Potatso National Park, Yunnan, China

Chinese National Park

Not for you if you want to really hike and explore off the beaten path. We are also spoiled by US National Parks but Potatso is made for a nice change from the many temples and old town we saw on our Yunnan trip. You are taken to the inside of the part by bus, then we went on a walk by the lake, later took a boat across another lake and walked some more. But they give you more of a general overview. Landscape is nice and I saw and photographed some interesting birds. Most guided tours same as ours have this in their itinerary and it took us half a day to do it.

Very beautiful scenery with easy access from Shangri-la city
This is a beautiful place, worth a visit for the scenery and, on our visit, tranquility - and quite unspoiled compared to many "scenic areas". The downside is the necessary 10-15 minute diesel bus ride to Shudu Lake with no English commentary or short brochure. On the way back we were taken to Beitahai Lake, another beautiful spot but the visit of one hour was too rushed. There is a KFC copy cafe near the drop off point, if you are hungry, otherwise very limited fare by Shudu Lake. Remember that Potatso is 3800m above sea-level, so take it easy and bring some oxygen, if you are not yet acclimatised.

Good Natural Park with easy hike; not too many walking path options though
Nice walking area around the lake and river. At this time of the year probably the best thing is that it wasn´t very crowded, although it is rainy season though...difficult to have it all! National Park Buses take you conveniently to different spots in case you don´t want to walk that much, especially if travelling with children. We did not feel the altitude that much even though most Chinese had an oxygen bottle with them. Not too far from Shangri-La City, which makes it also easier to access (roads under construction at the moment)
