  2. 5.0 Acheron Springs (433 reviews)
    - Acheron Springs
Sunday: 12:00 AM - 11:59 PM Spent More than 3 hours Bodies of Water
    Acheron Springs image
If you can get here by taxi or hire car, go early - we arrived at 9:30 and there was literally less than a dozen people (By noon the place is very busy). You will need suitable shoes or cheap trainers, water to drink and a waterproof bag to keep your phone safe but be ready to take some pics. The water is cold but you will get used to it. I am 6' (1.82m) and can confirm that the water is not too deep. On the way upstream, there are two short deep sections and then, should you continue, you may have to climb a few rocks and once you turn around you will likely have to swim around 7 meters but the current will help. As a non-confident swimmer, the prospect was a little scary but if you can do it, there's a huge sense of achievement. See more..

Worth the out of the way drive to see the gorge and surrounding areas. Count on spending a day or two here, at least 4 to 6 hours. We were there in mid July where we were wonderfully refreshed by cooler days and even cooler evenings. The gorge is crisscrossed with small winding roads, and the drive to the pools See more..

    Drakolimni image
We scheduled our visit during lockdown, with a local guide Vasilis (from Saxonis Houses) who helped us a lot with arranging our full day trekking. The weather was great, views breathtaking and of course a very long walk! It took us approx. 5h getting to the lake and 4h returing to mikro papigo village. If you want to avoid a full day trek you can stay at Astaka refuge. We preferred returning to our privacy in Saxonis Houses (conveniently located in Papigo Village). Spring is the best time of the year to visit the lake. See more..
  11. 5.0 The Church of Panagia Parigoritissa (85 reviews)
    - A wonderful old church
    Churches & Cathedrals
The Church of Panagia Parigoritissa image
What a wonderful old church. Built in the 13th century, unlike many churches which get maintained and modernised over the centuries, this has retained much originality. The painted religious frescoes are missing in parts but those that remain are quite clear retaining colour and expression, these date from the end of the 17th and early 18th centuries. I like old churches that show their age, and this truly is an excellent example. See more..
  12. 5.0 Tree Chapel Saint Paissiou (75 reviews)
    - Ιερός τόπος
    Sunday: 12:00 AM - 11:59 PM Spent < 1 hour Religious Sites • Churches & Cathedrals
    Tree Chapel Saint Paissiou image
The hidden tree church of St. Paisios was built inside a burnt oak tree, following in the footsteps of St. Paisios, who in his youth passed through the area, going to the nearby village of Amarantos to perform carpentry work on local houses. a few meters after the junction for the village of Agia Varvara, next to the road to Amaranto. The tree had been internally destroyed and set on fire (bystanders set fire to heat, or to barbecue) and with the result that every year its condition deteriorates and is ready to collapse. The tree to be saved was shielded internally with stone from the area and turned into a tree. Externally there is a small bell while inside there is a recess where the visitor can light a candle, a candle, a picture of Christ and Our Lady and in the center the image of Saint Paisios flooded with tribes of pilgrims. In Greece there are very few similar churches - places of pilgrimage within a tree and arouse the interest of Greek and foreign visitors. Acheron River image
A great day out. We got there around 9.30am to beat the crowds and we had the river to ourselves. Water was freezing cold when you first go in but you soon got used to it. Jelly shoes are a must!! Walked up the river as far as we could- needed to swim in a couple of places, but the water was so fresh and clear, it was a wonderful experience. Highly recommend as a morning out. Had a coffee along the river at one of the many tavernas afterwards. See more..

    - Fabulous view across Parga

    Venetian Castle of Parga image
We had 50 minutes to fill between our ferry from Paxos arriving in Parga and our bus to the airport leaving. The castle is a steep but rewarding ten minute (max) walk up from the harbour. The views are absolutely spectacular so it is well worth the effort. Shortly after setting off back down the steps we happened upon a cafe serving freshly squeezed juices with the same incredible view. 50 minutes happily filled! See more..

Worth the trip. Very interesting. Well done, good English translation for most of the displays provided. Beautiful island. - Ancient Greece.

Nicopolis is an ancient city that was built on 31 B.C by Octavios after the batle of Aktio. If you translate it from Greek to English Nicopolis, means the city of victory. It is placed just outside the town of Preveza. It is great for someone that is interested in ancient history to visit that place. Also the museum that they recently built near the ancient city of Nicopolis is one of the most moderate and intresting musuems in Greece. See more..
  22. 4.5 Arta's Bridge (229 reviews)
    - Really beautiful
    Sunday: 12:00 AM - 11:59 PM Spent < 1 hour Bridges
    Arta's Bridge image
The Bridge of Arta is a stone bridge that crosses the Arachthos river in the west of the city of Arta in Greece. It has been rebuilt many times over the centuries, starting with Roman or perhaps older foundations; the current bridge is probably a 17th-century Ottoman construction. The folk ballad "The Bridge of Arta" tells a story of human sacrifice during its building. From the ballad, a number of Greek proverbs and customary expressions arose, associated with interminable delays, as in the text of the ballad: "All day they were building it, and in the night it would collapse." The Katogi Averoff winery is in Metsovo, a mountain village built some 1100 metres above sea-level. Its cellars can boast over 1200 oak barrels in which our red wines mature, while the winery shop offers rare and collectible bottles of wine for sale from its 1974 vintage on. A guided tour of the winery employs a range of audio-visual media to offer the visitor an original introduction to wine production and the history of the winery, and is rounded off with tastings of a selection of Katogi Averoff wines. Alonaki Fanariou Beach image
This beach is just unic! It's surrounded by cliffs and it's quite difficult to get ther. You must leave your vehicle on the top and go down to the beach ( no proper walk made) , but it definitely worth all the suffer. Waters a crystal clean and you have a view on a small rock Iceland in the middle , which you can actually reach by swimming! Perfect place for snorkelling!!! Advice : take your beach umbrella ( it's a wild beach and no sun umbrellas available there) , take some food as there are only small snacks and drinks available at the cafeteria van operating at this place. See more..

    - Excellent museum with a room devoted to the Dodoni site.
Sunday: 8:30 AM - 3:30 PM History Museums
    Archaeological Museum of Ioannina image
The collections of the Archaeological Museum of Ioannina are displayed in seven halls, the central aisle and three atria in a total surface of 1.200 square meters. Exhibits cover a wide time span from the first appearance of humans in Epirus during the Lower Paleolithic, 250.000 years ago, to late antiquity in late Roman times (3rd century AD). Great emphasis is laid on the artifacts from the sanctuary of Dodoni which are exhibited in a hall devoted to one of the greatest sanctuaries of the Greek world. The new permanent exhibition retains the Panepirotic dimension of the old one, as was conceived by the first director of the Archaeological Museum, Ioulia Vokotopoulou. It comprises approximately 3.000 artifacts from all over Epirus. The exhibition is structured around three different axes: chronological, geographical and thematic. These intertwined axes underpin the museum’s narrative in an attempt to highlight the area’s distinct character and history during antiquity. See more..

    - The impressive bridges of Zagorochoria

    Bridge of Plakidas image
Stone built bridges that have been standing here for centuries are still very impressive. Actually there are 3 impressive bridges rather close to each other. Approaching the village of Kipoi, the Kapetan Arkoudas bridge will be on the left side of the road, next Kokori's bridge will show up and then Plakida-Kalogeriko bridge will encountered on the right had side of the road. Each is different in structure and each worth the time to stop and watch and each worth the time to walk across. See more..
