We actually hiked all the way from purple mountain peak to this mausoleum; about a 2km hike. Interesting hike. This mausoleum is beautiful. No photography allowed inside the mausoleum but you can capture a pic or 2 from the outside of the main entrance, guards are ok with that! Saw a man flying his drone in the garden beside the mausoleum too. There’s drink/snack stalls everywhere and one by the mausoleum too so dont worry if you need a drink.See more..
The exhibit is huge, with lots of information about the history at the time and events leading up to the Nanjing massacre. Highly recommend visiting to learn about the history of Nanjing. It was easy to get in - the guides were very helpful and helped us reserve a time slot etc on the Chinese app.See more..
4.0Zhouzhuang Water Town(1.047 reviews) - Zhouzhuang Versus Tongli As #1 Water Town In China Historic Sites • Neighborhoods
Zhouzhuang calls itself the #1 water town in China and millions agree with them but what about Tongl, another water town, not far away? Zhouzhuang is more developed, has more decorations, more shops, perhaps, but Tongli has more local people living right there, so it feels more real. The point is, really, there are several amazingly beautiful water cities in this region. Which one is number one? Explore them and decide for yourself. We took a gondola ride in both places, found great little hotels in both of them, and I took 1,000 pictures in each of them.See more..
4.5Tongli Town(920 reviews) - Come early to avoid the crowds Thursday: 7:30 AM - 5:30 PM Historic Sites
We took a 9 am train on a Saturday from Shanghai to Suzhou, takes 25 min and then roughly an hour by taxi or subway to get to Tongli Watertown entrance. There is also a few gardens which together with the bigger ones in Suzhou belong to the UNESCO World heritage ensemble. Watertown is beautiful, plan for 4 hours which is plenty of time to take pics, have a nice lunch in one of the many cafes and restaurants or just enjoy the scenery. See more..
4.5The Lingering Garden(840 reviews) - The best of Suzhou’s gardens Thursday: 7:30 AM - 5:00 PM Spent 1-2 hours Historic Sites • Points of Interest & Landmarks • Gardens
A Brief Description of the Lingering Garden Located at the outer side of the Chang Gate and built in the 21st year of the reign of Wanli under the Ming Dynasty (AD 1593), the Lingering Garden is reputed to be one of the four most famous gardens of China. In 1961 it was listed from the very first as cultural relics of national importance. Since 1997 it has been inscribed on the World Cultural Heritage List. The Lingering Garden, covering 23,310 sq.m., is divided into the middle, eastern, western and northern parts. The middle part features fascinating landscapes and waterscapes. The eastern part is noted for its architectural beauties and limestone rockeries. The northern part is famed for its beautiful bonsai garden. And the western part boasts the mountain forest scenery and the delights of wilderness. Celebrated for its superb handling of architectural space and spatial relations, the Lingering Garden serves as a fine specimen of ancient Chinese garden and landscape design and reputably tops all the well-known gardens in Suzhou. The Lingering Garden provides English tour guide for free every hour since 2017. You can also choose to pay for a professional English guide with different guiding route or a guiding machine. Hope that during your short stay here, you can not only satisfy your eyes, but also experience the real Chinese culture and have a better understanding of our philosophy.See more..
4.5Xiaoling Tomb of Ming Dynasty(480 reviews) - Unesco World Heritage Site Thursday: 7:00 AM - 8:00 PM Historic Sites • Ancient Ruins • Historic Walking Areas • Cemeteries
There is a lot to see and explore on Purple Mountain (Sun Yat Sen Memorial etc.) and this tomb while UNESCO Site fairly common if you have been to other temples. Well maintained, peaceful and not busy when we were there. You learn about the cultural significance and background and I recommend to spend at least half a day exploring the entire area. Well worth it!See more..
4.5Nanjing City Wall (Ming City Wall)(476 reviews) - Impressive architecture and piece of history Thursday: 12:00 AM - 11:59 PM Historic Sites

4.5Jiming Temple(280 reviews) - A small serene bouddhist temple Thursday: 7:30 AM - 5:00 PM Historic Sites
Visited on a rainy day so not crowded with visitors. The Jiming temple location enjoys a little hight over a section of the ancient city wall and Xianwu lake. It is relatively simple and small. It has a feeling of visiting Chinese temples in the 80's and 90's. Cherry blossom and others have just started in the neighborhood, the scenery and colors should be beautiful to watch by the end of March.See more..
4.0Qin Huai River(245 reviews) - Loved Walking Around at Night Thursday: 12:00 AM - 11:59 PM Historic Sites • Bodies of Water • Neighborhoods
We went in late March 2021 and they had many new light displays set up. It is very busy near the shops and Confucious Temple areas but just past this it is nice. Many boats traverse the river for the displays but we enjoyed just walking around the river area so that we could take our time seeing it all. Most of the area is free to walk around but if you like lanterns and light displays we would recommend checking out Bailuzhou Park nearby. Closest metro is Confucious Temple Station and I would recommend going in the evening. Shops start to close around 9:00 pm and they kept the lights on until around 10:00 pm on a Monday evening when we went.See more..
4.0Mt Huaguoshan(183 reviews) - Do a workout :) Thursday: 7:00 AM - 9:30 PM Historic Sites • Bodies of Water • Mountains
The title describes it exactly. My fitness app shown after the visit 69 floors walked. And this really the stairs only. So, make sure you are in good condition ;) To the scenic self: We drove up the mountain by car from the back side. A really small path through the rocks of this mountain. If you have a car, I suggest this way. Otherwise you can take a bus (20yuan) for uphill. There are some interesting spots on this mountain. Like a waterfall cave, strange rock formations, temples and all over are monkeys. The monkeys are cheeky, naughty and they try take all of you what you don't hide. There are toilets enough, snacks and water (5rmb/bottle) everywhere. You should calculate 4 hours to step to each scenic point. On the bus stop on the temple you can book a downhill on tube boat. (no idea about the price).... Enjoy your day there :) See more..

A bucket list experience. The pits are about a 10 mins walk from the car park but this is easy and pleasant walking with easy access for wheelchair users. It was a cold but pleasant day. Would not like to visit in the summer months as there is very little shade. Was expecting crowds of people but was pleased to find this was not the case. The warriors are standing proud and ready to meet the visitors. there is a small area where you can stand and watch the renovations of this proud army taking place.See more..

4.0Qiandeng Ancient Town(49 reviews) - Small and cute Thursday: 8:00 AM - 5:00 PM Historic Sites • Points of Interest & Landmarks • Architectural Buildings
As far as Chinese attractions go, this is a nice one: it's old and has a nice atmosphere. As far as water towns go, it is tiny: just a few canals that cross each other. There are shops and wedding picture businesses but not that many restaurants of cafes so it's really not for hanging out. You can see every corner of the place in just a few hours. The temple area is impressive. Qiandeng is not nearly as crowded as other water towns in the area.See more..

4.5Shaxi Ancient Town(42 reviews) - Ancient town with forgotten past Thursday: 12:00 AM - 11:59 PM Historic Sites
Recommend to see this town before it gets too commercialized. This historic town was an important part of the tea horse road. The old theatre in the middle of the town and a visit to the Ouyang family home are a must. The Ouyang family made their fortune as inn keepers in the early days and the descendants still live there. For 10 rmb per person the matriarch would be happy to give you a tour of the family courtyard home which is very much in the original condition.See more..

We visited here on a tour in August 2019. The cruise down the canal was relaxing and interesting. We were able to move to the front of the boat to get better photos throughout the cruise. There were lanterns along the banks of the canal and glimpses into the lifestyle of the locals in the area. We were unable to see the full length of the canal due to a typhoon and change of itinerary, but I would recommend taking a tour down this canal for the serenity and charm.See more..

This is the hometown of Xiang Yu (232–202 BC), a famous Chinese warlord who fought against the Qin dynasty. In his early life he stated that he was not interested in mastering the use of a sword, as he wished to be a master of winning wars, not defeating single opponents one at a time. 4.0Kouan Carved Building Scenic Area(3 reviews) - Fun ancient town in Gaogang district, Taizhou Thursday: 8:00 AM - 5:00 PM Historic Sites • Architectural Buildings
I literally only visited this place because I live in Gaogang district, and I have seen a sign telling me to go there. I finally had a boring weekend so I went to check it out. I was pleasantly surprised with all that there was to do there. The Carved mansion itself is 40RMB to visit, but for 60RMB you can visit all the museums as well. Note that all the Museums are in Chinese so that might be a reason to not go in. The carved mansion area was pretty big with amazing gardens and really cool architecture. You actually have the ability to go into the house and explore both floors. The place is mostly furnished so you can get a good Idea about how the people lived. If you are in the area and you have time to spare I would put this on the list of things to see.See more..
