Kotsanas Museum of Ancient Greek Technology in the heart of Athens. Amphibious Diving Center image
We had an amazing time scuba diving with Theofilos. He continuously made sure that we felt safe, comfortable and were having a good time! It was so easy to get to his shop using the metro. He was boat captain, dive master, guide, driver and photographer! He did it all! The dive location was unique and very exciting, full of various sea life! We had a private diving experience, which was amazing! From the time we got there until we got back, he made sure that we had the best experience possible, catering to our individual diving levels. If it weren’t for the fact we were leaving Athens the next day, he could have convinced us to do our advanced certification with him . He took pictures throughout the dive and we got them the very same day! We are so glad that we had the opportunity to dive with Amphibious Diving Center. See more..

    - The epic Acropolis is a must!
Sunday: 8:00 AM - 8:00 PM Spent < 1 hour Historic Sites • Ancient Ruins
    Acropolis image
This ancient citadel, built in the fifth century B.C., towers over the city and is home to some of the most impressive ancient ruins, buildings, and artifacts. The most famous temple, the Parthenon, was dedicated to the goddess Athena and is considered the peak of Greek art. You can avoid long lines by joining a walking tour of the site. Make sure to wear comfortable shoes and bring sunscreen, as the walk up the hill can be steep and exposed to the sun. For the best experience, visit early in the morning or late in the afternoon to avoid the heat and for fewer crowds. – Tripadvisor See more..

  6. 4.5 Plaka (16.4k reviews)
    - A MUST SEE!
    Spent 2-3 hours Neighborhoods
    Plaka image
Wander through the narrow cobblestone alleys of this neighborhood at the foothills of the Acropolis. You'll find quaint shops selling jewelry, clothes, ceramics, and souvenirs, plus sidewalk restaurants and family-run taverns serving authentic Greek food. Being one of the oldest neighborhoods in Athens, you’ll be able to see Roman columns, medieval churches, and ancient landmarks like the Choragic Monument of Lysicrates. The area gets busy, especially during summer, so visit in the early morning or late afternoon for fewer crowds. Explore Plaka and the nearby landmarks on a guided tour of Athens—it will typically include the Acropolis, Parthenon, and other ancient temples and museums. – Tripadvisor See more..
  7. 4.5 National Archaeological Museum (7.936 reviews) from $9.64
    - An impressive collection of Hellenic masterpieces
Sunday: 8:00 AM - 8:00 PM Art Museums • History Museums
    National Archaeological Museum image
The National Archaeological Museum of Athens houses a lovely collection of Hellenic pieces starting from the Mycenean ear through to the end of Roman rule. Some of the highlights include the Agamemmnon mask, tables written in Linear B (pre-Greek alphabet) and a plethora of marble statues that have become quite iconic over time. The staff is polite and efficient, and they really allow for visitors to get rather close to the masterpieces (photography, as well as sketching with pencil or charcoal is allowed). Although this museum is not quite as robust as the National Archaelogical Museum of Naples, which houses both Roman and Greek works, it is more than worth the price of admission. One needs about 1 - 1.5 hours to get through all the rooms at a decent pace. Overall, it was a pleasant visit. See more..
  8. 4.5 Panathenaic Stadium (6.865 reviews)
    - Panathenaic Stadium Athens in April
    Sunday: 8:00 AM - 7:00 PM Arenas & Stadiums
    Panathenaic Stadium image
The Panathenaic Stadium dates back to the 4th century B.C. and was the site of the first modern Olympic games in 1896 and remains the starting point of the Olympic flame torch relay. Made entirely of white marble, it's an impressive sight that's earned it the nickname Kallimarmaro or "beautiful marble". There are even a couple of hours in the morning designated for morning jogs when you run in the footsteps of former Olympians. Take a stroll up to Ardittos Hill for a panoramic view of the stadium. Tickets are required to enter the stadium, which includes a free audio guide. – Tripadvisor See more..

  13. 4.5 Temple of Poseidon (2.451 reviews)
    - Cherry on the cake of a whole day Attica tour
Sunday: 9:00 AM - 8:00 PM Spent 1-2 hours Ancient Ruins
    Temple of Poseidon image
Temple of Poseidon is a remarkable site set on a southernmost tip of Attica peninsula. The Temple dates back to 5c BC and considering the age is pretty well preserved imo. It's a Doric style Temple strategically built on top of the cliff of Cape Sounion overlooking the sea, dedicated of course to Sea God Poseidon. I advise visiting this site as a whole day excursion from Athens, preferably with your own or rented car. The trip from the Greek capital is very picturesque with many places to stop along the way, and many nice beaches to cool yourself set in beautiful bays. At the site there's free parking and entry fee is 10 Euros. By the entrance is a cafe with inflated prices catering for bus tours coming to visit the site, so I recommend descending 5 min down with a car at a nice beach, where's also a taverna and a bar. As an added bonus you swim at that beach with great views of the Temple. See more..

  15. 4.5 Benaki Museum (1.555 reviews) from $12.85
    - Well worth a visit
Temporarily closed - Closed until further notice Spent 1-2 hours Art Museums
    Benaki Museum image
The Benaki Museum is among the most extensive and innovative cultural organizations in Europa. Diverse cultures from all historical periods and geographical areas meet contemporary art across a network of venues all over Athens – and beyond. The Benaki Museum of Greek Culture presents the history and art of the Greek world from prehistory to the 20th century, through 6.000 objects arranged over four floors. Antonis Benakis (1873-1954) was a passionate art collector. He belonged to a cosmopolitan circle of connoisseurs and intellectuals in Alexandria, Egypt. Following his return to Athens and the death of his benefactor father Emmanuel, Antonis bequeathed to Greece his collections and parental home, which opened in April 1931 as the Benaki Museum. After a comprehensive refurbishment, the building reopened on 7 June 2000 as the Benaki Museum of Greek Culture while the remaining diverse collections have since been housed in new buildings (see Benaki Museum of Islamic Art). - Beautiful
Sunday: 8:00 AM - 6:00 PM Spent More than 3 hours Bodies of Water
    Lake Vouliagmeni image
This brackish thermal lake in the Athenian Riviera is famous for its mineral waters and healing properties for the skin and muscles. Here, you can dip into waters that remain at a temperature of 71 to 84 degrees Fahrenheit year-round, and experience the Garra Rufa fish—a species commonly found at fish spas—nibbling off your dead skin. Located by the coast, the lake also has an underwater cave with 14 tunnels that have still yet to be fully explored. You can find sunbeds for tanning and a restaurant to enjoy your meal. Lake Vouliagmeni is less than an hour away from downtown Athens by driving. See more..
  18. 4.5 Anafiotika (1.285 reviews)
    - Cute neighborhood. Great for walking. Recommend having a tour guide to learn the history
    Spent 1-2 hours Neighborhoods
    Anafiotika image
Such a cute neighborhood. I almost hesitate to review this since it seems so "hidden". It's on the top list of tings to do in Athens so I think at this point it's somewhat well-known. However, many other tourists we met had not heard of this neighborhood so I don't know that it's extremely obvious. This is a cute neighborhood built by islanders that same to Athens to assist in building some of the city several hundred years ago. The residents there are all decedents of those people. There are no street signs and there are only about 60 "houses" (really, small white concrete "huts" that are all intertwined and connected to each other). Lots of stairs and twists and turns. Very quiet and peaceful. Walking to the top you can get great views of the city. Please be quiet in the neighborhood as this is a residential area and they live close to each other with thin doors. We recommend having a tour guide to learn more about the history. See more..
  19. 4.5 Tomb of the Unknown Soldier (1.281 reviews)
    - Well worth seeing.
    Points of Interest & Landmarks
Tomb of the Unknown Soldier image
The changing of the guard is a unique ceremony that is well worth seeing while in Athens. You can usually get fairly close for good photo opportunities. TIP: The guards come and go from the entrance on the north side of the building. If you stand on the sidewalk near the NW corner (at the intersection of Leoforos Vasilissis Sofias and Leoforos Vasilissis Amalias), you can watch them up close as they walk down the sidewalk to begin the ceremony. 21. 4.5 Museum of Cycladic Art (1.228 reviews) from $12.85
    - Focused and Worthwhile
Sunday: 11:00 AM - 5:00 PM Spent 1-2 hours Art Museums
    Museum of Cycladic Art image
A dynamic cultural institution in the centre of Athens, the Museum of Cycladic Art focuses on promoting the ancient cultures of the Aegean and Cyprus, with particular emphasis on Cycladic art of the third millennium BC. The Museum’s permanent collections include 3000 Cycladic, ancient Greek, and ancient Cypriot artefacts, witnesses to the cultures that flourished in the Aegean and the Eastern Mediterranean from the fourth millennium BC to approximately the sixth century AD. The Museum of Cycladic Art’s temporary exhibitions focus on archaeology and modern and contemporary art with the aim to familiarize the public with important twentieth and twenty-first century artists and to explore the relations between ancient cultures and modern art. Salvador Dali, Pablo Picasso, Thomas Struth, Louise Bourgeois, Sarah Lucas, Ugo Rondinone, Jannis Kounellis, Mario Merz, Ai Weiwei, and Cy Twombly are among the artists hosted. See more..
  22. 4.5 Theater of Dionysus (1.081 reviews)

    Ancient Ruins
    Theater of Dionysus image
There are two ancient theaters on the Acropolis southern slope - Herod Atticus Odeon and Dionysus theater. When you open TA to write a review of Dionysus theater, a wrong picture of Herod Atticus Odeon appears. On TA attraction listing for readers the pic is right. Same happens to many travelers who posted wrong pics or reviews here. The Herod Atticus is the first and much bigger and much better preserved theater you encounter after the main entrance downhill. Going further that way after Atticus you'll reach the Dionysus theater which is much smaller and its upper stands are under grass due to land erosion. See more..
  23. 4.5 Temple of Aphaia (1.023 reviews)

  24. 4.5 Byzantine and Christian Museum (996 reviews)
    - Brilliantly curated museum
Temporarily closed - Closed until further notice Spent 2-3 hours History Museums
    Byzantine and Christian Museum image
This museum tells the story of Christian art in Greece, starting from the transition from the classical period all the way to the modern day. It was enlightening to see how famous ancient Greek sights like the Acropolis would have been transformed with the advent of Christianity and the history of Byzantine art is also handled really well. At the moment, it's also quiet due to Covid, so inconvenience of wearing masks aside, I found it to be a tranquil and peaceful visit. There are also two great temporary exhibitions: one of Japanese artists commemorating what would have been the 2020 Olympics, and another of Chinese rare stone art which includes some exquisite carvings. I would recommend getting the €15 combination ticket which also included entry to the National Archaeological Museum. The cafe is also a lovely place to chill out in the gardens of the villa that the museum is house in. See more..

    Church of Kapnikaréa image
The small church is situated in the centre of a busy shopping street, the building is old as you can see in its construction. Small windows different stones ranging from blocks to what looks like Roman tiles. The inside is covered in beautiful murals and pictures, the small windows have kept the pigments in the colours. Unless they have been touched up. Quite cool inside on a hot day, does get busy as we found out, on our own one second next full to the brim. See more..

  29. 4.5 Areopagus (705 reviews)
    - Fantastic City Views
    Historic Sites • Geologic Formations
    Areopagus image
We stopped here before making our way up to the Acropolis, and spent 10-15 minutes admiring the views of the city and Parthenon. Comfortable shoes with decent grip are needed to stray from the paved area and walk along the rocks. For me it was very special and humbling to stand where St Paul once preached, and think of how much has changed in the world since that time. See more..
