We saw the Purple Mountains while on a day tour of Nanjing. It was quite busy the day we visited as it was the last day of the Plum Blossom Festival and many people were taking photos. The title describes it exactly. My fitness app shown after the visit 69 floors walked. And this really the stairs only. So, make sure you are in good condition ;) To the scenic self: We drove up the mountain by car from the back side. A really small path through the rocks of this mountain. If you have a car, I suggest this way. Otherwise you can take a bus (20yuan) for uphill. There are some interesting spots on this mountain. Like a waterfall cave, strange rock formations, temples and all over are monkeys. The monkeys are cheeky, naughty and they try take all of you what you don't hide. There are toilets enough, snacks and water (5rmb/bottle) everywhere. You should calculate 4 hours to step to each scenic point. On the bus stop on the temple you can book a downhill on tube boat. In Nantong itself, this is the best daytime attraction. (In the evening, try a boat ride on the canal and see the lights.) There are many steps to the top of the "mountain", quite steep. Very good exercise to walk up. Good views of Nantong city, and also out to the water where you can see the ships. Go on a day when the air quality is not too unhealthy, since you will be breathing heavy from the walk up, and will want clear views from the observation decks. The temple is reasonably nice, though you can't get very good pictures of it from the top because you will be very close and looking straight up. But inside there were monks dressed in their gold colored robes, keeping a steady rhythm on a drum while people kneeled for a prayer. At the bottom of the mountain, there is an area with a creek and also a large statue of a wolf that people were climbing up onto to get pictures taken.See more..

We heard about these mountains from a Feng Shui consultant who says that these mountains have good Feng Shui. Since we were in Nanjing, we decided to make the trip to visit these mountains. We took as taxi from Nanjing to Maoshan - 1.5 hours drive. These mountains have a 2500 year history and is considered as the mountains where Taoism flourished in the old days. There an element of the black arts here in the past. Today there are temple complexes for visiting and prayers. From the main entrance, you can buy tickets for the visit and also book a guide - highly recommended although I don't think they have any English speaking guides. There will be shuffle vans taking visitors to various parts of the mountain notably the more famous ones being the Lao Tze Holden statue and the highest peak with a temple meant for prayers. It is said that the mountains represent a dragon with the highest peak where there is a temple for prayers and the dragon body ends where the Lao Tze statue is located. Not many foreign tourists visit this place. It is only somewhat interesting for someone who values Taoism and understands the history of it or wants to do a pilgrimage to the holy mountain of Taoism. A Gem in the middle of crazy....This is a massive park that you can really take your time and spend all day with a picnic or head in to on your lunch break for 20 minutes for some down time. Great big manicured gardens and paving meets winding paths and natural areas to the you to different areas of the park. You can walk easily or take wheel chairs in most areas. you can also hire bikes for a very reasonable fee. you can even do random bikes if you are keen. Santai mountain resort is an amazing place to spend one whole day. It's very close to Suqian city center. Santai mountain park has a beautiful flower fields that bloom at any time of the year, of course especially in the summer time. In the middle of the park/mountain is a huge open space concert hall.
