Travelling in Guangzhou is not so difficult except for some language problems until recently the GZ government has had an interpretation hotline(+8620960169), which can provide great service for public affairs and government services. I used several times taking taxi and asking for directions, the interpreters are quite professional. See more..

Two days ago, I tried to take the Shekou Ferry to the Hong Kong airport to catch my flight. I arrived at the ferry terminal 2 hrs and 15 minutes before my flight was scheduled to depart, but the ferry operator refused to sell me a ferry ticket! According to the ticket agent, the arilines have a rule that no passengers may board a ferry less than 2.5 hours prior to their flight departure. The ferry brochure says nothing about this, neither in English nor in Chinese. So I joined 3 other travelers in a mad taxi dash from Shekou Port on Shenzhen Port, where we caught a HK taxi to the airport. I missed my flight, and had to take a later one. If you want to take the ferry back to the airport, allow PLENTY of time. See more..

This exhibition hall traces thousands of years of history of Dongguan. It was very interesting, albeit not very interactive. We came here in a group and were assigned an English-speaking guide. Our guide was really patient and her English was very good and easy to understand, so we were able to learn a lot. I did feel like our tour was a bit rushed at times. There were many signs in English and I wanted to read them but had to keep moving to keep up with the guide. The displays are so beautiful and artistic; they were my favorite part of the exhibition. Some of the children in our group weren’t as entertained here because a lot of the displays are not interactive and don’t hold children’s attention for very long, but it was still a good experience for them to learn some history. A compact 3-story mini-museum in the middle of a well preserved historical avenue reincarnated into a pedestrian only commercial avenue. Museum entry level hails major historical figures from Zhongshan, a model of the old city as it stood in the 19th century, sections of old homes, shops, streets, boat, and dock. The second floor features a theme based exhibition which changes over time in the front section, and an introduction to the historical commercial nature of the city in the rear. The third floor is a permanent display of the four great companies in China at the turn of the 20th century, headquartered in Shanghai, created by returning (from Australia) natives of Zhongshan. At the center of the museum is a 3-floor high atrium, featuring the exterior facade of period Zhongshan architecture. Admission is free. Tour time, 30-60 minutes. Ok to be honest the museam was closed as it we were there on Monday. However it is in the old part of the city which is well worth a look. Shantou obviously was big in the early part of the 20th century and you can see street after street of what were in their day fine house and shops. However it appears that unlike other east coast cities shantou has had very little investment. The result is a decaying but strangely quaint old city area. I am not sure what will happen either it will slowly fall down and be cleared for redevelopment or maybe it will get a much needed make over but it will require a lot of work and money. See more..

The smell of soy sauce hit us as we got out of the car. Entry was only 20RMB per person. We went on a Monday afternoon and had the entire museum to ourselves, so we took our time looking around the 3 floors of the museum and viewing areas of the factory. The exhibitions show the history and both the traditional & modern process of manufacturing soy sauce. The only issue I had was that there was no English text on the exhibit information, which is my problem not theirs, anyway I had my wife translate/explain some things to me. Overall I was able to figure out what the exhibits were about, as everything is laid out in a logical way. At the end of the tour through the factory you come to a tasting area, the soy sauce ice cream is a must try and tastes better than it sounds. You also get a souvenir bottle of soy sauce from the ticket office as you leave. I would highly recommend this place if you want to do something different and a good way to fill in a hour or so. The town has clearly spent a lot of money developing the entire area around the park with this wonderful Hakka building as its centrepiece. It's a 270 year old building that used to house 200 families. Unfortunately, right next to this house is a commercial street and a block away there is this huge apartment complex being built that shows up in every shot. Call it poor planning? or corruption?, but they should have built this park with the Hakka house in the centre. See the photo of the poster without all the ugly commercial buildings around it.
