An impressive collection of Hellenic masterpieces

The National Archaeological Museum of Athens houses a lovely collection of Hellenic pieces starting from the Mycenean ear through to the end of Roman rule. Some of the highlights include the Agamemmnon mask, tables written in Linear B (pre-Greek alphabet) and a plethora of marble statues that have become quite iconic over time. The staff is polite and efficient, and they really allow for visitors to get rather close to the masterpieces (photography, as well as sketching with pencil or charcoal is allowed). Although this museum is not quite as robust as the National Archaelogical Museum of Naples, which houses both Roman and Greek works, it is more than worth the price of admission. One needs about 1 - 1.5 hours to get through all the rooms at a decent pace. Overall, it was a pleasant visit.

    World Class Museum
I visited here at the end of August 2022. This is a world famous museum so again expectations were high and yet again they were exceeded. There is so much to see so where to start….. probably at the beginning I guess. The first rooms you enter showcases Mycenae art and findings from the ancient site. Actually one of the first things you see is the “Gold Mask of Agamemnon” and other findings from the graves at Mycenae that were uncovered. I hope to visit the Mycenae site next week so this gave some great background. Afterwards it was mainly the sculptures I enjoyed but I did also particularly enjoy the Egyptian section. There is so much to see that you can only take a very small amount of in on a first visit. So after 3 plus hours my concentration levels were starting to wain so I reluctantly decided to end the visit.

Enjoyable, lots to see and marvel at
The museum is called the archeological museum for a reason .It contains numerous rooms full of items discovered throughout the many archeological sites of Greece. Downstairs is currently mainly devoted to creative hand built grave stones and their decoration. Some truly magnificent examples alongside statues dating back to the times before Christ that are just impeccable. You have to marvel at their skill. It really blows my mind struggling to understand how the people of that time, over 2000 years ago, had these skills! Upstairs is currently devoted to the many pots and vessels that have been recovered from sites. If you are interested in history then it’s well worth a visit. We went early evening about 6 pm and it wasn’t busy at all.
