There is also a nice little street on old-style houses just to the North-East side of the gate which is worth a 10-minute walk around. I got here by going to Zhonghuamen （中华门）metro station on line 1, took exit 1, walked North until I had crossed the river, then it is just on the right. As far as Chinese attractions go, this is a nice one: it's old and has a nice atmosphere. As far as water towns go, it is tiny: just a few canals that cross each other. There are shops and wedding picture businesses but not that many restaurants of cafes so it's really not for hanging out. You can see every corner of the place in just a few hours. The temple area is impressive. Qiandeng is not nearly as crowded as other water towns in the area.See more..

A pagoda dated back to Tang dynasty, situated in the middle of the road. The original temple was reconstructed and ruined several times but the pagoda survived. A story related with the temple is "bell after meal (饭后钟)." A young and poor intellect in Tang dynasty named Wang Bo (王播) used to feed himself on the temple meals. The monks usually used the bell to summon people to meal but once they finished meal first and then rang the bell to embarrass Wang who came late for the meal on hearing the bell. Wang later became a high official and lived a greedy life until he died of some terminal disease.See more..

Xue’s Garden was built in Wuxi in the late Qing Dynasty. The owner was Mr. Xue, he was the ambassador to Britain, France, Italy and Belgium. When we visited this luxurious mansion, I can see the rational layout, fine carving of each room; even the lanterns in main hall (for receiving guest) or family living room are different. The mansion has over 100 rooms and a few gardens. The guide told us Mr. Xue passed away before he could enjoy this place. On the day we went it was not packed with tourists. I literally only visited this place because I live in Gaogang district, and I have seen a sign telling me to go there. I finally had a boring weekend so I went to check it out. I was pleasantly surprised with all that there was to do there. The Carved mansion itself is 40RMB to visit, but for 60RMB you can visit all the museums as well. Note that all the Museums are in Chinese so that might be a reason to not go in. The carved mansion area was pretty big with amazing gardens and really cool architecture. You actually have the ability to go into the house and explore both floors. The place is mostly furnished so you can get a good Idea about how the people lived. If you are in the area and you have time to spare I would put this on the list of things to see.See more..

The Lu Family's Salt Merchant House is a combination of attraction and restaurant. As restaurant it is open 3 times per day and between those it is open as an attraction. Of course, the visitor could see it as an attraction and have look in a mansion of a wealthy family of salt merchants with yards, gardens, alleys, halls etc and have an idea about the beauty of traditional Chinese Architecture but it is better to 'see' it as a restaurant with the name "Lu Shi Gu Zhai". It is best to visit it during dinner time when it is decorated with the lit red lanterns and taste some local dishes of Jiangsu Province. Overall it is recommended but have in mind that communication for the ones who do not speak Chinese might have some problems.See more..

It wasn't easy to get there from the center of Tai Cang.I took local bus 203 to the very end.If you get off right before you reach the bridge in Fu qiao village it is only about a half hour walk east towards where the ships are being loaded.Beware of coming back late.I left at 4:30pm and never did get a bus back.Instead I shared a car ride back with two other Chinese business men.The ride on the bus takes about an hour and passes two impressive temples.One mentioned here,The Hai Tian Temple.Zheng He was the commander of a group of ships that may have gone to America 70 years before Columbus.There is a book called 1421 that chronicles his voyages and provides an interesting contrast to the western stuff we were fed in school.Cost is now 30 yuan.See more..
