5.0Custer State Park(6.139 reviews) - Beautiful state park with lots of wildlife Spent < 1 hour State Parks
One of South Dakota’s most iconic landmarks, this park stands out for its granite peaks, rolling grasslands, and clear mountain waters. Stretching over 71,000 acres, Custer is home to abundant wildlife like bison, prairie dogs, bighorn sheep, and more. Drive down Wildlife Loop Road to spot the begging burros (they approach vehicles for food), hike the Little Devils Tower Trail for a bird’s eye view of the area, and go swimming or boating in one of its five lakes. With warm days and cool nights, summer is an ideal time to visit Custer. Don't miss out on exploring the rest of the Black Hills, including Mount Rushmore. – TripadvisorSee more..
5.0Roughlock Falls State Nature Area(126 reviews) - Beautiful area Spent 2-3 hours State Parks • Nature & Wildlife Areas • Forests • Valleys
Hiked along the path of the beautiful falls. Met lots of locals. Always friendly, saying welcome to the Black Hills! (Loves that!). Nice place to spend a little, or a lot of time!See more..
You can either drive on a dirt road or park on a paved road and hike a mile to the falls. Hubby and I hiked it. Easy hike and falls were amazing. Path was a bit muddy due to melting snow. There was a lot of damaged trees in this area from a tornado a while back. Also, you can either hike from here to Spearfish Falls 1.5 miles, or just drive back down the road a bit and park.See more..
We stayed 3 nights at the Lake Vermillion Campground and loved it. What a pretty area and beautiful lake. There are campsites lakeside and also a loop. The sites are large and roomy. We loved all the "Christmas" tree type pines throughout the park. Very peaceful and quiet. You will find a few boats on the lake on weekends but no one infringes on your site. The campground had lots of rabbits so keep your dogs on a leash. We also encountered finding some ticks on our dog but we kept an eye out for them so wasn't a problem. We did some hiking trails within the park and saw the dam there also. Great place for fishing. We thoroughly enjoyed our lakefront real estate for our 3 days in the park.See more..
Many shady camping spots. Several nice overlooks. Some of the best and cleanest restrooms I have seen at a campground. See more..
4.5Fort Sisseton State Park(16 reviews) - Very nice park, nice tours, good stop for history buffs State Parks • Parks
Stopped here to eat lunch, nice park and campground, you can tour the fort which has a ton of history and is mostly outdoors. They have reenactments during certain hours, and you can walk into most of the buildings or parts of them. We only stopped for an hour but could have spent more time here. It is NOT by any services though, so if you need gas or food, get it before.See more..
This area provides a great variety of hiking terrain. There are open prairie, light forest, hilly inclines, and gradual slopes. The scenic overlooks with informational signage are great and there's always a map posted along the way to help you get around. Great place to spend a few hours. The visitor center hasn't been open due to the pandemic but the restrooms are open.See more..

4.5Oakwood Lakes State Park(5 reviews) - camping and enjoying the outdoors at Oakwood State Parks • Parks We have spent time at Oakwood camping as well as day activities like picnicking and hiking. This is my favorite state park because of its set up and also natural beauty. There are two camping areas - upper and lower. The lower has more trees because it is older but the new area is just as nice but definitely more sunny. Facilities include showers, toilets, mirror, etc and are kept very clean. The whole park is nice and clean. There is a swimming area as well as an area set up for soccer golf and picnicking. See more..
5.0Sandy Shore Recreation Area(5 reviews) - Sweet beach State Parks • Bodies of Water I have visited this park since I was so little my Mom had to carry me. Love it. We have camped here many times. Always a fun time. See more..
4.5Union Grove State Park(4 reviews) - Best of the Midwest. Spent 2-3 hours State Parks We spent six nights at the campground and we couldn't have made a better decision. The campground is relatively small but the cleanest campground that we have ever been to. There is only electricity at your sight but the bathrooms are independent of one another with each having a toilet, sink and shower in them. They are each unisex. I have never seen rooms this clean. There are sites to camp with your horse and go on trail rides, too. We took a walking path and loved the beauty of walking at the tree's edge and listening to the beautiful voices of the birds and taking pictures of all the wild flowers that were in full bloom. The managers of the park are very gracious and willing to accommodate to your needs. We are so glad we chose this campground. See more..
This is a nice camping area with RV hook ups. Good fishing for good size cat fish and bass. Sits below oahe lake and dam. See more..
2.5Roy Lake State Park Number 2(2 reviews) - Needs signage to find the East park (#2) State Parks Nice campground but they need to put up road signs on 10 and 25 so you can find #2 or the East campground when coming from the East instead of being directed to the west one where there is still not signage for the east one. Nice level sites, well done shower house but the shower lever is hard to figure out, keep trying. We only overnight-ed so can't comment on much else. Staff was friendly when I had a question on the reservation. Would overnight here again.See more..
5.0Hartford Beach State Park(1 review) - Very well kept campground on Big Stone Lake State Parks • Beaches
It was Memorial Day weekend. I usually go camping somewhere but could not get away this year. I'd given up on camping but decided to call a local campground to see if, by chance, they had a cancelled reservation. I was in luck! They had an overflow spot generally reserved for large RV's and I could have it. Hartford Beach is really close to where live and I'd never been there before. WOW was I surprised. This place is taken care of very well, superbly, in fact. The rest rooms were clean, showers were clean and everything was trimmed up nicely for the weekend. They even had archery lessons free of charge for those that wanted them. The facilities were cleaned at least once a day maybe twice. They were clean. There was a very nice playground for the kids. There is a swimming beach. Also there are cabins to rent for those that are not into roughing it too much. Of course there is stellar Walleye fishing on Big Stone Lake. All in all a very pleasant enjoyable weekend!See more..
4.0Lake Hiddenwood State Park(1 review) - Small campground in an out of the way location State Parks This is one of our favorite state parks to camp in. It is small, secluded and quiet with lots of hiking trails. I like the solitude. The kids love taking the hike up to split rock, which is literally a large boulder in the middle of a field that is lying in 2 pieces. There is also a nice stone picnic shelter. There are 12 or 13 campsites, 6 with electric. All sites are first come first serve. This can be tricky when trying to plan a family trip, so we usually go here in the spring or fall when you'll definitely be able to get a site. Water is available, but no dump station. No showers or flush toilets. Only vault toilets. There is a beach, but not well maintained and usually overgrown with weeds. There is newer playground equipment for kids to play on.See more..
