  1. 5.0 Meteora (5.502 reviews)
    - Meteora Magic
Sunday: 9:00 AM - 5:00 PM Points of Interest & Landmarks • Religious Sites
    Meteora image
Astonishingly beautiful, world famous and peaceful in equal measure. Christian Orthodoxy takes its monasteries seriously and Meteora showcases them like no other. Having travelled from Lake Ohrid in Norrh Macedonia, the early start and road trip wete absolutely worth the effort. I managed to get inside 4 of the 6 monasteries. One was closed on the dayI was there. Around 3 euros entry and a reasonable dress code for men and women must be observed. Whether inside or outside the monasteries, the profound nature and the views should humble you a little. A beautiful place in a world losing touch with the old ways. See more..
  2. 5.0 Great Meteoron Monastery (1.449 reviews)
    - A very impressive structure viewed from any angle
Sunday: 9:00 AM - 3:00 PM Spent 1-2 hours Religious Sites
    Great Meteoron Monastery image
A very impressive structure viewed from any angle, what an achievement with Middle Ages technology. A queue was starting to form when we arrived at 09.10, it opened precisely at 09.30, only one person at the ticket booth so less strict dress code applied than expected, and for those pulled aside, more time consuming. Very good inside, interesting archives in the small museum along with religious icons. The main attraction, the chapel was beautiful, every wall, ceiling, pillar, colourfully decorated with religious scenes, definitely a highlight. And viewed externally, just spellbindingly attractive. Mount Olympus image
Good way to spend your time in sporty way! Views are awesome! I advise you to take hiking staff like sticks with you - it really helps you to hike more safe and comfortable. You can leave your car in the parking zone (1000 meters high). The refuge A is on 2000meters high (it’s approximately 3 hours of hiking) from parking lot. See more..
  4. 5.0 Mount Pelion (257 reviews)
    - Pelion is unique and unforgettable experience.
    Mountains • Geologic Formations
    Mount Pelion image
We went to Pelion following advice from a Greek cafe owner in New York and were amazed to discover this wonderful and less known part of Greece. Driving from Athens takes about 3-4 hours and the toll road is fast. The peninsula is incredibly green, even in September we wondered in forests listening to waterfalls and creeks. Rugged mountains covered by trees descend to stunning beaches and small coves. Unlike places more popular with foreign tourists, Pelion is not crowded at all and we had a chance enjoy true Greek hospitality and fabulous food. Local wine is excellent too. We stayed in Hotel Eden in Agios Ioannis, Pilion. We came late, lost and without reservation and were received like family. Beach is wonderful, prices extremely reasonable. We recommend this hotel with great enthusiasm. See more..

    - Great location in the nature for photographs
    Spent < 1 hour Bridges
    Palaiokarya’s Stone Bridge image
This old stone bridge has the unique advantage of having two waterfalls, one before and one after the bridge. The location is easy to find, but it is much easier to have a car to drive there. It was not crowded when I got there, even though it was on a weekend. Nature around is beautiful. If you are into photography, the setting gives great opportunities for long exposures. See more..

    - Monastery in Meteora - day trip
    Religious Sites
    Mosteiros em Meteora image
Going to Meteora ? Few tips to make your trip more enjoyable We just a perfect two day stay in this amazing place. We took the train from Athens - Larissa station at 7:20 am and arrived around 11:30. From there it’s a quick taxi ride to your hotel or the monasteries. We decided to spend 2 night to really get a feeling of the place and not rush. Our Taxi driver Thimios was so nice that we decided to organize a private tour with him. It’s usually 20 Euros per hour and we totally recommend it. It gets hot in Meteora so it’s worth having someone who knows the place so you don’t waste time and energy walking blindly. If you want to contact him you can do it by phone or e-mail. He knows the perfect spots for pictures and will pick the best monasteries for you. See more..

  10. 5.0 Agion Taksiarchon Church (77 reviews)
    - Amazing church
    Sunday: 9:30 AM - 12:30 PM Churches & Cathedrals
    Agion Taksiarchon Church image
One of the very best churches I have ever seen. The drawings are excellent and the zodiac as well as the saint with the human body are not the usual art pieces you see in a church. Even if burned by the germans in the 2nd world war the masterpieces survived. Also the sound is really impressive due to the particular way it was built . A must visit See more..
  11. 5.0 The Holy Monastery of Panagia Pelekiti (73 reviews)
    - Impressive monastery, with a lot of tunnels and secret places
Spent < 1 hour Architectural Buildings • Religious Sites • Churches & Cathedrals
The Holy Monastery of Panagia Pelekiti image
It's worth the driving up there. The views you get once you arrive are fantastic. The monastery is small and ancient, but it has some passages below and an escape tunnel (if claustrophobia is not an issue). By all means, do NOT follow google maps directions. It takes you through a very rough, unpaved road and you can get stuck. Just follow the signs and you will get there with no trouble. See more..
  12. 5.0 Agia Marina Church (58 reviews)
    - Creepy but beautiful
Points of Interest & Landmarks • Religious Sites • Churches & Cathedrals
    Agia Marina Church image
This church is amazing. If you get to be the only one inside the church, it can be a bit creepy. You don't know where to look first, the decoration is amazing and unlike any other church I've seen. This is a real gem and I would recommend putting this church on the top of a must-see places in this area! See more..

  17. 4.5 Natural History Museum of Meteora & Mushroom Museum (512 reviews)
    - Fascinating mushroom displays
Sunday: 10:00 AM - 6:00 PM Spent 1-2 hours Speciality Museums • Natural History Museums
Natural History Museum of Meteora & Mushroom Museum image
Natural History Museum of Meteora and Mushroom Museum is located in the city of Kalambaka, very close to Meteora. Essentially, there are two museums housed in a building of 1100 m2 that host two permanent collections: The first one is about animals and contains approximately 350 species of mammals and birds, while the second one is about mushrooms and contains approximately 250 species of mushrooms. The collection of animals consists of high quality embalmed birds and mammals, made by Europe's best taxidermists, while some of them are very rare. The mushroom collection consists of handmade mushroom sculptures maintaining the similarity of colors, shapes and size. They are presented in three stages of development, so that the visitor forms a complete picture of mushroom's life circle. The sculptures were created one by one by high skilled sculptors of the wider local region. However, it is not just the quality of the exhibits that makes our Museum great, but also the way of presentation, which is very unique for greek standards and it can be compared with other similar european museums. Animals and mushrooms are presented into dioramas which depict exactly the natural terrain where they live and grow into(i.e. woods, wetlands etc.). The result of the dioramas is magnificent and ravishing to both young and older visitors, a fact that is reflected daily in the guestbook of the Museum, as well as on our Facebook page. Phrases such as "wonderful representation", "theatrical scenery", "huge work of art", "pioneering effort", "unique effort" etc., are just few of the comments of our visitors. This is one of the reasons that during these few months of our operation, our Museum has often been the main theme for reportages by the majority of Greek media and social media, a fact which presumably indicates the value and the quality of the project. Also, as part of the effort to expand the Museum's activity, there is our Artspace with a permanent exhibition of paintings and ... See more..

    - unique
    Points of Interest & Landmarks
    Matsopoulou Mill image
it works as museum which gives a very detailed image on what this building was for. but during christmas holidays you can combine it with a fairytale place with lots of attractions and small places where you can buy stuff to eat ( sweats / chocolate / pizza / juices / burgers / ice creams ) or other stuff for decoration. because of the place is too much crowded you may not visit all places or you may not enjoy it . its a unique experience especially for children. be patient because there is major problem with parking near the place. 24. 4.5 Trikala Fort (233 reviews)
    - Unexpected find
Points of Interest & Landmarks • Observation Decks & Towers
    Trikala Fort image
The official name of this site is the Byzantine Castle of Trikala. We found this by accident when we decided to go for a drive from Meteora in the middle of the day while we let the heat of the day to cool down. We drove to Trikala and then saw the walls and castle as we drove in. We didn't see any signs so just kept looking for the castle and it wasn't to difficult to locate it, it is on a hill. When we arrived we stopped and had a cold drink in the cafe at the entrance and then went on in. We were greeted by a lovely lady who provided us with a guide leaflet in both Greek and English and she gave us a little history and indicated what we should see. She was very helpful. The clock tower does have amazing views and it's not a difficult walk up. Definitely go here if you are in the area. See more..
  25. 4.5 Paralía Ágioi Saránta (227 reviews)
    - Really great beach
    Beaches
    Paralía Ágioi Saránta image
Beautiful spacious beach. Sand like white beads, that is why water is here pure and turquoise. Several cafes on the beach with sunbeds and parasols. Recommendation. It's a little difficult to access the beach because of the many curves and narrow road but nothing that a careful driver can not overcome. Signs along the way are story for itself. Among the pictures below you will find intersection where you have to solve the the riddle. :) See more..

  27. 4.5 Athanasakeion Archaeological Museum of Volos (170 reviews)
    - Not well known. A must see.
Temporarily closed - Closed until further notice History Museums
Athanasakeion Archaeological Museum of Volos image
The Archeological museum of Volos is not well known. Perhaps this is because Volos is usually the gateway to Skiathos and Skopelos or Meteora. This is a pity, because this museum has a rare collection of Neolithic era artifacts from in and around Volos as well as from the whole of Thessaly, which seems to be full of Neolithic settlements (they have a map showing them all). It was weird to see dates like 6500 BC! There were exhibits dating from 6500 BC to the Roman ages (3rd century AD). At least this is what I recall. The majority was from the Neolithic Era. It was thrilling to see objects thousands of years old and the evolution in the making of jewelry, tools, statuettes and everyday objects. There are also a lot of tombstones (plus a few tombs). It is not a big museum, so it is not a long visit. If you have some time to spend in Volos, go there. I don’t think you will regret it. See more..
