Takis is an amazing teacher, treats his horses with great respect and his visitors as friends that he wish to share with them the miracle of life in the nature. ''The expression of ALPHA ESTATE'S ecosystem throughout human's expertise and experience is the heart of our wine making philosophy'' This statement, coming from winemaker Angelos Iatridis and vine-grower Makis Mavridis pretty much sums the concept and the driving force behind the joint effort of two pioneers of wine growing and winemaking in Greece that selected the remote Amyndeon plateau, an area of PDO wines in North West Greece to establish and develop a state of the art vineyard driven winery. In the coolest wine region of Greece, at an altitude between 630 and 700 meters above sea level the two partners decided to invest in what is today one of the biggest investments in the Greek wine production over the last ten years. The area were today stands the 85ha privately owned block-vineyard was selected in the early 90's by Bordeaux educated and internationally trained enologist Angelos Iatridis, as the optimum wine growing and consequently winemaking region in Greece. A beautiful walk along the shore of the lake. Starting from the busy commercial street with shops and cafes, roughly after one kilometer you will leave the town and walk around the peninsula. The distance is a little more than 7 kilometers, however the terrain is flat and you will not get tired. Halfway through you can visit the cave (closed on Mondays) and an eleventh century byzantine church. After an hour and a half walking, enjoy a coffee or a meal and the Nautical Club, the first building you will find at the end of the route. If you are not too tired you can mount the stairs at roughly Km 6 and enjoy the view from Prof Elias church (I didn't...maybe next time). After the Nautical Club you can see beautiful old houses along the coast street in the famous Apozari area. See more..

  25. 4.5 Byzantine Museum of Kastoria (46 reviews)
    - Great experience
Sunday: 8:30 AM - 3:30 PM Spent 1-2 hours Speciality Museums
    Byzantine Museum of Kastoria image
The Byzantine Museum of Kastoria, which occupies premises built in 1985, was inaugurated in 1989 and remained open until June 2013. During that period it housed an ‘interim’ exhibition in one of its three galleries. The new exhibition material focuses mainly on panel icons and sanctuary doors, of which there are seventy-five (75); there are also five (5) fragments of frescoes, and thirty (30) other items, examples of the minor arts. The inclusion of this material was reviewed and proposed in a report based on the following principles, consonant with contemporary museological and museographic practice: • Connection with the social and economic context of the period that permitted the painting of the icons and the system of values they serve. • Emphasis on the uninterrupted consequence of the city of Kastoria, which, its peripheral position notwithstanding, flourished in both the Byzantine and the post-Byzantine eras (9th-19th century). • Creation of a museum devoted exclusively to Byzantine and post -Byzantine icons, documenting both the unique character of the icons of Kastoria and the multiple aspects of their function in the Byzantine world, which are among the most important sets of icons in the world. • Organisation of the exhibits in direct association with the churches from which they came, as a spur for the creation of an archaeological walking route in Kastoria, a city that is considered as a prime example of a living, open-air museum. • Creation of a modern, scientifically serious but at the same time visitor -friendly museum. - amazing
Spent 2-3 hours Historic Walking Areas • Castles • Religious Sites • Churches & Cathedrals
    Kastorian Byzantine Churches. image
it is one of the many byzantine orthodox churches of Kastoria. It is in the center of the city not far from the byzantine museum. The church is not big, but is very nice decorated with good preserved medieval icons. It is the only (i think so) church in the town with this type of cupole (dome). It is not open everyday, only some days in the year and it doesn't work as a regular church wit everyday service. If you want to visit it you have to find the responsible, who has the keys and to ask to open it. We didn't know this, but he saw us in the street and open the church and was very helpfull. 28. 4.5 Chionodromiko Kentro Vasilitsa (29 reviews)
    - Great snow!!
Spent More than 3 hours Ski & Snowboard Areas
    Chionodromiko Kentro Vasilitsa image
Very good medium (for Greece) size ski center, with a lot of middle dificulty ski-runs, all of them through giant pine trees. Trere is 2-3 difficult (black) slopes and a few easy. Usally snow condition is the best of all ski centers in Greece and the ski period is long (remember we are not in Alps, but in Greece). There are some cafes and restaurants in the base of the ski center. The view of the top of ski center is magnificent. You can see all the high mountains of Greece from Smolikas to west, to Voras (Kaimaktsalan to north and at the east is Olympus, the mountai of the Gods! The personel of ski center are polite and helpful, much more than other ski centers in Greece. In summer times Vasilitsa ski centrer is used for mountain bike. See more..
