    Beautiful Park
Definitely stop here to enjoy the park grounds and the history of the area. The park was very peaceful and the barracks were refurbished and so clean! Everything was displayed perfectly and looked like the men were still living there! Very well done! Really liked the historical posters that were hung throughout the area to give information on various soldiers. We did not go inside Custers House cause they had a tour on appointment- but the outside was nicely maintained. Next we headed to the Native American village replicas and that was also quite interesting. Learned a lot about their homes and how they lived in the area. Made it to the Forts that were out in the open prairie fields. Had some great views from the top of the forts where you could see much of Mandan all the way to Bismarck! Finally stopped at the museum where they had many artifacts on display too! This park had so many historical and natural areas to explore- really enjoyed our afternoon here. Also nice to have a gift shop and coffee cafe to get refreshments. The ranger told us that we could come and go as often as we liked because our admission was good for the entire day- really good deal!

    Very interesting historical perspective
It's $7 per car to enter the park and then you buy tickets for the tours of the historic areas - $8 per person. The tours for the Custer House are every hour on the hour, but there is no noon tour and the tours for the On A Slant village are at 10am, noon, 2pm and 4pm, so you have to plan a little bit to maximize your time in the park. The guided tour of the village is about 30 minutes long and is very interesting. You get to go in the houses and learn all about the lives of the Mandan and it is fascinating. There is also a small, but very informative, museum about the Mandan. Then, there is the Custer House tour, which is led by a docent in period costume (and character.) That tour is about 45 minutes. It's a very nice house and learning the history of Custer and his wife was interesting. You can walk between the Custer House and the Mandan village, as it's only about 15 minutes, or it's a very short drive. You can also go to the barracks and the stables around the fort, although there isn't as much to see there. Make sure to drive up to the block houses, which look like huge lighthouses on top of the hill. You get a great view of the surrounding countryside and the river. It's a really nice park and having the super interesting historical places from different time periods made it really educational. If you are camping, it seems like there is a lot to do there.
