The exhibit is huge, with lots of information about the history at the time and events leading up to the Nanjing massacre. Highly recommend visiting to learn about the history of Nanjing. It was easy to get in - the guides were very helpful and helped us reserve a time slot etc on the Chinese app. See more..

Worth the time & efforts to visit the Nanjing Museum. It is free entry for visitors. We went to the first building’s service desk to register / collect some leaflets. There are at least 3 main buildings. They are built separately. Each houses different artifacts & exhibits. Very interesting ones would be the building that housed the dinosaurs, the skeletons of the dead which you can see their social status just by looking at their burial. Their monetary systems, their age of pottery, the ancient warriors & commoners’ attires & sculptures & etc. Another building houses paintings & statues. Wooden carvings were intricate & were detailing life. Security guards were flexible, as long as you do not speak loudly. Cameras are allowed. We had a good 2-hour+ quick walk. At certain levels we couldn’t enter as they were meant only for invited guests. There are many washrooms, pretty clean. It’s a must-go! See more..

  4. 4.0 Yangzhou Eight Weird Memorial Hall (32 reviews)
    - see the canal

If you are heading for Nanjing, you might as well visit Yangzhou where the famed Yangzhou fried rice got its name but be warned, fried rice with the same name may taste better; actualy the name does not actually suggest the dish actually came from this city. The city, like Xiaoqing and Zhengjiang, is famed for the canal and the lake there. As well, see the landscaped gardens such as He Yuan ( Garden of Mr. He). You do not need to go to Hangzhou or Suzhou to see such landscaped gardens. To tour the city, you could join a tour; often visitors are touted into a 'trip' by locals who claim you do not need to pay for the entrance fee. My suggestion is Honesty is the best policy; pay for the entrance fee and travel trouble free and with peace of mind. See more..
  5. 4.5 John-Rabe House (29 reviews)
    - A True Humanitarian

    John-Rabe House image
The John Rabe House is a genuinely pleasant attraction in the bustling city of Nanjing. The house itself has been renovated and stands out from the buildings surrounding it. For those interested in the Nanjing massacre it is a must-see! John Rabe was an amazing man who risked his life to save those around him. Schindler saved over a 1000 Jews, but Rabe saved over 250,000 Chinese from the Japanese invaders. It is a shame that only so few people have heard of him... See more..

  7. 3.5 Maoshan Mountain New Fourth Army Memorial Hall (11 reviews)
    - Really interesting New China site
Wednesday: 9:00 AM - 5:00 PM History Museums
Maoshan Mountain New Fourth Army Memorial Hall image
I’m prompted to write this review as I don’t see any other English language reviews. If you’re in Zhenjiang area or perhaps visiting Maoshan to see the Taoist temple on Maoshan, don’t forget to also visit the museum for the N4A, New Fourth Army of the 1937 period of Sino Japanese war. The museum has a wealth of pictures and histories, mostly in Chinese, but enough in English to still keep up with the story of the founding of the N4A. It takes about 30 minutes to tour the museum and then walk to the nearby memorial of the martyrs which is about 200 meters towards the base of Maoshan. You won’t miss it as it’s pretty big. If you happen to time your visit when they set off fireworks at the memorial, you will experience the odd audio sensation of the echo created by the steps of the memorial. Which sounds like a bugler making a short bugle call. Very interesting and of course there’s a local legend as well as a 16 year of N4A bugler from Maoshan was killed fighting the Japanese in the woods behind the memorial. See more..

    At Hubushan Ancient Dwellings image
It's huge. I believe there are 3 or 4 family homes linked together that you can visit on one ticket, but I barely covered 2 of them. Note that only the dwellings are open for visit - Ximatai which is nearby is closed for renovation. I was there actually to visit Ximatai but finding it closed decided to visit the dwellings without high expectations It turned out to be fascinating. However, it may be difficult to understand if you do not read Mandarin and do not have a guide. See more..

Su Zhong Seven Battle Memorial image
See more..

See more..
