Zhonghua Gate (Zhonghuamen Castle), Jiangsu, China

4.0 (173 reviews) Wednesday: 8:00 AM - 9:00 PM Spent Ranking #15 in Nanjing Architectural Buildings

Grand and impressive

Costs 50 RMB per person to get in, but it is worth it. You can go on top of the gate and walk along the city wall for quite a distance of you want to. There is also a nice little street on old-style houses just to the North-East side of the gate which is worth a 10-minute walk around. I got here by going to Zhonghuamen (中华门)metro station on line 1, took exit 1, walked North until I had crossed the river, then it is just on the right. Takes 10-15 minutes to walk there from the metro. Yuhuatai (雨花台)is also close by, so you could combine a visit to both of these.

    Zhong Hua Men Castle
The Great Wall of Nanjing!. Nothing less spectacular than the Great Wall of China. This wall is more than 600 years old and stretches for more than 33 km. Billions of bricks have been used in this project which took 21 years to complete. You will be surprised to know that each brick weighs between 15 to 20 Kg. Each brick has an inscription giving details of where it was manufactured, and who were responsible. This was to guarantee the quality of workmanship. The Main entrance is spectacular. It has three arches before we enter into the main castle. There are more than 8 caves on the ground level where hundreds of soldiers could be housed with large storage areas for grain in case of war. There are similar caves on the upper level too which are now being used as exhibition rooms that display the bricks used in the construction, and some items of the age old era. On either side of the castle, there are wide steps that take you to the very top of the castle. The topmost portion is a wide and spacious parapet where people enjoy flying kites. Two cannons of the olden days are present here. It is also said that radium was used in the ammunition for these cannons. The place is so serene and has a beautiful view of the city from the wall top. There is an entrance fee of 34 RMB but is worth it.
