Wolf Mountain, Jiangsu, China

Good exercise, nice views

In Nantong itself, this is the best daytime attraction. (In the evening, try a boat ride on the canal and see the lights.) There are many steps to the top of the "mountain", quite steep. Very good exercise to walk up. Good views of Nantong city, and also out to the water where you can see the ships. Go on a day when the air quality is not too unhealthy, since you will be breathing heavy from the walk up, and will want clear views from the observation decks. The temple is reasonably nice, though you can't get very good pictures of it from the top because you will be very close and looking straight up. But inside there were monks dressed in their gold colored robes, keeping a steady rhythm on a drum while people kneeled for a prayer. At the bottom of the mountain, there is an area with a creek and also a large statue of a wolf that people were climbing up onto to get pictures taken.

    Short but Great Hike
I enjoyed the hike and the scenery. Was worth the trip, below are my pros and cons: Pros: - Easy Hike - Great view of the city from the top - Lots of fun history Cons - Not the most spectacular temple to see in all of China but still fun.

    Pretty, crowded, enjoyable, crowded, loud
The mountain is easy to hike up as all paths are paved. There are two different trams that cost 50 RMB that you can take up and down the mountainside. The top of the mountain features a old temple with beautiful Buddhist displays and a fantastic view of the bay and port showing all the large ships coming and going from the city. The monks there were not very social and did not seem to be happy overall. On the lower levels of the mountain, you can ride small paddleboats for 25 RMB and buy lots of incense to burn in the temples along with snacks and other small children's toys. Immediately outside parks are many small restaurants and more places to buy incense. As you enter the park from the main entrance, most people immediately turn left and follow the traditional path up the mountain. However, if you turn to the right, there is a lovely small garden area that is much quieter and it offers a calmer way up the mountain side, though admittedly with less to see. You can also take one of the two trams from here, and avoid the hustle and bustle and 50 seemingly identical shops along the popular pathway.
