthetic considerations, but you have to love its intent and its historical impulse: to record the early families, their names incised into rocks in the cairn, so they will not be forgotten. I'm here working from out of state and me and roommate went out to cast a few lines not expecting to really catch much be we ended up catching over 30 bullhead catfish. We released them all of course but it got to the point where it was more of a hassle than a pleasure 5o real them in and release them. Would recommend the small bay next to the beach. They bite anything with a worm on it See more..

Upper Souris National Wildlife Refuge image
I found the Upper Souris National Wildlife refuge by chance, driving north along ND-28. I’m very glad I did. The lake was very beautiful and incredibly peaceful. For the time that I was there (about an hour) I didn’t see a single soul. Definitely worth seeing if you’re looking for peace and quiet, off the grid. See more..

  9. 3.0 Lake Ilo National Wildlife Refuge (3 reviews)
    - Serene refuge, a good place for bird watching
Spent 1-2 hours Bodies of Water • Nature & Wildlife Areas
This nature area was right off highway 200 and was a perfect stop for our tail-gate picnic. We found the refuge to be wonderfully maintained, with several natural areas for viewing water fowl and other wildlife. As another reviewer mentioned, we agree that the refuge was peaceful. Although the landscape in other areas of the county were dotted with fixtures from the current oil boom, we found the refuge to be serene and picturesque. See more..
  10. 5.0 Little Missouri River (2 reviews)
    - The Instrument that Shapes TRNP

    Little Missouri River image
Theodore Roosevelt National Park and the North Dakota badlands owe much of their beauty and existence to the Little Missouri River. While the river is both a part of the North and South Units, I have placed in the North Unit because here it is so visibly evident in the creating the beauty of the North Unit canyon. For me the North Unit is so much prettier and amazing. Nearly every pullover and attraction of the North Unit is within view of the river. Its twists and turns are every bit as important and the the colors of layered sediment in the badlands. You do get to cross it on Hwy 85 travelling between the units. However, if I get back, I'd really like to kayak it. Either way, its importance to the park is the instrument of its creation. See more..
  11. 4.5 Crown Butte Lake (2 reviews)
    - Quaint, Quiet and Relaxing!
    Bodies of Water
    Crown Butte Lake image
Pretty little area around a small lake. There were a couple of boats out (small ones) and a paddleboat. A woman and a young man were fishing from a fishing dock and had been catching bluegills this morning. A great blue heron flew in and stood on a rock on the shoreline for a spell. I’m glad we took the time to drive out. Bring a lawn chair if you want to sit near the water or enjoy one of the picnic tables provided. There are picnic-area-type restrooms. Nice, quiet little area where you can let your worries melt away. See more..
