Originally constructed under Emperor Zhezong of the Song. He was the Emperor from 1085 to 1100, being from his age of 9 to his passing at the age of 23. Thus possibly, it was built at the wishes of his grandmother, who appointed official to run the empire for the young Emperor. We enjoyed viewing the architecture of the ancient structures, the Ip Man museum, a lion dance, and a kung fu performance. See more..

  6. 4.0 Kaiyuan Temple (49 reviews)
    - Chaozhou Oldest Temple
Friday: 8:00 AM - 6:00 PM Religious Sites
    Kaiyuan Temple image
We were visiting the nearby old town and visited this temple. The Kaiyuan Temple is one of the oldest Buddhist temple in Chaozhou. This temple was built in the Tang dynasty and has a history that is over 200 years. The diety Guan Yin "Goddest of Mercy", a white stone statue is at the temple's entrance. This is a huge temple with different halls. The temple was very well preserved and maintained. The walls of the temple have unique carvings and the ceilings were beautifully decorated with red lanterns. We left the temple after a quick tour of the temple, as it was crowded with local people and tourists praying and paying homage to the dieties and Buddhas. We also took the electric ricksaw tricylces that were stationed at the nearby arch to tour part of the old town's narrow streets lined with shops and old houses. A must-visit place for Buddhists and history buff! See more..

    - Excellent place for the weekend visit!
Friday: 7:00 AM - 7:00 PM Religious Sites • Geologic Formations
    Luofu Mountain image
Luofu Mountain is one of the famous Taoism pilgrimage sites. It's my first time there. I was impressed by how beautiful the site was and how nicely maintained it had been. The 1.8km cable lift was pretty long and good for sight seeing in a clear day. The vegetation on the mountain is so lush that the leaves seemed dripping "green". I imagine that, taking a weekend trip here from busy cities like Guangzhou or Shenzhen, must be very relaxing and meditating. See more..

  13. 3.5 Mazu Palace (12 reviews)
    - Vacation Trip
Friday: 12:00 AM - 11:59 PM Religious Sites
    Mazu Palace image
A fairly small temple comprising 2 separate section of beautifully decorated deities. They appears to be fairly new as the figurines are still clean and bright in colors. A normal temple would have been blacken by the burning incense. If temple is your thing, out the Mazu temple turn left and another left onto Waima Road . Just around 100m on the left you will see another bigger temple. You can miss it as there's a big wall with nine dragons just in front. See more..

Close to city with fresh air and nice walking paths (stairs). It's good exercise to walk whole way to the temple. Admission fee was 5RMB and walk made us sweating. Take you own towel, water bottle and snacks with you. There is no sellers on the way. But temple's small shops have nice gifts on reasonable price (even for tourists), no bargain. See more..

This temple is in my partners home town and I have been here on a number of occasions. This is my favorite temple to visit in China. Its very peaceful and there is so much to see. I especially love the pagoda and the view from the top and the temple with lots of colorful statues protruding from the wall. There's also a very nice hot spring close to the temple. I took my parents here during a 3 week tour of China and it was one of the highlights of their trip! Highly recommend spending a couple of days in Xinxing to visit the temple and hot springs! 18. 3.5 Cathedral of St. Victor (7 reviews)
    - Nice to see if you're in the neighbourhood
Friday: 8:00 AM - 5:30 PM Religious Sites
    Cathedral of St. Victor image
One of the few colonial buildings left over since the territory was ceded back to the Chinese by the French. It may not be the biggest, or most impressive building, but built in 1900, it's nice to see something survive though the turbulent times of the 20th century. There used to be another colonial church in town, but it was torn down by the Chinese when they refused to convert to a temporary make-shift factory. Whereass the care-takers of Saint Victor agreed, and enabled it to survive until it got the chance to revert back to its original function. The church is still fully functioning, and serves the local Christian community. The care-taker there is very friendly: he opened up the door after closing hours so we could visit and even invited us to join mass the next morning (we didn't go.... :-/). It is also close to the French Minister Department colomnial building so easy to visit both. See more..

Friday: 6:00 AM - 10:00 PM Religious Sites
    Longquan Rock Temple Complex image
Very nice place. Long way to climb but it is worth it. When you see full families with little children climbing all those stairs it gives you the motivation to go to the top (and then a long way down). Beautiful way, mountain, nature, passages between the rocks, beautiful temples. Great to o spend a nice afternoon. It is worth it if you are around. Not for people that cannot do a lot of wallking (up and down). See more..

Friday: 12:00 AM - 11:59 PM Religious Sites
    Jufeng Temple image
The temple is built in great traditional Chinese architecture so there lots to see in terms of architecture. However what makes this place interesting are the rock formation behind the temple. You probably could take at least half a day to wander amongst the formation. The formation are named, in Chinese. So those who understands will enjoy more. If not, just wander around and take in the scenery. Oh finally, bring mosquito repellent and umbrellas if you plan to visit during summer. See more..

I always loved the traditional or asian religious places, temples etc, so it was obvious that I will go there sooner or later. Took me 15 minutes to find it, the locals were helpful and they gave me always the right direction. The building is not big but I would not call it small. The statutes inside were huge and beautiful. The temple is a Buddhist temple in case I forgot to mention it. Later I will add some new pics. See more..

    - Quiet village with unusual architecture
Friday: 12:00 AM - 11:59 PM Religious Sites
If you have a free day in Guangzhou, you will not regret, if you spend it in Kaiping. Go around the tower and you will find many interesting angles for your photos. From Guangzhou bus goes for about two hours. Come not to the end station. Ask the driver "Kaiping"! If you do not see the free taxi at the exit of the bus terminal, then go inside the building and ask "Kaiping" !? )) For 300 yuan, I arranged with the driver to inspect the three main places. The trip takes 3-5 hours. Entrance is paid separately, it is inexpensive. See more..

Xian Imperial Ancestral Temple of Gaozhou image
Most travelers will fight crowds year round to enjoy many of China's ancestral treasures in major cities like Beijing and Shanghai, but if you are in Gaozhou City, near Maoming, this is one beautiful temple you can visit in almost solitary enjoyment. Richly appointed and created with the same care all temples in China are, you can visit and meditate on the gorgeous, intricate architecture, and even purchase Buddhist prayer items such as jade bracelets. During our visit we purchased (for 20 yuan) prayer messages to put in the temple - they stay for one year. Off the beaten track but still in a city - if you go, stay at the Letian Hotel, luxury at a fraction of the cost in the larger cities. See more..

I asked a local expat if there was an "old temple" in Yangjiang that I could photograph and this place was the only choice. It took us a while to find it, but when we finally got there it was in a great location near the river. The temple isn't large, but it has some interesting buildings. One of the trees was decorated with thousands of prayer ribbons. It's one of the more photographic cultural sites to visit in Yangjiang. Once you've see Duck Lake Park and the beach this is a nice break. See more..
  44. 4.0 Lotus Ancient Temple (1 review)
    - Lotus Temple under Lotus Mountain
    Religious Sites
Situated at the end of a slightly winding road in Lianhua Town, Chenghai district around Shatou, in Guangdong Province. In the entrance courtyard where our bus parked, there was a sign as follows " Built in Yuan Dynasty-1289 AD. Renovated several times with most recent renovation started in 1985". A (renovated) Bhudda statue can easily be spotted in the parking area. The temple itself is very minimalistic, as it's still under renovation. Close by there is a mountain resort with hot springs. Probably, it would be worth staying at the resort over night after visiting the temple and hiking up Lotus Mountain scenic area. However, few people in the area spoke standard Mandarin and knowing Guangdong hua would be helpful to a foreign tourist planning to visit alone. Enclosed with this short review is the picture of the 'area map' and a 'description of the temple'. Visited as part of a Chinese Tour group in the spring of 2013. See more..
