Great visit - with zero people
We scheduled our visit during lockdown, with a local guide Vasilis (from Saxonis Houses) who helped us a lot with arranging our full day trekking. The weather was great, views breathtaking and of course a very long walk! It took us approx. 5h getting to the lake and 4h returing to mikro papigo village. If you want to avoid a full day trek you can stay at Astaka refuge. We preferred returning to our privacy in Saxonis Houses (conveniently located in Papigo Village). Spring is the best time of the year to visit the lake.

A lovely hiking up to Drakolimni
This is a hike for people in good shape. Up from Mikro Papigo it takes around 3 hours to Astraka Mountain Lodge where they sell drinks and food. Furter 1-1.5 h down and up to Drakolimni. Beautiful View On the way. Lot of horces grazing in the valley, a peaceful scenery. We went there in September with perfect temperatur for shorts, t-thirt snd a wind jacket/fleece plus hiking shoes! My advice, bring enough food so you have enough energie. One of my friends stopped at Astraka, had nothing more to give. Way back it is downhill, hard for knees If you have this kind of problem. We loved the trip, amazing! Full day from 9-18.

is definitely worth a visit
Trek from Micro Papigo takes about 4 hours depending on your condition. There are 4 shelters along the way, where you can sit and refresh your own supplies, and for three of them the water is flowing to add / during my visit in September 2018 in one of them water did not flow/. After about three hours, you will come to the Astraka Mountain Lodge, where you can also stay overnight. As you continue to the lake, you must first descend a little to the valley to get up again on the other side. And even if you feel like you can not, it's worth it. The lake is at 2100 m. and its surroundings are some great views. During the journey to the lake, you will often encounter a flock of sheep or grazing horses.
