Different Day Out- but great!

A great day out. We got there around 9.30am to beat the crowds and we had the river to ourselves. Water was freezing cold when you first go in but you soon got used to it. Jelly shoes are a must!! Walked up the river as far as we could- needed to swim in a couple of places, but the water was so fresh and clear, it was a wonderful experience. Highly recommend as a morning out. Had a coffee along the river at one of the many tavernas afterwards.

A great escape from the August heat
Starting from the Acheron Springs one can walk about 90 min up river and fight off the heat. it's an easy walk, although special shoes are recommended, and suitable for all ages. You should expect to get wet, but can carry a backpack for the day. Best time to go is early morning or after 4pm to avoid large crowds.

Enjoyable day out with excellent guide
Went on an organised coach trip from Parga which included a relaxing boat ride at Ammoudia looking for otters, kingfishers etc. We then moved onto a small town called Gliki for a substantial lunch in a lovely restaurant by the river Acheron. A 10 minute ride took us to the entrance to the gorge where we were able to walk upstream in the river. Although extremely cold at first, your feet soon got used to this and it was enjoyable experience. Unfortunately the toilets at the gorge entrance were disgusting and those on the cafe had not been checked for a while. The guide was excellent throughout and we learnt much about the area - history, mythology, geography etc. One advantage was that the coach picked us up from Valtos Beach and others along the main road from Parga. The cost was 50euros pp which bearing in mind the very good lunch we thought was reasonable value. We already had water shoes suitable for pebbly beaches and you could buy them at the gorge. We had bought a waterproof pouch in Parga for our camera.
