A garden of grand variations
This is one of the most wonderful botanical gardens I've seen in China, much less the world, and I've seen a number of extraordinary gardens. You do need to be aware that it is about an hour outside of town and you may not be able to get a DiDi to it. Other ride sharing apps, tour buses, and a very inexpensive public bus can get you there. I suggest you pay for the electric carts if you can because there are 23.5 km of trails. Barring that, make sure you explore all the Chinese Academy of Science's gardens. Flowers, fruits, and vines are amazing. Then do as much of the rain forest as you can. It is a different world.

I walked ~37,000 steps in a day!
After about 1 hour drive from the city and you are transported to a beautiful garden. The west side of the garden is more polished while the east is more natural. I visited both sides on foot (yes, I did not pay for the buggy) and covered about 25km in about 4-5hours. Did not pay for a guide as I prefer to have a hike at my own pace. Would recommend visiting the east side if you have a full day in the garden (at least 5 hours) and is physically capable to hike for long distances. The foot path in the entire garden both east and west consist mainly of flat grounds (which makes the hike easy). I went in Dec and the weather was perfect. Would imagine it to be very very very hot in summer.

Lovely, but busy
You could spend a day. They kind of a central square that has water fights for younger kids to cool off in the heat. When you take the trails, look at the sign posts and walk the one that has the longest route. It will also be the quietest! We had a guide who helped wiht green codes, tickets and directions and it made life so much easier.
