Nicopolis Museum, Epirus, Greece
4.5 (235 reviews) Monday: 8:00 AM - 8:00 PM Spent 1-2 hours Ranking #1 in Epirus Speciality Museums
Ancient Greece.
Nicopolis is an ancient city that was built on 31 B.C by Octavios after the batle of Aktio. If you translate it from Greek to English Nicopolis, means the city of victory. It is placed just outside the town of Preveza. It is great for someone that is interested in ancient history to visit that place. Also the museum that they recently built near the ancient city of Nicopolis is one of the most moderate and intresting musuems in Greece.

Very informative museum site a little disappointing
The museum is a must and you need to go there before the archaeology site. The entry is €8 and covers museum and site. The history described is not only focused on the local area but provides context for what was going on over the last 3000 years across the whole of Europe and beyond. The artefacts on display are just remarkable - how glass lamps and earrings have survived over 2000 years is out of this world. The sites were a little disappointing as the information boards are hard to read. I think they’ve used 8 font (!!). One board was so far away from the fence it was completely impossible to read any of the text. That being said, the restored mosaic floors are very impressive. The smaller of the two amphitheaters has been sympathetically restored. The larger one is still under restoration you can see it from the road but can’t go in. We were advised it will open at the end of 2022. Well worth a visit. We cycled from Preveza it’s about 12 miles round trip.

The museum is worthwhile and straightforward compared to the site.
We visited here on our trip from Lefkada to Arta stopping first at the tall 5th C Christian Walls. Discovering they went about a km in each direction, we drove to one end and walked to its center main gate and followed the sign to the 1st C Odeon. Driving another direction, we found the 575 Basilica A ruins(3rd C bath ruins across the road) and finally drove to the Stadium ruins and the 5,000 seat 1st C Theater which is under reconstruction. While the museum is worthwhile and straightforward, the 1 mile square site as a whole is unwalkable due to being divided by a very busy and dangerous highway.
